The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today reported 5,862 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 97 additional deaths.

- Winnebago County: 1 male 80sCurrently, IDPH is reporting a total of 1,046,030 cases, including 17,840 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 76,107 specimens for a total 14,339,584. As of last night, 3,642 in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 749 patients were in the ICU and 386 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.
The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from January 6–12, 2021 is 7.3%. The preliminary seven-day statewide test positivity from January 6–12, 2021 is 8.3%.
As of last night, 703,525 doses of vaccine were delivered to providers in Illinois, including Chicago. In addition, approximately 268,525 doses have been allocated to the federal government’s Pharmacy Partnership Program for long-term care facilities. This brings the total Illinois doses to 972,050. IDPH is currently reporting a total of 384,658 vaccines administered, including 48,811 for long-term care facilities. The 7-day rolling average of vaccines administered daily is approximately 25,400 doses.

Remote or In-Person, if you don’t have healthy staff it’s hard to teach students…
“Kids are less than two weeks back from Christmas break and the COVID situation is beginning to become an issue that could require action soon.
That’s the message from Clinton Schools Superintendent Curt Nettles who, in a letter to families Tuesday, says they are watching the numbers of not only cases but close contacts who have to quarantine and indicates they are becoming concerned about staffing in their buildings.”
“While many in the community want an exact figure of cases or students quarantined to be established before the district goes to remote learning, Nettles has been hesitant to make those types of declarations. He also notes this situation is different because when staff is involved, it becomes a matter of if the district can continue to operate with certain staff members in quarantine.”

constant sadness looking at this report. when you are in a store….wearing your mask….or other place where people are risking their lives to serve you, thank them. mask up, socially distance, wash your hands, stay home if you can.

I know how perverse this is, but at least we didn’t go back over 100 deaths. Keep vaccinating.

I fear the falling death rate is partly because Covid has already burned through so many congregate care facilities. The dry tinder has burned and it is moving into greener branches.
