It’s just a beer

Posted in:

* A bill that included the “shot and a beer” promotion passed the House today 108-6 with 1 voting “Present”

Provides that, from June 10, 2021 through July 10, 2021, a retail licensee may offer a single drink of alcoholic liquor at no cost to a customer as part of a publicly advertised promotion to encourage participation in any COVID-19 vaccination program if the customer provides proof of COVID-19 vaccination received at any time.

“No” votes were Republican Reps. Caulkins, Chesney, Halbrook, Miller (no relation), Severin and Windhorst. In other words, much of the Eastern Bloc.

  1. The Eastern Bloc - Refusing to support a private business wanting to donate their product in order to help the common good. Talk about profiles in courage.

  2. Welp… it ain’t now Whiskey Rebellion…

    The Eastern Bloc can celebrate that single district so many will be sharing … you’d think that might be cause fir an adult beverage for them.

  4. What about people that don’t consume alcohol for moral, ethical, and personal reasons? Like me? Can we get something free too if we show our vaccination proof, such as free groceries, tank of gas, etc.?

  5. The ironic thing is that my brain cannot untie the phrases “Eastern Bloc” and “Soviet Bloc”. This is probably very frustrating to legislators who view anything they don’t like as socialism. 🤷‍♂️

  6. ===What about people that don’t consume alcohol for moral, ethical, and personal reasons?===

    Everyone has their own priorities.

    If a private business wants to give something away for free to you for getting the vax, good for them.

  8. “Can we get something free too if we show our vaccination proof, such as free groceries, tank of gas, etc.?”

    Absolutely. But there doesn’t need to be a law for it. Alcohol is pretty tightly regulated, so for the promo to be legal, it needs to be a law.

    Comment by Ducky LaMoore Thursday, May 27, 21 @ 12:23 pm

  9. -Can we get something free too if we show our vaccination proof-

    Sure, depending on what these private businesses want to do. The only reason a bill was needed here is because alcohol is involved.

  10. The new Happy Hour. Happy to associated with the vaccinated over a drink.

  11. As expected, the Illinois Church Action on Alcohol and Addiction Problems is against the “beer for vaccines” bill.

  13. I suggest bars offer a glass bottle of Cheerwine for the teetotaler set (just discovered at Jewel a couple of months ago - it’s like Dr. Pepper but good [don’t @me])

    Comment by lake county democrat Thursday, May 27, 21 @ 12:39 pm

  14. Haven’t there been numerous articles written that overconsumption immediately after vaccination will reduce the efficacy of the vaccine? A free shot and beer often leads to more shot and beers….

    Comment by Lake Effect Thursday, May 27, 21 @ 12:41 pm

  15. ===Haven’t there been numerous articles written===

    Articles written and actual proof are two very different things. Maybe find another news source.

  16. =What about people that don’t consume alcohol for moral, ethical, and personal reasons? Like me? Can we get something free too if we show our vaccination proof, such as free groceries, tank of gas, etc.?=

    Please. A drink at a bar does not equal groceries or a tank of gas. Go to a bar, show them your vax card, ask for a free Shirley Temple or an O’Douls, and stop complaining.

    Comment by Steve Rogers Thursday, May 27, 21 @ 12:47 pm

  17. I think it’s a fine idea. A little surprised that it takes a state law for a bar owner to give someone a free drink.

  18. Some may be holding out for the “Shot for Pot” promotion.

    Comment by Johnnie F. Thursday, May 27, 21 @ 12:53 pm

  19. “A free shot and beer often leads to more shot and beers…”

    This might move the needle on vaccinations — but I don’t believe for a second that it will move the needle on alcohol consumption.

    @Commisar Gritty, I’m kind of embarrassed to admit this, but for the longest time, I didn’t know Xenia was a real place; I thought identifying Darren Bailey from there was dragging him for xenophobia…

  22. Perhaps the no’s are pandering to the anti-vaxxer portion of their base? Sad. I know a number of friends and family that are most definitely take a the free beer!

    Comment by CMZ Thursday, May 27, 21 @ 1:16 pm

  23. === I didn’t know Xenia was a real place===

    The real irony is that the name is derived from transliterated Greek for “guest friendship” and the obligations one has to guests, but especially foreigners.
