* I know I’m coming a bit late to this, but we were slightly busy yesterday with actual Illinois news. Anyway, I searched my email in-box for the word “impeach” and here’s what I found. Gov. Pritzker…
For the first time in United States history, a sitting President has been impeached on two separate occasions by the House of Representatives – a testament to the resiliency of our Constitution, but an ugly stain on our nation’s history,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Make no mistake: to hold accountable those who smear our democracy, who unleash violence and death upon the halls of Congress, who dance on the desks of duly elected public servants in the name of insurrection – and yes, those who incite it all from inside the world’s most powerful office – is the most patriotic thing we can do.
We cannot rebuild without ridding ourselves of what’s rotten. We cannot hope to unify without upholding the ideals of justice, democracy and liberty that tie us together as one nation. Today, Republicans joined with Democrats to send that message.
The events of January 6th, 2021 – and the weeks’, months’ and years’ worth of falsities and fantasies that led up to them – represented a culmination of Donald J. Trump’s longstanding efforts to channel hate and demagoguery into power. As a proud American, I have long feared the repercussions of these efforts, and the choice of the national Republican party to embrace them and its media ecosystem to amplify them. He has long posed a danger to our nation – and last week, the world watched in horror as his name was carried on flags – alongside the flag of our nation’s most infamous traitors, the Confederacy – in a siege on our Capitol. And I believe fully that we would be remiss to assume the threat of such efforts lies behind us.
But today, amid sorrow, amid worry, amid the bruising impact of a pandemic on pace to soon take over 400,000 American lives: I am hopeful. By impeaching President Trump on the charge of Incitement of Insurrection, the House of Representatives has taken a necessary step toward holding accountable a president whose very hallmark has been the derision of our democracy. In the constant pursuit of our nation’s finest ideals, the promise of a more perfect union lives another day. Our work to secure it continues, and I urge the Senate to take up its duty immediately.

Every day, we find out more about this horrific attack, the additional lives that would have been in peril if not for the heroism of officers like Eugene Goodman, and the failure of this administration to expeditiously dispatch Federal law enforcement to respond to armed domestic terrorists mere months after Federal law enforcement’s violent use of force against peaceful protesters.
“When I took the oath to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, I never thought I would live to see our President foment an insurrectionist coup on our nation’s Capitol, let alone intentionally delay sending the National Guard to protect thousands against a mob that planted pipe bombs, brandished weapons, and sought to hang the Vice President. One week later, the President has expressed no regret or accountability. The President is unstable, unhinged, and dangerous. Every minute that President Trump is in office represents an imminent threat to the constitution, our democracy, and the American people. We are a nation of laws, and the President must be held to account for his crimes, immediately removed from office, and banned from holding federal office again.
“Many will argue that letting the clock run out on this administration will do more to heal our country than impeachment. This could not be further from the truth. If we ignore this attack and what caused it in the name of unity, the violence will only get worse. If we allow the President of the United States to incite this attack without consequence, we threaten the future of our democracy and the peaceful transfer of power on which it depends.
“When Benjamin Franklin was asked in 1787 what kind of government we would have, he answered, ‘A republic, if you can keep it.’ Two and a half centuries later, the future of our democratic republic hangs in the balance. If we do what is difficult but necessary, the nation will survive this crisis and emerge stronger. The question is, are we still a democracy? Let us answer in the affirmative. Today and always.”

