5 Eastern Bloc members vote against ethics bill

Posted in:

* They weren’t the only ones to complain that the ethics bill doesn’t do enough. Most probably believe that. They were, however, the only ones to vote “No.” So, I suppose they get points for consistency, but it might not be so easy to explain back home why they voted against some of the bill’s individual provisions…

Among other things, they voted against a statewide ban on fundraisers during session and the day before and the day after scheduled session dates.

* The funniest part, though, is that right after the ethics bill vote, Rep. Jonathan Carroll (D-Northbrook) rose on the floor to publicly thank the lobbyist who had bought pizzas for the chamber. Yes, you read that right.

Timing is everything, I suppose.

  1. “We want reform, but first we want our own state”

    The Eastern Bloc

They truly are utterly ignorant to “taking a win” and then running against their own “green” votes.

Honestly, putting all the blockheads in one district, maybe the Dems were factoring in they each would bring a 1/4 of common sense to an argument.

They are indeed a sad lot.

    Agreed

Anyone can be against ethics “not going far enough” or any other typical thingy that makes one “ethically superior”, but the reality is… decidedly being the ones who make the perfect the enemy of the good in ethics… that doesn’t help change anything.

That said, it makes total sense why the five red votes came from the Eastern Bloc

    That truly was uncanny.

  11. ===the lobbyist who had bought pizzas for the chamber===

A couple of years ago I would have suggested that pizzas aren’t enough to really sway the vote of a legislator because it’s pizza. Since we found out about Exelon’s criminal enterprise and since it apparently just involved a handful of jobs and nothing I would really consider a bit ticket item worth the amount that Illinois rate payers got screwed I have been forced to re-evaluate.

The song was supposed to go champagne tastes, beer bottle pocket — but for our legislators it might just be pizza party tastes, billion dollar pocket.

  12. They all voted against the business reforms in the 2019 budget deal and the forming of the ethics commission in 2020. Why vote yes when it feels so good to say no?

Just curious, where did the pizzas come from? Hopefully the lobbyist humbled himself to the likes of Caseys, Dominos, maybe Pizza Hut on West Monroe west of Fairhills Mall, or other local cheaper pizza options within close Capitol proximity.
