* I don’t expect a huge number of comments today, so blogging will be condensed and light, but I hope to keep it timely. Anyway, I really thought Leader Hoffman was going to launch into another Willie story yesterday, but no such luck…

.@JayHoffmanIL's "where's your map?" line of questioning to Republicans during this redistricting debate right now is reminiscent of "where's your budget plan?" when he said he asked his dog Willie if he ate it in 2014. https://t.co/B8mMVUClLk

  2. Have to admit, I was ready for another Willie story myself. Heading out for retriever training session with my own “Willie”. Thinking a field full of happy retrievers will be the easiest group I deal with all day!

  3. Still need your office address for the 17th street care package.

  4. Willie was a good dog!

  5. He should have asked if the dog at the map, too. At least it would have added some humor to a comment that makes absolutely no sense. A Republican map would have zero percent chance of going anywhere or even being looked at by the Democrats, and everyone there knows it. Just more political hot air to keep the tension between the two parties escalated. Real productive.

  6. I lost a couple runner bean starts to the wind and cold, otherwise everything looks okay if you don’t count the pepper plants’ sulking. What a glorious day today, even if a bit cool.

  7. Pool opening party delayed a week. Only polar bear club members would attend today

Comment by DEE Saturday, May 29, 21 @ 9:38 am

  8. Yesterday’s rain delayed my trip to the cemetery until today. The sun is shining but still windy and temp feels colder than 52. My annuals are still in their pots waiting til it warms up a little.

  9. Making a pot of Pozole Verde. Taking the easy way out - canned hominy.

  10. Rep Hoffman, we really don’t get a true view of your map until Willie passes it. (Similar to you passing this one on the floor-looks the same)

  12. - Occasional Quipper - Saturday, May 29, 21 @ 8:37 am:

Who cares if a GOP map would have went anywhere? If the Republicans had an ounce of political skill or ability, they would have drawn and publicly released a map that maximized minority representation regardless of incumbency and put Democrats on the spot to match the numbers. That’s just one option. But the Republicans don’t actually want a map out there that maximizes diverse representation or has a lot of competitiveness, they want a (white) Republican map. It’s why their top House remapper said his only definition of a fair map was one that put Republicans in charge.

  13. Funniest item in the files with the Comptroller is the $$$ GOPies spent on a pricey lock on their map room

Comment by Annonin' Saturday, May 29, 21 @ 11:01 am

  14. ==A Republican map would have zero percent chance of going anywhere or even being looked at by the Democrats, and everyone there knows it.==

Probably true, but, as with the budget, it would make a much better talking point for the Republicans than a long stream of complaints that the process is not fair. Show us what your policy actually looks like…What does a Republican “fair” map look like? How does that compare to what the Dems are offering? They could have had a non-partisan group develop a map, collect comments, edit, and then finalize it. The press would have eaten it up and supporters of an open process would have been able to point at the alternative and criticize the Dems. The problems, of course, are that the Republicans would not like the resulting map and that the Dems could incorporate some of the features and claim some level of responsiveness.

  15. PC and others hit it on the head. Republicans should have taken that opportunity to show the various minority groups how their proposal would have been better. As it stands, their criticisms rang hallow.

  16. ===a much better talking point for the Republicans than a long stream of complaints that the process is not fair===

Huh? Do you actually think this statehouse press corps would write every day, sometimes multiple times a day, about some wonky map alternative when they have snappy process quotes handed to them on a silver platter?

Look at the coverage, man. The House Republicans are dominating it by feeding these reporters exactly what they want: Easy-peasy stories that take little to no time to write with the veneer of conflict to justify newsworthiness.

  17. ==Look at the coverage, man.==

My bad. I read CapFax and listen to NPR.

I would like to see an alternative (map or budget), but I don’t think the Republicans will ever produce one.

I keep posting requests for Republican alternatives because I know reporters read this blog and I would like to see them start asking for an actual policy alternative.
