COVID-19 roundup

Posted in:

* Ohio’s lottery idea apparently didn’t quite live up to all the hype

In Ohio, Republican Gov. Mike DeWine created a lottery offering $1 million prizes for vaccinated adults and full-ride college scholarships for children. Ohio’s lottery kicked off a wave of similar incentive lotteries nationally.

DeWine’s May 12 announcement of the state’s Vax-a-Million program had the desired effect, leading to a 43% boost in state vaccination numbers over the previous week. But the impact was short-lived, with vaccinations falling again the following week.

On May 12, 42.29 percent of the state’s population had received at least one dose. As of today, it’s 46.75 percent. 41.5 percent of Ohio’s population is fully vaxed, compared to 44.6 percent of Illinois’ population. Illinois is considering a lottery program as well.

Approximately 60% of White or Asian Chicagoans have received at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, outpacing Black and Latino Chicagoans who are significantly more likely to contract the virus and suffer severe illness or die, according to city data through Tuesday.

Approximately 36% of Black Chicagoans have gotten the first shot, while approximately 43% of Latino Chicagoans have gotten at least one dose, according to the city’s data.

  1. Maybe we and Ohio should try Washington State’s “jabs for joints” program

  2. I’m curious to see if Pritzker issues any more disaster proclamations after this one ends. Wouldn’t he need more if he’s going to require the state follow CDC masking guidelines during Phase 5?

  3. I understand that some people face barriers to getting vaccinated, but that so many outright refuse is puzzling, disappointing, and disturbing.

  4. a lottery system in which 5 people from every county gets drawn to pie-in-the face their least favorite politician?

  5. Perhaps fire should be fought with fire.

How would you try to convince a conspiracy theorist of something. Present it in a conspiracy theory, of course.

Start spreading a conspiracy theory that the vaccine is really a secret vaccine, which will protect against the coming plague unleashed by the UN to depopulate the planet as part of “Agenda InsertRandomNumberHere”. This vaccine had to be offered to everyone in order to prevent anyone from becoming suspicious when a news story inevitably leaked that the rich and powerful were paying for and exclusively receiving this vaccine. The real money had to be spent to figure out how to create it, while the manufacturing costs to them for millions of doses after the large expense of research and development would be pennies in comparison.

Of course it’s a terrible idea, mostly since I just strung it together in about 90 seconds.

But there is also kernel of truth in it.

-How can you convince someone to do what you want them to do?

-By making them think it was their idea.

Better yet, a lottery where the winner(s) gets to name one politician from Illinois that MUST resign from office.

  9. I know this isn’t the point, but the Chicago statistics likely don’t cover everyone that had to go outside of the City to get vaccinated. I got my shots in Michigan (closest place offering doses), so I’d never be in the Chicago count while I do live here.
Optimistic side of the street that the vaccinated numbers are higher.

  10. I like the conspiracy theory that the vaccine is really for a future plague. Of course you need to get the appropriate web sites and talking heads to publicize it. Got any connections there? Because I’d really like certain people I know to get vaccinated. The virus is still around by the way. Had a couple never going to get vaccinated friends get the virus last month. They were miserably ill for weeks and are still exhausted.
