Today’s most pro-Exelon spin

* Q98.5, Rockford’s #1 New Country station

As reported in September of 2020, Illinois lawmakers are considering permanently closing two nuclear energy facilities in the state, one of which is a short drive from Rockford.

Um, Exelon is the one threatening to close three nuclear power plants if it doesn’t get hundreds of millions of dollars in ratepayer subsidies, despite an independent audit showing it doesn’t need nearly that much.

  5. The Thomson federal prison camp isn’t that long a drive from Rockford. Some Exelon assets could soon end up decommissioned there.

    Well, he certainly nailed it on the last bit.

  9. Clean Energy - that’s very nice, but the point here is that the company is asking for subsidies to continue operating.

  11. A power plant that is closed has no value. If anything, it costs them lots of money to mothball a plant. I say we call their bluff, let them start the closing process, then sweep in using eminent domain to take over the operations at a bargain. Maybe they should even pay the state for taking this distressed assets off their hands. Surely we can do the job for far less than the hundreds of millions in subsidies.

    What amount is Exelon seeking? I wonder what it would cost to replace that same energy level with a new solar farm? Nuclear Energy is some of the cleanest energy we can produce.

  15. Americas largest solar farm, Solar Star outside LA, is 1.7 million individual solar panels on 3200 acres. It’s maximum output is 600 MW or roughly 1/4 of a dual unit nuke.
