  1. Will the carpenters be building new SoS facilities?

  2. Does Hastings have his own tumblers?

  3. Sen. Hastings do a U-Turn and stay put… a statewide bid can very berry costly. Plus your added allegations from last year with your former employee CoS can come back to hurt ya.

Heck, Secretary White may change his mind and go for his 5-6th term??

Comment by Pizza Man Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 10:44 am

  4. I think that’s great. He should go for it. Open field and why not Mike?

Comment by Chicago Cynic Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 10:44 am

  5. In a crowed race he might have good chance depending on Alexi. Hastings has a great resume and he’s a prolific campaigner. I wouldn’t sell his candidacy short

    Comment by Hard D Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 10:46 am

  6. I’m not poking fun of anyone getting in this race (so far…) because with a wide open primary, anything can happen.

Comment by NIU Grad Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 10:56 am

  7. Man, I’m gonna miss me some Jesse.
One of the few pols that never came across as one.

    Comment by Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 10:56 am

  8. I’ll see your carpenters union and raise you, two food workers unions…

“Locals No. 881 and 1546 of the food workers union, which is affiliated with the AFL-CIO, threw their weight behind Giannoulias”

Comment by Donnie Elgin Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 10:58 am

  9. Huge blow for the Alexi Giannoulias comeback tour. Other unions will now follow the Carpenters, along with money and support. Welcome to the race, Sen. Hastings.

  10. ahhh yes here we go

    Comment by Gohawks123 Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 11:03 am

  11. I could see IBEW, or at least some locals, throwing in with Hastings too.

Comment by Downstate Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 11:08 am

  12. Not to disparage the men in the race, but it is time for a woman as Secretary of State. Anna Valencia is running and is top-notch.

Comment by Timeforawoman Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 11:11 am

  13. Alderman Pat Dowell is also thinking about this race. When is the last time a Chicago Alderman ran statewide?

    Comment by 10th Ward Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 11:17 am

  14. == Pizza Man ==

I think the Legislative Inspector General said it best … read the report, Hastings was right on his decision.

Comment by Robin’ Giannoulias Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 11:31 am

  15. Alexi, free advice, take your donations you have raised so far from your family and finance friends and just pay off your 2.5M in campaign debt and take another Argentinian wine tour. It’s the safe route. If you couldn’t beat Mark Kirk, you’re not going to beat a Clydesdale like Hastings. And with Hastings formally in the race, the path out of the city has just narrowed drastically.

  16. The last thing we need is another heterosexual white male Democrat elected to higher office. A progressive straight white man should understand that collectively we must sacrifice our own ambitions to provide opportunities to those who have been oppressed for too long. Senator Hastings should support the campaign of a minority candidate.

Comment by Frumpy White Guy Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 11:46 am

  17. Jesse makes another run to avoid a divisive primary.

    Comment by 4 percent Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 12:12 pm

  18. saying he shouldn’t run because he is a straight, white man is just as wrong as saying he can’t run because he isn’t a woman or isn’t black or because he isn’t gay. while we must continue to create opportunities for all, we cannot impose the same injustices on white men that we are trying to solve for the others. the best people need to run and hopefully win, period. in terms of this race, its good to see hastings get in. he is smart, energetic, served in the military, and he doesn’t benefit from inherited family wealth.

Comment by Frumpy White Guy Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 12:46 pm

  20. Frumpy@11:46. I completely disagree.

Comment by Blue Dog Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 1:28 pm

  21. Anna Valencia is a hack with very little experience beyond politics. I’d like to see experienced professionals run these agencies. Look at what a mess Susana Mendoza has caused as someone extremely light on experience.

Comment by Right the wrongs Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 1:33 pm

  22. frumpy, we cannot lump everybody into simple categories. its possible to fully support everything being done to reverse the negative impacts of systemic racism, promote equality, and empower women and people of color AND still allow straight white men a seat at the table. your reaction to my statement shows a lack of understanding of the complexity of the situation we find ourselves in. you will never win the middle by quickly dismissing people by assuming that you know who they are.

  23. by the way, while my name might imply i sympathize with law enforcement, it doesn’t come from there. its my love of the blue line in chicago.

  24. ======Frumpy White Guy======

The notion of saying that a progressive white male shouldn’t run for office is the most anti-progressive things anyone could say. Don’t run for office? How about “let’s have the most qualified person run regardless of their socio-economic or demographic background.”

Comment by Hypocrisy Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 2:05 pm

  25. Well, apparently Hastings’ overwhelmingly diverse district disagrees w Frumpy, too: 82% of the vote doesn’t lie.

Comment by Uh oh. Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 2:15 pm

  26. Wow. Mike’s folks are sure working this thread today. But that comment about Susanna and the Comptroller’s office is bizarre. She’s doing a hell of a good job.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 3:25 pm

  27. Right the Wrongs ==> Misogyny much?

And hard pass on Hastings. Don’t need one of those kind of guys in statewide office.

Comment by Shytown Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 3:29 pm

  28. The bigger the field gets, the harder it is to predict. I guess Alexi’s cash and waning name recognition make him the front runner…but man, a whole lotta baggage there. Valencia is intriguing…Latina originally from downstate. But she was appointed by Rahm and has yet to run in a contested election at any level. Jumping too quickly? If Dowell is the only Black candidate she’s got a shot. Conversely, Hastings doesn’t have a natural base, which is probably his biggest impediment. But he’s got a great bio and no one will out work him. He might be able to piece together more labor support, especially from the trades. Can’t really count out any of the announced candidates, at least not yet.

Comment by Telly Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 3:40 pm

  29. Frumpy not sure where your coming from but your statement is extremely prejudiced in itself

    Comment by Hard D Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 4:13 pm

  30. Why Latina bashing, son?
    Or is it LatinX?

Comment by Wrong for Right the Wrong Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 6:33 pm

  31. …is being facetious. You know, be someone unlike his moniker.

  32. This is our guy for downstate.

Comment by Downstate Sportsman Tuesday, Mar 2, 21 @ 6:41 pm

  33. Looked him up, quite a resume. I’m intrigued to see what he has to offer.
