When the State Legislative Redistricting map was released late Thursday, one thing was unfortunately and immediately clear, the highly concentrated Arab- American and Muslim community in Southwest Suburban Cook County was divided into 4 districts, creating a map that does not even remotely represent one of the largest Arab-American and Muslim communities in the nation.
Retired Judge William Haddad, who Chairs the MENA Independent Government Advisory Council Says,“Our elected officials say they have a keen awareness for diversity, inclusion, and equal representation but what we see with this map is status quo gerrymandering. The Arab-American and Muslim Community in Southwest Suburban Cook County deserve a district but have once again been left behind.”
They make a good point.

The Muslim community did an excellent job of documenting where they live all around the state; developed a map, and presented the map and testimony during several redistricting hearings.

if you live SW, the community and the large size of it is very familiar. it is wrong to ignore these folks. don’t expect your visit to a mosque to ask for votes to go so well the next time.

This would be a great discussion for Republicans to push back, using VRA type thinking against Dems.
The thing is, the bigger and broader the discussion instead of picking a narrowing “fail” is what will make the bigger press splash.
Who knows, maybe republicans can see those seats as places with fertile ways to be/stay relevant.

Not quite sure what maps you’re talking about, Precinct Captain. I’m talking about the maps the Muslim community created. If you are suggesting that the UCCRO Unity Map is unconstitutional, I think that’s something you would need to take up with civil rights attorneys and others who are well versed with demography and state and federal constitutional law.

I’m a Democrat embarrassed by the map and ridiculously disrespectful way it was rammed with 72 minutes time. Hearings were held but lawmakers ignored the testimony gathered.