“We are at a perilous moment in our Nation’s history. President Trump, many of his allies in Congress, and media commentators on the right deserve blame for the circumstances that led up to one of the worst days this great country has ever seen. Since November, many in my party perpetuated the lie that the election was “stolen” and gave false hope to millions that the president could somehow remain in office after January 20th. That was never going to happen. There must be accountability for leaders who deliberately misled the public, but I fear that without thoughtful and clear-eyed leadership from both sides of the aisle, we are in danger of further violence and political unrest.
“While a convenient talking point, we must be honest that our country did not arrive at this moment in the last two months, or simply the last four years. Though many prefer not to admit it, political deception is a bipartisan disease that seems only to worsen and lead to violence. Last Wednesday is the second time in my short Congressional career that I’ve needed to thank law enforcement for saving my life during an act of political violence. The former because a deranged gunman believed leaders and agitators on the left that I and my Republican colleagues were a danger to America. We as a country have got to do better.
“There must be a full accounting of what happened leading up to and on the day of January 6th. Law enforcement must have all resources necessary to bring the perpetrators to justice. That investigation should be unimpeded and free from partisan influence. The investigation should be conducted in such a manner to sooth tensions and provide the public with confidence that law and order will prevail.
“Process matters. A snap impeachment conducted without a full investigation or without due process for the president accomplishes nothing. At a time when political tensions are at an all-time high, impeachment will drive people further into their corners and could lead to additional violence. Unlike what some Democratic leaders are saying, President Trump will not be removed from office under this process. The Democrats’ stated goal to punish the president and bar him from seeking federal office in the future certainly isn’t urgent. He will be removed from office under the law in less than one week. We need to lower temperatures, not enflame them. If, when a full accounting of the facts of January 6th comes in, Pelosi and the Democrats wish to punish President Trump, they can pursue that process with their party’s total control of the legislative and executive branches of the federal government.
“Our nation needs sober-minded leaders who will sooth a wounded electorate. President-elect Biden has missed an opportunity to act on his promise of unifying the country by calling for calm and pledging to listen to those who feel so ignored by our elected leaders. He is now the face of his party and will be the legitimately elected leader of our country in a matter days. I stand ready to work with President-elect Biden on solutions to the many problems our country faces. We should all wish President Biden success, for when he succeeds, our nation succeeds.”

“In less than seven days, we will inaugurate President-elect Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States. We should be using this time to bring our nation together, heal the partisan divisions, and move forward with a peaceful transfer of power. As I have listened to constituents on both sides of the political spectrum this week, a common frustration and anger are evident among many Americans. In this moment of escalating tensions, Congress must rise above the division and help heal our nation.
“As I stated last week, our Constitution is clear in laying out Congress’ obligation to count and certify the Electoral College votes. I also believe our Constitution does not envision impeaching a President without an adequate investigation or hearings. Our democratic system is predicated on due process and a thorough review of the underlying facts and evidence. Congress has yet to even receive a full briefing by the appropriate federal authorities on the events that occurred surrounding the riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.
“I oppose impeachment. Pushing articles of impeachment days before the inauguration will only inflame and further divide our country.”

I commend the Democratic and Republican members of Congress who voted to impeach President Trump for launching the attack on our Capitol and the shameful insurrection that threatened our democracy. Republican Rep. Liz Cheney’s words that “There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution” should be on the minds of all Republican senators as they vote. Removing Trump from office should be the easiest vote they ever take. No one, including the president, should be above the law. He must be held accountable.

There will be no uniting the country until the right-wing and the Republican party makes clear to all Americans, but especially their supporters, that Trump lost fair and square.

I have not been a fan of Rep. Rodney Davis in the past but I appreciate his comments calling out the irresponsible GOPers who misled their own people by saying the election was stolen and gave them false hope about overturning the election. I have a college-educated Trump-voting family member who I may send these comments to in the hopes hearing this message from an elected Republican may get through the fog of disinformation this person gets bombarded with on a daily basis.
That said, I wish the gratitude Rep. Rodney Davis feels toward law enforcement extended to the poor souls manning the metal detectors at the House floor. Even if Rodney disagrees with those being implemented at the direction of Speaker Pelosi, I hope going forward he directs that ire solely to her and never again hassles the Capitol police just trying to do their job.

Rodney Davis, as usual, speaks out of two sides of his mouth. He praises law enforcement and rails against additional security measures such as metal detectors at the House. He enables Trump and actively supported him throughout his presidency, but won’t stand up and vote for impeachment. The vote was on Impeachment not Conviction- that’s the Senate’s purview. However, Conviction has always been something Davis seems to have a problem with anyway. I am looking forward to the remap. Maybe this will be the last term Illinois will have to have such an self-serving Representative.

