Question of the day

Posted in:

* I posted part of this US Rep. Rodney Davis quote this earlier today, but let’s take a closer look

Davis said he is waiting to see what the map looks like before deciding his next political step [including a possible run for governor].

“Hold on to your seats, we’ll see what kind of political gerrymandering they put forward, and then we’ll all make decisions based upon that battlefield,” he said.

* The Question: What do you think of Davis’ response? Make sure to explain.

  1. First thought is I’m not sure what gerrymandering has to do with state wide office.

  2. Per my response in the previous post-

Rodney is talking a mean game, in the locker room.

Bailey, Schimpf, and Rabine at least have taken the field, son.

  3. I think it’s truthful.

  4. As the esteemed Homer would say, Duh!

Comment by Sir Reel Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 11:07 am

  5. Davis is clearly “office shopping”

Davis knows he can’t beat Mary Miller, and depending on what a map could look like with Davis and LaHood… I think Davis’ response is a man in search of where he can find the path of least resistance, not a man looking to lead a state or be any type of force in Congress other than be a loyal cult follower in a district he can win.

It’s not about serving the state or a district, it is about serving his own best interests… and if Griffin can guarantee at least $100 million to Davis, or face imminent defeat by Mary Miller…

I think Davis tells, at least me… “I’m in it for me”… whichever race it makes sense not to easily lose first.

  6. It kind of feels like an Onion story, “Rep Rodney Davis ponders which race he would lose by smallest margin.”

I say knowing full well the amount of times he has overcome the odds.

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 11:09 am

  7. Honest. Keeping his powder dry. Trying to stay on the high ground as the battle approaches.

The main problem is his troops are outnumbered.

Comment by Keyrock Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 11:09 am

  8. === Bailey, Schimpf, and Rabine at least have taken the field===

Until petitions are in… you can be “in” but are you in the race “all in”

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 11:09 am

  9. It’s not that Davis wants to be governor, or hold any other statewide office, he just doesn’t want to lose to Mary Miller.

Comment by Pundent Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 11:23 am

  10. “but are you in the race “all in”

X number of GOP primary voters have already decided to vote for one of the three.
    Davis ain’t changing their minds.

If a fourth raises their hand before Davis?

    Comment by Flying Elvis'-Utah Chapter Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 11:32 am

  11. Davis will run for governor.

    Comment by M Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 11:33 am

  12. === Davis ain’t changing their minds.

If a fourth raises their hand before Davis?===

    Davis requires… requires… a crowded primary and $100 million, $50 million upfront.

That’s specifically why I stated as I did.

Who is to say any of those three don’t meet the petition requirements? It’s that important.

===he just doesn’t want to lose to Mary Miller.===

It’d be like “I swore allegiance to the cult and *still* lose” kinda bad

Could put Davis with LaHood to keep him busy here and not in his caucus political role, at least for the primary.

It’s plain ole office shopping… singularly focused on himself.

  14. In the context of the current Republican party, his use of the word “battlefield” makes me a little queasy.

Comment by Earnest Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 11:52 am

  15. With hedges like that, he should start a landscape design business.

He’s not a label person because, frankly, somebody may think he’s too Trumpy and somebody else might think he’s too insurrectiony. He’s just himself.

    Comment by 47th Ward Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 11:57 am

  16. “Hi, I’m Rodney (can’t decide what public teet I’m going to try to stay on) Davis.

Got a good beat, and you can dance to it.

    Comment by Flying Elvis'-Utah Chapter Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 12:10 pm

  17. Congressman Davis could obviously defeat freshman Miller. To suggest otherwise is silly tavern talk. Davis is a team player and properly has no interest in an outcome where resources against a common enemy are squandered. Should he run for any Statewide office he will be a serious contender.

Comment by Al Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 12:13 pm

  18. === Congressman Davis could obviously defeat freshman Miller.===

If it were at all obvious Davis would declare and run.

It’s obvious that Davis knows the eastern bloc, 51st state folks like Miller, likely over Davis in a primary… why ya think Davis is hedging on being seen “not so Trumpy”… that won’t beat Miller down there. Nope.

=== Should he run for any Statewide office he will be a serious contender.===

A serious contender is one with $100 million against a man who will likely spend $250 million… a quarter of a billion dollars.

Your thoughts are tavern-style muscles, not to be confused with tavern cut pizza… and your projection about Davis’ real problems is fun.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 12:17 pm

  19. =Congressman Davis could obviously defeat freshman Miller. To suggest otherwise is silly tavern talk.=

    Speaking of silly tavern talk…

If Brave Sir Rodney thought there was a slam dunk somewhere, he would have told us already. There isn’t, he is looking and trying to save face hoping maybe some of the nuts running for governor will be intimidated out of the race. The thing about the kooks is that they believe they can do it and won’t be intimidated by Brave Sir Rodney.

His best chance may be to take out LaHood.

Comment by JS Mill Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 12:33 pm

  20. Hilarious that Davis’ phony “moderate” schtick might be what sinks him when a challenge from the right appears.

Comment by Jibba Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 12:37 pm

  21. Since Davis has no idea how those maps will be drawn and I doubt seriously he will be invited to participate in mapping, it looks like an honest, realistic answer. Keeping all of his options open.

    Comment by Louis G Atsaves Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 1:54 pm

  22. ===Keeping all of his options open.===

    Narrator: he’s office shopping

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 1:55 pm

  23. This makes no sense. He doesn’t want to run a race that Democrats gerrymander to be more competitive but thinks he can win statewide office in a blue leaning state? This race is too hard now so I’m going to give up. That’s a good quality you want in your next governor.

Comment by Blueman Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 2:01 pm

  24. My God ! What does it say about the Republican Party that anyone with a brain would vote for Mary Miiler over Davis. Rodney, what’s up with your party? Mary Miller ! Seriously.

    Comment by Stormsw7706 Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 2:30 pm

  25. There are seven Statewide offices open next year. There are nearly 13 million citizens. There are high level talks and recruitment activities going on all over the State. If will be interesting to see who all throws their hat in the ring.

I do not see Congressman Davis declaring before Thanksgiving being a sign of fear. It is the sign of an astute predator running with a pack of wolves and team JB is scared. Despite all his spending JB is still going to have to work and spend for his re-election. JB is vulnerable which is why he is on TV a year and a half before the election. There is a strong active anti-JB faction. I see more Dump Pritzker signs now than I did pro-Rauner signs a couple years ago for example.

Comment by Al Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 2:40 pm

  26. === and team JB is scared===

    Scared of what?

Had a successful EFT Fundraiser of $35 million, polling above water, signed budgets and legislative accomplishments… and above water on Covid.

Maybe you’ve had one too many lemon shakeups at the fair?

=== JB is vulnerable which is why he is on TV a year and a half before the election.===

    No.

Like Rauner, like JB… when you have the resources to own and build a narrative that the other side can’t match… you engrain that message, burn it in.

It’s why having advantages… is advantageous.

===I see more Dump Pritzker signs now than I did pro-Rauner signs a couple years ago for example.===

Signs don’t vote, land doesn’t vote… where exactly is your tabulation on your anecdotal “facts”?

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 2:46 pm

  27. Sounds like a stirring call to public action by a committed public servant wanting to help Illinoisans the best way he can. Or a self-serving career politician/staffer who only cares about himself and his next office. I’m going the the later.

Comment by 47th and Lake Park Wednesday, Aug 18, 21 @ 3:40 pm

  28. ===JB is vulnerable===

More wishful thinking. If the minority could will it into existence, it would exist.
