*** UPDATED x1 *** Burke’s FBI tapes are not gonna be pretty

Posted in:

* I told subscribers some time ago that multiple sources say Ald. Ed Burke has a very bad habit of using racist language in private conversations and that, among a whole lot of other things, could be a real problem for him as his case moves forward…

Ald. Ed Burke on FBI tape, discussing problems with the Old Main Post Office project: “[W]ell, you know as well as I do, Jews are Jews and they’ll deal with Jews to the exclusion of everybody else unless…unless there’s a reason for them to use a Christian.”

Prosecutors call the recordings of Ed Burke's calls "powerful evidence of Burke's involvement in unlawful activity." They say he's trying to keep them from a jury. pic.twitter.com/h6aqAM2IwT

*** UPDATE *** Press release…

The following is a statement from Illinois State Senators Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) and Laura Fine (D-Glenview)–the only two Jewish members of the State Senate–in response to Ald. Ed Burke’s antisemetic comments revealed today:

“When he thought no one was listening Ed Burke revealed his true self. Simply said, Alderman Burke’s remarks smack of blatant anti-semitism and are both ignorant and repugnant.

“For starters, he owes an apology to the Jewish community.”

  5. This is a gold mine and I can’t wait to read the entire filing later. I imagine the Alderman is hearing some loud chuckles on the floor of city council right about now…

A fun little nugget from the filing: ““the cash register has not rung yet.”

  6. Color me not shocked about the alderman’s private attitudes.

  7. Small Talk

The former powerful chairman but current alderman Ed Burke had a lot to say, he just didn’t realize how many would hear his words.

    To wit;

Burke discusses things like cash registers and race, even throwing in anti-Semitic for good measure.

Upshot - This could make others look at this case in a more up close way

Downshot - Burke’s own image can take an even bigger hit, something some though was impossible

Backshot - What Burke has said behind so many others’ back will be an eye opener for people going forward.

Buckshot - This whole case is about squeezing people and making an easy buck

Sneedless to say, the ageless and priceless Chief Justice Anne Burke can’t be over the moon about these new revelations.

  8. I guess the idea of having a statue honoring the longest serving alderperson will be tabled. /S

Comment by DuPage Saint Wednesday, Apr 21, 21 @ 1:19 pm

  9. If Burke had retired a few years ago none of this would have happened. Some of these guys they just can’t let go. Madigan seems headed for a similar fate. Was George Dunne the last guy to retire in time?

  10. In any place besides Illinois/Chicago, they would both have resigned their public positions a long time ago.

So, no “innocent until proven guilty”

If you haven’t noticed, resigning in disgrace isn’t in vogue.

    See, NY, VA, FL…

This is like Kass complaining about Chicago then selling his house to move *to* Chicago.

  16. ===Burke won re-election===

This sets up a pretty big false choice.

Would you rather be represented by someone under federal indictment, or someone that believes certain kinds of people don’t have rights?

Comment by Pundent Wednesday, Apr 21, 21 @ 1:57 pm

  19. When people tell me that I’m paranoid and anti-semitism doesn’t really exist anymore (surprisingly frequently from “progressives” who believe in intersectionality for everybody except Jews), I try to explain to them that anti Jew attitudes are pretty well baked in to way too many people. Thanks to Ed for proving my point.

  22. George Dunne was forced out as Cook County Board President after 31 years to inappropriate, consensual dalliances with work colleagues at age 77.

That was before Viagra was even invented

  23. To repeat from a previous post: Perhaps the Two Eddies—Burke and Vrdolyak— will soon share Suite #29 at the Greybar Hotel. Bet Harold Washington is smiling.

  24. I have always wondered why Anne B did not subtly and prudently remove herself from the public sphere as things got dicier and dicier for her family. Her high profile job raised many questions and apparently in the end did not serve to protect Ed.

  30. I had the pleasure of being in one private meeting with Burke. This tracks.

Comment by Montrose Wednesday, Apr 21, 21 @ 4:39 pm

  31. @lurker : “And became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court’s spouse.
    Just saying.”

Article VI Section 3 of the Illinois Constitution states: “Supreme Court Judges shall select a Chief Justice from their number to serve for a term of three years.”
They pick their chief, it has nothing to do with politics, there are only 7 of them. They traditionally have a rotation.

Comment by Unionman Wednesday, Apr 21, 21 @ 4:41 pm

  32. And why, Unionman, do you think Anne Burke became a Supreme Court Justice? Could it perhaps have more to do with her husband being chair of the Cook County Democratic judicial selection committee than any other factor?

  36. “I’m sure he cleaned it up for the Mrs.”

It is naive to think that Burke toned it down for Judge Burke in the privacy of their home.