He will be graded as a failure. I wish he would have had the guts to stick to a tough stance on China but he caved in for a few bushels of commodities. I am glad he brought light to a horrible Iran policy. I hope Biden renegotiates a better policy than round one. I,unlike many, hope the best for the president. We are a country in a precarious position. Been that way for long before a Trump. God protect him, his family and the USA.

I think the big thing is we had a situation where people lost their lives here. Right now the family of the officer who lost his life trying to protect our Senators, Representatives, and their staff along with other American Citizens, are probably wondering we have a President who without question was an important part of this terrible action and we have two Representatives LaHood and Davis voting no on impeachment! It obviously has to be done. This was instigated by one person, who could have conceded a long time ago. The match was lit and many gallons of gasoline were poured on the fire. The result is a hideous display of authoritarianism and utterly antithetical to America. The lesson is that we should never take democracy for granted and should make it easier for citizens to vote and exercise their political will.

I believe that pro-Trump and anti-Trump factions will never “reconcile” - each side’s positions and perspectives are based on comprehensive and totally disjoint fact databases, therefore, there will never be agreements on the “facts”. However, in the end…
Keep in mind those who actually *voted* against impeachment from Illinois.
Insurrection isn’t impeachable to them. They can spin all they want, be cowards to the reality, but votes matter.
Let that sink in. Insurrection isn’t impeachable.
These words can’t shake that. When they come back to this state, their districts, those members come back to our state with how they voted.

Look at FBI crime statistics and tell me which side has been committing domestic terrorism all over the country. The Raleigh PD even arrested 21 white supremacist instigators at their blm protest.

Hey lahood, last I checked, asking for forgiveness and healing usually involves some sort of admission of fault and your role in it and includes steps you will take to fix the problem. Maybe start by apologizing for signing on to a lawsuit to disregard the will of the american people and overturn an election for your party? Maybe hold the president and the rotten far right violent elements in your party accountable?Maybe then we can discuss unity.

Trump should have been removed with the 25th Amendment long ago - it’s clear he has clinical narcissistic personality disorder, as a cursory read through the DSM-5 would show (or at least tell someone he needed to be evaluated). Doing so at this moment in time would create a dangerous civil war within the White House and wouldnt’ remove him prior to Biden’s inaugural, and I have mixed feelings about a rushed impeachment trial. Wait out the week, have the trial later (though it may be true that the Constitution prohibits this after he leaves office - scholars seem split on this). Let Biden focus on COVID.
Flyin’ Elvis - Carter wasn’t that bad - had Reagan not undone his CAFE rules we would never have been dependent on foreign oil and we’d have emitted far less greenhouse gasses. And Republicans are echoing his human rights policy, at least when it comes to China…

Rep. LaHood just wants to sweep things under the rug. The second impeachment and moving the case to the Senate will clear the path for investigators to dive deep and uncover the nefarious actors that encouraged the riotous and seditious events to occur. The so-called Party of Law and Order needs to be reminded of what it means to respect law and order.

I have written multiple emails to Rep. LaHood, my representative. In each one, I have urged him to find a microphone and denounce the lie that there was a “stolen election.” Every Republican office holder needs to publicly say that the election was fair, there was no significant ballot fraud, and that Biden/Harris won fair and square. Until then, the “unity” they claim to want will be out of reach.

Full disclosure: I voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020 elections. I also voted cross-party for down-ballot elections. I consider myself an independent voter. I totally agree Trump must go, and he will on Jan. 20th. The impeachment will die with Biden’s swearing in, as it will be moot. But the Illinois Republican Party as a whole has once again absolved itself of responsibility for leadership; only Adam Kinzinger voted to impeach. That’s it?? The Party that complains about looting and rioting can’t find a spine to deal with the instigator of an insurrection? And they wonder why they totally fail to have a meaningful role in Illinois politics? Just amazing.

