The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today reported 2,587 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 9 additional deaths.
- Champaign County: 1 male 50s
- Cook County: 1 female 40s, 1 male 50s, 1 male 60s, 1 male 80s
- Madison County: 1 male 60s
- St. Clair County: 1 male 80s
- Tazewell County: 1 female 70s
- Will County: 1 female 60sCurrently, IDPH is reporting a total of 1,306,787 cases, including 21,694 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 62,406 specimens for a total of 21,839,226. As of last night, 2,288 individuals in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 522 patients were in the ICU and 223 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.
The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from April 13-19, 2021 is 3.8%. The preliminary seven-day statewide test positivity from April 13-19, 2021 is 4.5%.
The total number of COVID-19 vaccine doses for Illinois is 10,162,155. A total of 8,201,830 vaccines have been administered in Illinois as of last midnight. The seven-day rolling average of vaccines administered daily is 122,531 doses. Yesterday, 81,963 doses were reported administered in Illinois. However, data from Walgreens on the number of doses administered yesterday is not included due to a technical issue and will be added in tomorrow’s total.

ICU admissions have not been this high since January 29th. Deaths are a lagging indicator.

I give up. There’s no rhyme or readon to this virus. ICU filling up and everyone’s talking opening up. Fans at bulls and hawks, navy pier, elk grove concerts,etc. Then you hear another surge coming with the new more potent and deadlier india strain…… Job has his work cut out rhats for sure.

IDPH should start publishing separate figures for the top 51 counties in vaccination rate and the bottom 51.

@RWC - Sangamon County has been ahead of the curve with over all vaccinations and recently has been averaging about 50 cases a day.. High but not what it was in November and December.
I have curiosity/hope that this latest surge will end with something close to a flip of the switch as the herd comes on quick because of past infections and current vaccinations. But with established pockets of anti-vax folks that won’t be the case in some areas of the state.

Will feel bad about this for another 40 days. At that point anyone who wants a vaccine could have gotten both doses and waited the 14 days post-second dose.
After that, this needs to end and we need to get on with our lives and the risk of death that everything in life carries with it. This being the status quo is not sustainable.

Amen. If people choose not to get vaccinated, it is not the job of any government to prevent them from living with the consequences of their decisions.

Unfortunately, the rest of us will also bear the consequences. Those folks are allowing themselves to be evolutionary petri dishes for the virus by providing safe harbors where the virus can evolve to the point where we will all need a round of booster shots. They will also be infecting those who cannot get a vaccine due to age or underlying medical conditions, and they will be taking up hospital beds that might be needed for other folks.

@Pot - The strong takeaway is the vaccine still provides a very strong response to all the variants.
Also - rightfully so we are only talking about Illinois or the US here - if you really want to worry think about the billions of people elsewhere who have no access to a vaccine right now and won’t for another year or two. THATS the petri dish to be worried about. The US is 3% of the worlds population.

No. The main purpose of shut down was to flatten curve and not overwhelm hospitals. If your have 30-40% not vaccinated that’s approx 100-130 million ” candidates”. The infection rates vary but currently you have about 10% of population who have been infected. 10% of 100-130 million is another 10-13 million cases.

Well said Pot and Masker, this virus will continue mutating into something we don’t recognize, just because that is what viruses do. Everyone needs to step up and be responsible adults and get vaccinated. That is our biggest chance of beating this. If a country is not vaccinated no travel to or from allowed. Through all of this the anti group is focused on “me” and then they they spend time whining about the children they raised not being more considerate of others.

It’s hard to see progress when Will county is consistently showing up on this list of deaths, no matter how short the list is. This statistically should not be happening.
Maybe it’s time to start addressing why Will county still has the same health department leadership which was giving the green light to have pizza buffets during the large spike last winter.
Larry Walsh might not be a household name outside of Will County, but I’m almost certain this type of incompetence would not be allowed to continue in any county department if he was still sitting in the leadership chair(county executive). Unfortunately he is no longer with us.
