  1. It was kind of nice to have enough snow to be ‘interesting’ without it being so much you actually needed a flashlight, food, water, and blankets in the car like CBS (and others) warned about.

  2. Woke up and discovered that an unknown neighbor cleared last night’s snow off the sidewalk for the entire block. A nice reminder that there is kindness out there.

  3. Sounds like rice krispies in milk outside this morning as the wind rattles through the trees. Snapping, crackling, and popping:)

  5. Argh. I got my first snow blower in December. Since that time, we’ve not had any measurable precipitation. Frustrating.

  6. Admittedly I haven’t been paying as much attention to the topic as I should be, but Sen. McConchie (NW burbs)posted last night that we’re 44th in % of vaccine doses used. Looking at the NYT, we’re also in the bottom 5 states in terms of % getting at least one shot. We had done so well in terms of control all summer- what has happened?

  7. This might be already known, but Crain’s reported this morning that it will soon be bye-bye to the JRTC for some agency offices after the State’s purchase of the Chicago West Loop building at 555 W. Monroe. Crain’s story is behind the paywall so I had to use the Trib link:

  8. Completely non-political: This has been a great winter for birders in Illinois. Lots of far-northern species such as snowy owls, evening grosbeaks, etc., showing up around the state. Get out and enjoy!

My two brothers and I bought my Dad a snowblower many years ago. He enjoyed it so much he’d clear our driveway and then do the neighbors. You have a neighbor with a snowblower, maybe?

  10. As someone who spent years in the JRTC, I am happy for the state employees who will finally have a decent place to work.

  11. Tribune had an interesting editorial today regarding abuses when members of the legislature resign and county chairman pick their replacement. They used two recent Democrats as examples. Did they not mention Bill Brady, a Republican, because they didn’t know or didn’t care?

Comment by HL Mencken Wednesday, Jan 27, 21 @ 9:13 am

  12. Cassidy’s reputation as a reformer seems like it’s in trouble. Politico and the Chicago Tribune were full of disdain.

I don’t understand why when she could have run for an open seat in 2022 and certainly been the front runner.

Comment by Ferris Wheeler Wednesday, Jan 27, 21 @ 9:14 am

  13. 555 W. Monroe? That’s where Pepsi is (and Gatorade) they also have a test kitchen on the ground level. Used to walk by it every day on my way to work, in the before times.

  14. I got a black lab pup and the pup slept through the night and won’t leave my side.

  16. Labs are the best. Just one dog lover’s opinion.

  17. Saw a two groups of ducks winging their way north. Maybe a good sign for an early Spring or confused ducks.

  18. =Labs are the best.=

My first dog was a lab. He was a great dog. Since then I have had several spaniels and a retriever. All in all, dogs are just awesome.

  19. ==Labs are the best. Just one dog lover’s opinion.==

Make that two dog lover’s opinion. Have had 5 of them over the years. They are perfect dogs both outside for fun and inside the house for snuggling and protection. I know your pup is lucky it got chosen by you and vice versa, Gohawks123.

Lol. Labs eat more but don’t have to be taken to the groomer. Labs are pretty coming straight out of the lake or shower.

  22. Any good dog is a great dog. Ask any dog owner. There’s a reason they are referred to as man’s best friend

  23. I have owned a snow blower for about 5 years and it probably has been used about 4 hours in the 5 years.

  25. I agree about labs. Any dog that you bond with is the best you can have. Whenever I am away from home for more than a week my yellow lab will whine at the window. The wife calls and puts me on speaker phone and our girl relaxes and lays down on my side of the bed for the night. My pillow usually smells like her.

  26. Mark Buehrle stays on the Hall ballot. Now let’s keep talking about him because he deserves to be in. just compare him to some others who have made it in and you can see he deserves it.

  28. Have you ever sat at the vet and watched people come in with their dogs? All kinds of shapes and sizes, but everyone thinks their dog is best! We have our first shelter dog - it is fun to sit and try to figure out what dogs make up his heritage. Love him to pieces. We had a crazy cocker, and a beautiful collie before him They were all the best (well, that cocker was crazy but we loved him all the same.)

  29. I just received a text from Verizon stating that the 217 overlay area code (447) starts going into effect Feb. 27. On that day, all calls within the 217 require entering the area code as new 447 area code numbers will begin to be assigned then.

  31. I agree on labs as we now have our third black lab. I really like they they sleep well and like to lay by your side. One word of warning on your pup, labs are easy to train when young but they truly are the axiom that you cannot teach an old dog. To clarify, they will not change/learn after the age of 3.