Mike Bost probably isn’t interested in sharing anything with journalists that he doesn’t have to, so I went looking for his floor speech so we could be disappointed by him too.
“If we are truly going to begin the work of healing the deep divisions in America, we must first turn down the temperature and tone down the rhetoric. I fear that efforts to impeach President Trump or force Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment will only make a bad situation worse.”

I have no issue with the House vote to impeach. Trump deserved it. However, by the time the trial begins in the Senate, Mr. Trump will be out of office due to his term expiring.
A trial will not in my opinion heal this nation. The last impeachment trial intensified opinions on both sides of the issue. A new trial will most assuredly do the same thing.
Just trying to inject some unpopular common sense here.

The short term benefit of the delayed Senate trial is that it may make Trump afraid to pardon himself and his family. Abusing the pardon power could shift Republican votes against him.
Republicans have to purge themselves of the Trump authoritarians. Conviction in the Senate would be a start.
The Republican Party in Illinois needs to find its way back to the middle. The incumbent Republican politicians may not be able to get there. Certainly not on their own.
Maybe an alliance of big money donors can recruit candidates and elect competent moderates. In a different era I think that is how we got Senator Percy.

A quick google reveals some NYTimes reporting indicating that a “seige” started long before Trump arrived to speak. Also shows a perimeter breach before Trump finished talking 40 minutes away. Andlastly, shows some pretty good size ladders. I guess those people got an advance copy of Trump’s speech and got their “incitement” ahead of time. Or maybe, they intended to have a riot and skipped Trump’s rally entirely. Not saying they weren’t supporters, just that you can’t blame his words that they weren’t around to hear.

I guess calling insurrectionist, after the fact “special”… and he (the President of the United States) saying he loved the insurrectionists is “Fake News”, unless you think someone faked a video of that same president saying it to a camera.
This idea of “timing” or “not causing” or even not supporting what happened is wholly inaccurate.
So, to the post and that…
If you are voting with Mary Miller and opposed to impeachment, Illinois needs to realize four members of the House from our state are fine without impeachment of someone inciting the insurrection… for weeks.

I must have missed that one. I can’t remember even hearing the word “insurrection” prior to January 6th, let alone it being promoted. I’m pretty sure I would have noticed. Along with the Capitol Police and basically everyone else. But you carry that water, brother. And I love how a Twitter ban makes you feel justified in not looking at the facts. I guess you and the other people Jack Dorsey believes are ok can tweet each other about it. Say hi to OJ, the Ayatollah and Raycip Erdogan for me. I hear they’re all real nice, except for killing people, that is. Sheesh.

Someone needs to make it crystal clear Mike and Rodney and the rest of the IL GOP that things don’t work like that any more. If dems have to answer every time a member of antifa or blm sets fire to a Wendy’s or throws a bottle of water at a cop, then they need to answer for it when their supporters beat a cop to death with a fire extinguisher and smear feces on the walls of the US Capitol building.

I’ve been around long enough to have seen a few things in our country. For awhile, we couldn’t go too long without someone being assassinated. We’ve been in several unpopular and unnecessary world conflicts. The economy has been in the dumps on several occasions. We’ve always had challenges in this country. While it may be the freshness of recent events, I don’t know that I’ve seen a time of greater discourse, where people on both sides of the political aisle speak with hatred for their fellow citizens. I don’t know where it’s going, but I hope those entrusted with power have a plan. Otherwise violence will be the new norm.

That’s not the purpose of a trial. We have trials to hold people accountable. It is the means of ensuring responsibility for those that take none on their own. It’s to deter those that may have similar ideas from acting on them.
But if what you really want is healing there is a way to accomplish that. Encourage the President to accept responsibility and resign. Have him admit that his words and actions were ‘totally inappropriate’ and acknowledge that when people look at them ‘they’ agree. Spare the country the division and consequences of an impeachment trial and allow a legitimately elected President to repair the damage and restore our belief in democracy.
