The husband of Kankakee City Clerk candidate Destini Sutherland-Hall was arrested Tuesday on charges that he brought a gun inside the Kankakee Public Library at that evening’s clerk debate.
Just as Tuesday’s candidate forum between the two Kankakee City Clerk candidates had begun, a Kankakee police officer entered the room.
The officer approached Raymond J. Hall, 50, the husband of Republican Party candidate Sutherland-Hall and after only a few moments, the two walked out of the fourth-floor room where the debate was taking place.
It was later learned that Raymond Hall was carrying a handgun. Illinois law prohibits a gun from being brought into a public library even if the owner has a concealed carry permit.

On Monday morning, the three-member Kankakee Electoral Board unanimously voted that Republican Party city clerk candidate Destini Sutherland-Hall should not have a place on the ballot for the election which concludes April 6.
Sutherland-Hall is opposing Democratic Party candidate Stacy Gall for the position which will be open as 20-year city clerk Anjanita Dumas did not seek re-election.
She’s appealing the decision.

The races are boring and predictable. Most are uncontested. I will be an election judge. It will be a slow day. A very expensive election to produce so many foregone conclusions. There are definitely too many units of government in Illinois. The only campaign material we’ve received is for a school board election.

Part of the CCL process (if he has one) is learning where you can and cannot carry. That is the responsibility of the CCL holder. I just cannot make sense of the man’s actions.
I agree with the comments on uncontested elections. The partisan elections here are all uncontested and all GOP candidates. Just not good for the state.
For those who want to see consolidation, don’t just talk about it, do something.

Based on the mail I am getting and the polling being done either the Aurora mayor’s race is polling closer than I figured and/or the mayor is getting no chances.
Got phone banked (not sure if it was a volunteer or not) for the race and when the guy seemed surprised I answered he kind of fumbled along, when I asked him what the name of the mall is in Aurora he couldn’t tell me.
Also interesting that my Alderman just happens to be having a community shredding event just before the election.

Regarding the uncontested elections, how many of them are uncontested because the incumbent worked to throw off anyone on the ballot challenging them.
The current election code is obviously written by incumbents, and it gives far too many gotchas that can be used to throw a newcomer off the ballot before the public gets a chance to voice an opinion. Which of course leads to the incumbent choosing the candidate, and not the people at large. While some of the requirements are necessary, some like the location of a staple are not. Some reform in this area of the election code directed at giving more choice to the citizenry instead of the entrenched office holders would be welcome.
For my local elections… well you know.

Local races are mostly Dems fighting other Dems for various seats. Village President/Mayor of Riverdale isn’t even a race; he could get in one vote. Usual slate of Thornton Township Z-Team candidates, with a former non-supported Assessor now running supported for for a new seat under Z-Team.
As for the gun in the library, please. He didn’t brandish it, threaten anyone, or otherwise cause any threat to public safety. Yes I know a library is a so-called “safe zone” under the CCL law, where crime isn’t allowed, but the reality is banning armed citizens doesn’t make us any safer, while allowing the violent free victims does. But Illinois is so backwards on this point it’s frightening.

Where I live the GOP assessor mounted a surprise coup against the GOP supervisor at the December caucus and got his own candidate nominated. In response the lameduck supervisor retaliated by slashing about $300,000 from the assessor’s $1.3 million budget. There is a video floating around of the subsequent township meeting where the enraged assessor let him know how unfair he thought that was. Good times.

In Sterling we have contested races for City Council, School Board, Township Supervisor and Road Commissioner. This is more we have had in some time. Most, if not all of the candidates are first timers. I was also very impressed with the views at last nights Candidates Forum and the interest and questions posed by the public. The forum was held via FB live.

Evanston has a group of “well-intentioned progressives” who are campaigning against a majority of challenging candidates with scare tactics like “They’ll turn us into Cicero or Rosemont.”

In Berwyn our mayor (Lovero) beat off a stiff challenge from one of the businessmen (O’Connor) and in my ward #5 the open primary had an ally of the mayor (Macedo) lose by 17 votes to a community organizer (Pabon).

What makes folks think this type of thing is good?
Education to firearms and looking at the location, you have to wonder aloud the mindset of someone who can rationally see this as “winning” or ok… or if they have a permit, don’t they already know the “rule” about libraries?
