Don Corydon volunteers six mornings a week, six months a year at the Crete Lions Club Recycling Center, rising before dawn most days to operate the loading dock doors and help out as needed on the sorting floor.
During the warmer half of the year you can find him on the golf course instead, except on Saturdays and rainy days when he’s back on duty at the recycling center.
Corydon’s fellow Lions Club members can forgive him for slacking off a little during the summer. After all, he’s 90.
This is National Volunteer Week, when we’re supposed to honor the people who step up to donate their time and effort to making our communities better.

Beyond commenting here to the delight of the masses, I also volunteer at a community radio station and during non covid times as an usher in my church. In years past I volunteered as a dog walker at the local humane shelter, and have also volunteered at the local Chamber of Commerce.

2-3 hours, 4-5 days a week st a nonprofit artsy/crafts resale store.

Been part of our local Lions Club since 2005.
Usher at our church for close to 30 years.
Had helped at a First Tee location 2 years ago, and hope to this summer if enough kids sign up. The First Tee instructs kids on golf, but all stresses core values such as honesty, persistence, patience, etc.

I work with cats at the local shelter. They suspended the volunteer program during the pandemic, but I’ll return when allowed.

Currently volunteering with Boy Scouts and First Robotics. Retired volunteer with the National Ski Patrol. A few other stints with community groups along the way.

My entire family volunteers at the local Humane Society. We also participate in various church-sponsored events.

I was in the same Architecture Center docent training class as Geoffrey Baer. I had to quit giving tours a few years ago because of knee surgery, but have worked all the Open House Chicagos and plan to resume giving tours once things open up and they start training again.

Boy Scouts is my primary volunteer gig, but I have been known to donate blood, help with community litter cleanups, and as a financial coach.

I did magic for paitents at a children’s hospital in Oak Lawn before COVID, waiting for them to let us back in. The magic is going to be rusty, but it will good to be back.

Kiwanis member/officer/events chair; Church usher, etc. & deliver “Backpack meals” to the schools 1x monthly; help out at civic events. All a lot of fun.

Northern IL Foodbank…there is no reason why anyone, especially children should go hungry in America…

Yes but not nearly as much as I should be. I try to volunteer both independently and as part of an organization/ association. However COVID has all but eliminated these efforts and that’s unfortunate. This past year would have likely been the most impactful.

Do we count all the time spent making Capt’ Fax into an international hero?
If not count the board at a community center, organizing an antique car show and a tourism booster group

Oh, so this guy can golf every weekend but when a president does it, everyone gets all up in arms?

Quasi. Pre-COVID, was a volunteer through Boys & Girls Club in local public schools. If can’t do that post-COVID, will find something else - some excellent ideas here.

Yes - and prior to COVID it was time to get my 12 year old involved with me. But that never got started so when more outside volunteers and younger ones are allowed back - he (whos’ 13 now) shall be coming along with me once or twice a month.

The most eye opening thing I get to be involved with is a small drug coalition. Our overdose response team has been an eye opener to say the least. The good Lord has blessed us. But there is good out there in America, just when we want to say our country is on the the end run, I know better. It’s not the greatness of our country, but the greatness of its people.

Another Lion. Christmas tree sales mostly, raise $25K for charity each year. Club has other income sources, donates over $50K annually.

Have volunteer since 1993 coaching with your Junior PRO Football program as a coach teaching 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Also volunteer couch for high school team since 2010 (sometime miss practice because of work. Plan on doing both at least another 17 year as my grandkids come thru program, youngest one is 1 1/2 now. That is if I hold out until age 78 lol

I volunteer with the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust, giving tours and (pre-pandemic, anyway) helping to train and mentor new volunteers. I also help with the annual housewalk, Wright Plus.
And I serve on the boards of two local arts organizations (a Latinx theater company and an early music group).

Not currently, except for some church things.
In the past I have volunteered with the Boy Scouts and Toys for Tots.
I was once an unpaid Park Board member when the small town where I lived at the time wanted to get a park going, which a group of us did, and the park is still there (and expanded) 40 years later.

Forgot serving on the board of the Chatham Railroad Museum for many years. Just stepped down this past year to let a younger person take the position. I’ll probably do a bit more there this year if / when we get back to normal.
And 20+ years as Secretary for a national car club / 501c organization. About time to let a younger person do that also.
