The U.S. Department of Labor estimates 16,944 new unemployment claims were filed during the week of April 5 in Illinois, according to the DOL’s weekly claims report released Thursday. […]
There were 16,182 new unemployment claims were filed during the week of March 29 in Illinois.
There were 14,189 new unemployment claims were filed during the week of March 22 in Illinois.
There were 15,595 new unemployment claims were filed in Illinois during the week of March 15.
There were 71,175 new unemployment claims filed in Illinois during the week of March 8.
* One year ago…
Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) reported 141,160 new unemployment claims were filed during the week of April 6 in Illinois.
And that was down 60,000 from the previous week.
* The rest of the country is starting to catch up…
The number of Americans filing first-time jobless claims last week fell to the lowest level since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Labor Department.
Data released Thursday showed 576,000 Americans filed for first-time unemployment benefits in the week ended April 10, down from an upwardly revised 769,000 the week prior. Analysts surveyed by Refinitiv were expecting 700,000 filings.

Add to it the # of people leaving the state, 1200 per day, 8400 per week, 33,600 per month and so on. Makes the numbers look good when everyone is leaving Illinois in search of jobs.

Can someone explain something to me? Why do these stories always talk about new applications? What about all the people who have already been on unemployment and haven’t found a job still? Or, alternatively, if everyone on unemployment is only on it for a few weeks and then gets a new job, isn’t that also an important number?
Why is the focus only on new applications all the time?

At my company we have quite a few open positions and more so all the time. As for the people leaving the state I always find the numbers strange. I checked the census and I don’t ever find those numbers.

To the post,
If you’re mouth breathing both “people are leaving” and “Illinois needs to open up” while not wearing a mask, I can’t take that too seriously.
I do know places I saw closed before are “open”, with employees too. Anecdotal, but seems to align with numbers in unemployment. While public transportation is still significantly down, we are almost to pre-pandemic traffic times to and from Chicago.
That can’t be an accident too.

IDES still behind the curve , Illinois’ American Rescue fumble as 100’s of thousands have yet to receive their extended benefits! Most in black and brown communities have not received benifts since February. Check it out Rich. Pretty sad.
