*** UPDATED x1 *** Giannoulias wants to allow extra vanity pics for driver’s licenses

Posted in:

*Alexi Giannoulias fundraising pitch…

Dear Friends,

Let’s face it. It’s hard to find anyone who loves their driver’s license photo.

But what if you could do a retake?

Earlier today, our campaign announced a plan that would allow Illinoisans to choose the photo placed on their driver’s license.

Under our proposal, the Secretary of State’s office would allow Illinoisans to take up to three additional photos when they renew their license or state identification card at one of the Secretary of State’s facilities.

The Secretary of State’s office would charge $10 for each additional photo taken. The additional cost would only apply to those who want to have their photo retaken.

Revenue generated from the extra photos would go towards a new driver safety fund to support education, safety and training programs.

Will you help us keep our policy driven campaign going by contributing $25, $50 or $100?

There are many important policy issues involving the Secretary of State’s office that we have discussed and initiatives we’ve proposed. This isn’t one of them.

But we want to give Illinoisans a choice and have the opportunity for a more flattering photo while generating new revenue to make our roads safer.

Sincerely,

Alexi

The change wouldn’t take effect until the current long lines finally dwindle.

Your thoughts on this?

  18. For example, as the State Librarian he could do more to promote literacy in our underserved communities.

Also the SOS regulates the securities industry in Illinois, which has done a good job of protecting middle class families from financial fraudsters and financial services companies that take advantage of hard working people. Alexi does not have a good track record in this regard, however:

  27. =Ageism much? =

Jesse White is 87 years old. Octogenarian defined= a person 80-89 years old. Stating a fact is not ageism.

It took a pandemic for several services to be offered online. Clearly these changes could have happened years ago but there was a complete lack of innovation from the SOS.

the only time anyone should ever have to enter an SOS facility is if they are taking a driving or vision test. all services should be 100% online.

also Apple is piloting digital DL’s in 8 states. surprise surprise Illinois is not one of them. Why? because we clearly aren’t capable of moving into modern society. in the next 5 years digital DL’s will exist in most states, ILlinois will not be one of them.

also let’s not forget the debacle with the real ID. I can’t help but feel like a more involved executive would have done a better job with the federal mandate of the real ID

    Good idea.

We have vanity license plates that raise funds, both for GRF, designated charities and other purposes I think. This seems like an extension of that.

    Again, a good idea.

    Comment by Scott Fawell's Cellmate Tuesday, Sep 7, 21 @ 11:15 am

  34. === Why not let them if it raises money? ===

Because this will create longer wait times for everyone else. Many people go to the SOS during their lunch periods or days off, and I do not imagine that those folks want to wait in a longer line because someone isn’t happy with their DL photo.

  36. Some of the ways this can so sideways.

    – People think ‘bad’ photos are just a scam in order to get another 10 or 20 out of people.

    – Hey my second photo stinks, I want another one for free.

    – Hey my second photo stinks, you did that to get another $10 out of me.

    – Dear XYZ office of the SOS, you are way below the state average for “selling” extra photos. What are you doing to improve that?

    – The SOS is disappointed in overall revenues for extra photos, what are you doing to improve those revenues.

The last thing based on the history of the SoS over the years in Illinois we need is for anything to ‘get cute’.

It’s a dumb idea, too much potential downside vs upside.

Comment by Senator Clay Davis Tuesday, Sep 7, 21 @ 11:51 am

  48. MaddyMoon- you were being an ageist not because you mentioned his age, but because you inferred that his age had something to do with the evolution of customer service in his office. If Secretary White ran again, he would win in another landslide because of the way he handles his office. Furthermore, REALID could be said to have been troublesome for the entire country, not just Illinois. There were numerous federal extensions that indicate that to be the case. Since you are questioning the Secretary’s involvement on these issues, I would hope that you have some evidence of what he is/isn’t involved in, otherwise it is just a statement you throw out there to try to gain ground on an argument you can’t win based on facts. The pandemic, I believe, highlighted the available services the office had online because of necessity, but many services have been available online for awhile. Any improvements I would surmise are due to the administration’s concern for efficient customer service. But feel free to write off actual facts to try to support your initial misguided post.

  49. I also think it’s telling that Alexi’s orientation is towards extracting money from people.

The policy proposal could have been, we’ll take 3 shots to increase the likelihood of getting a good one, and you choose the one you want.

Instead, this scion of the Broadway Bank family is focused on finding another way to pick people’s pockets, instead of serving them well.

This is also why it cracks me up so much to see SEIU hail Alexi as, “…the undisputed choice for Illinois’ working families.”

  53. It’s not the worst idea in the world If it’s digital pics, it literally costs very close to nothing to take multiples and let the customer decide for a fee. And it would only add a lot of time if you get a vain person that ponders for a while. SInce that could be done on a well, you stand and ponder and I’ll get back to serving other customers basis, I see little downside.

It’s not the most pressing issue, but it’s not a dumb idea.

Apparently Alexi does. Seems to me that this is a solution looking for a problem. If this were on a list of issues that I might have with the SOS office I would rank it at the bottom. Our goal in thinking about this office should center around it running as safely and efficiently as possible. And there’s always room for improvement in both of those areas. Asking me to wait in a line that stretches out the door and offering more pictures as a value added service seems a bit tone deaf.

  62. Alexi makes it so hard to support him. It’s a dumb idea, and then they’ve framed it in an even dumber way (vanity pictures). The amount of money it would raise is minimal, the amount of making him look like someone with no vision is maximum. How about joining the 8 or so other states that will allow you to store your DL in your phone. That’s something useful at least.
