After 10 years in Congress, Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.) announced Friday that she will not run for reelection in 2022.
“Today, I’m announcing I will not seek reelection after completing this term,” Bustos said in a video statement first obtained by HuffPost. “It will be a new decade, and I feel it’s time for a new voice.”
It’s not clear what Bustos plans to do next.
In an interview on Friday, Bustos told HuffPost that nothing in particular was driving her decision to go. She said she tends to make big changes every 10 years ― she worked as a reporter and then an editor for about two decades, and then in health care for 10 years ― and felt it was time for another shift.
We see this a lot right before remap elections. Making matters more difficult for Bustos was that she barely won her last reelection campaign and the remap is gonna be tough for her.

Botched her chance at leadership last cycle and took her congressional district for granted. Factor in having to work a new and more conservative district. Transition to the private sector. Be very interesting to see who comes out for this open seat.

Congressional pension is a pension made available to members of the United States Congress. As of 2019, members who participated in the congressional pension system are vested after five years of service. A full pension is available to members 62 years of age with 5 years of service; 50 years or older with 20 years of service; or 25 years of service at any age. A reduced pension is available depending upon which of several different age/service options is chosen. If Members leave Congress before reaching retirement age, they may leave their contributions behind and receive a deferred pension later.[1] The current pension program, effective January 1987, is under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), which covers members and other federal employees whose federal employment began in 1984 or later. This replaces the older Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) for most members of congress and federal employees.

* make Kinzinger’s district “blue”, trade a fading Bustos district and make it lean “red”
* help Kinzinger by heading WAY more west but then try to offset that red given to Kinzinger by heading deeper and more pointed to “blue” areas south.
Swapping districts is an easier fix(?)
It’ll be interesting, can’t see Dems saying… “meh, we have 13 now, making 12 districts isn’t all that bad”

Rep. Bustos will be greatly missed. She represented the rural, small town, farmer, working class Democrats, not the urban Progressives. We need more like her, not less. I wish she was staying, but…I now look forward to seeing what her next decade brings.

That would likely include Chambana and BloNo–much of those areas were in Kinzinger’s 11th during his first term. Maybe the south side of Peoria too (the area in the current 17th) too.

This is the right way to let everyone know there is going to be an open seat — giving people plenty of time to organize a primary campaign is ideal.

Because the trend is not their friend. The Democratic map will probably make 3 burning red districts, 3 swing districts, and 11 blue districts. This makes their job a lot easier.

Before I moved into her district I never thought much of Bustos. Then I saw how she worked her district. She was impressive. I was also impressed with her legislative efforts.
Compare her to Derwood LaHood, yikes. He is as empty as a living human can possibly be.

If the Dems think they can’t keep 17, then the Dem parts can be used to shore up others. Rockford goes to 14, Peoria adds to 13 and they both become presumed Dem wins. 17 and 18 merge, and all the R districts get large swaths of rural area to balance out the population.

Best of luck, Cheri.
But really glad the mapmakers don’t have to worry about trying to save her seat anymore. The trends are not Dems friends when it comes to keeping a Northwestern Illinois district in the Dem column.
Would love an I-74 Central Illinois seat that scoops up Champaign-Urbana, Bloomington-Normal, and Peoria.

Does Underwood’s district now move west, include Boone and Winnebago counites, including all of the city of Rockford to make Underwood more solid, plus force competitors to compete in at least two media markets?

All this talk of “districts” getting eliminated completely misses the mark of what really happens during redistricting. The entire state is a blank slate to meet the legal requirements and then political goals of those drawing. Past district lines are irrelevant.

Just want to add that the Rock Island county dsm chairman this week announced he won’t run for another term as the head of the county party. I’m not saying he’s running for the seat but that something is going on with local politics and the party around here

Huh? Have I missed something? Because from where I sit, the ILGOP has utterly lost the collar counties over the last 30 years.
Has a bunch of farmland turned redder? Sure. But farmland doesn’t vote.

I would hate to be running as a moderate Dem in a swing district next midterm defending the largest expansion of the Federal government in US history with 4 trillion is extra spending that will not be paid for by just the millionaires and billionaires

I’ve heard this too, but I think Morthlander edged him out and made him scared to run.
I bet he would seriously consider it this time if he can get the donors lined up.

While Biden is polling above 50%, the policies and the rhetoric is polling well in the 60% area.
This is Illinois, not Alabama.

It’s not that Dems can’t lose. They certainly can. It’s that Republicans in Illinois don’t know how to win particularly in the collar counties but certainly statewide. Blame lousy candidates for that.
