I’m curious, Rich, why you and Speaker Welch refer to Rep. Kelly Burke as “Leader” in today’s Cap Fax? Am I missing something? Or possibly it’s protocol that once a Leader, always a Leader, even if they are no longer such?

managed care is completely broken in IL. anytime legislation is filed to address its shortcomings, the MCOs are amazing at attending meetings and saying we will get back to you on that. they stall, bills die, and problems continue. providers are treated like criminals who are denied their payments due from the MCOs, and given no relief from the agency that oversees them. its pathetic that its been able to go on this long. i hope that speaker welch doesn’t stop at enforcing the bep goals, but rather take these MCOs to task and make sure that the providers who are caring for patients are not placed below the insurance companies in the eyes of hfs. its downright criminal what the MCOs get away with here, yet legislators have allowed them to get away with it. they know all about it, and they have for years. fix it!

Apparently, Springfield firefighters will soon be getting access to the U of I-developed saliva test for COVID.

For whatever reason, this test seems to raise hackles among some of the local pundariate. My opinion is that we shouldn’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. If these relatively quick, cheap tests mean more firefighters on the job until they get vaccinated, I’m all for it.

The pattern of winter not starting until late January continues here in central Illinois. Been mild till now, snow and ice yesterday, bitter cold this morning and now possible flooding rain for Saturday and Sunday.

Would like to clarify my statement on swearing yesterday. I got overzealous and said I swear a lot. I do my share of swearing, but it’s not like every sentence. Also, social skills are highly valuable, as is keeping employment, so I never swear professionally or anywhere it’s inappropriate. Know the audience and have a mutual comfort level first.

Got to work safely and in one piece this morning. Springfield got over 3 inches surprise snow yesterday (after only an inch or less predicted), and all city roads (including major ones) are in horrible shape this morning. Probably only one snowplow trip down College Street west of the Capitol Complex since the snow began. Horrible road conditions around the capitol this morning even with only 3 inches of snow.

Essential: Live on Springfield’s north end. All roads to downtown clear and melted. Side roads (College street) are gotten to after the main arteries and dozens of identified trouble spots are clear and safe. It was only 14 hours since snow stopped. Have a little patience.

For anybody interested in “progressive” vs “moderate” Dem politics, watch what is happening in Oak Park. “Defund the police” battles, village trustee inciting “riot” (with property damage) at mayor’s house, trustee going on Proft show to defend “whiteness,” trustees screaming profanities during meetings (including a “F*** No” vote), old school residency challenges knocking hard left Black candidates off the ballot. All bathed in incredible vitriol. Fun to watch if you think politics is sport; sad if you believe in good governance and community.

About roads: Move north… and then realize that in many large cities they don’t even bother plowing side streets until the snow really piles up.
One snow and the plow critics are already out. 3 inches of snow folks. If you can’t get through that on your own might be time for new tires.

Ken Griffin might have attracted some heat to himself after Citadel backed Robinhood blocked opening new positions on heavily shorted companies like GameStop or AMC, after Citadel provided billions of dollars to Melvin Capital in exchange for a share of future earnings.
On it’s surface it seems like something that should be securities fraud, or worse.

On my way to the post office this morning here in Decatur I noticed a guy wearing only a t-shirt and jeans holding up two signs on a busy intersection on the south side of town. I couldn’t read all of his writing, but his shirt was white with black lettering (not handwritten), and it said “China Joe Biden ” and some smaller letters , plus had an arrow pointing to his crotch ( I guessing the smaller lettering wasn’t positive) . The signs were covered with scribbles , lines and who knows what else conspiracy theory he was espousing . By the time I came back his way he was gone (cold maybe?) so I couldn’t get a photo or read more of his thoughts. The Q-feed crazies are still proudly among us, I’m afraid

For those interested in Oak Park - here is an article on the ballot challenge. Basically, candidate who pretty clearly lives at his parent’s house in Oak Park made a bunch of false statements under oath about a place he owns in Lombard in order to get fed bankruptcy exemption, homeowners exemption, and a HUD loan on parent’s home. So rock and hard place — were you lying then or are you lying now - actually the legal issue is a bit more nuanced due to vague/differing definitions of “residency” but the factual issue is pretty clear. “Community” ignores all that and says it is nothing but racism/classism (which, of course, may be the objector’s motivation, but facts and law are stubborn things). https://www.oakpark.com/2021/01/25/anthony-clark-off-oak-park-ballot/

With Alexi now in the running for SOS, is it just me or does anyone else think Pat Quinn is actually going to put his hat in the ring for either SOS or another statewide office next year? Since if I recall correctly, he hasn’t sat out a midterm election since about ‘82 or so.
