Kinzinger will vote to impeach President Trump

Illinois U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger said Tuesday he will vote to impeach President Donald Trump, saying he “encouraged an angry mob to storm the United States Capitol.”

“There is no doubt in my mind that the president of the United States broke his oath of office and incited this insurrection. He used his position in the executive (branch) to attack the legislative (branch). So, in assessing the articles of impeachment brought before the House, I must consider: if these actions … are not worthy of impeachment, then what is an impeachable offense?” Kinzinger said in a statement. “I will vote in favor of impeachment.”

Kinzinger is the third Republican in the U.S. House to say he will vote to impeach the president. Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyoming, the third-ranking Republican in the chamber, and Rep. John Katko, R-New York, also have said they will vote to remove the president during his final days in office.

…Adding… What a country…

The Illinois National Guard will deploy roughly 200 service members to Washington, D.C., ahead of President-elect Joseph Biden’s inauguration, state officials confirmed Tuesday.

The Illinois contingent will consist primarily of military police and security forces, a reflection of a recent FBI warning about the possibility of armed protests surrounding the swearing-in ceremony on Jan. 20. The state also will be sending soldiers and airmen to help with logistics and communications, as well as an Air National Guard chaplain.

The service members are expected to arrive in Washington as early as Wednesday. Their presence has been requested by the District of Columbia, according to state officials.

  1. This is the bright line for me.

A lot of folks made the horrible mistake of supporting Teump. They might not deserve forgiveness, but if they can stand up now and help pull the nation back from a hot Civil War, i can forgive them.

If they are going to stick with Trump even after he incited an armed insurrection of 8000 on Congress, the donr belong in public office.

  2. Thank you, Representative Kinzinger.

  3. Good step. Next is to clean up those elements in your caucus who choose to blatantly lie to achieve party goals. That includes Kevin McCarthy.

  4. There has not been an inauguration like this sine March 1861 with Lincoln. And I bet he had fewer troops to protect him.

  5. Liz Cheney beat you to it, Adam. Also, you did not vote to impeach the last time. wrong choice then.

  6. Thanks Rep Kinzinger. I think you’ll have a lot of friends on both sides of the aisle on this vote.

  7. It has to be done, if unity and healing are is truly the goals. Video footage shows how atrocious and violent the insurrection was. The threat is to elected officials of both parties. The vice president was threatened. Some movement is happening for impeachment among Republicans, and McConnell is reportedly happy for it.

  8. Good to be on the right side of history. Trump’s post election behavior is abysmal. And worthy of immediate impeachment.

  9. The reason for the difference in Kinzinger’s vote between this impeachment and last is clear. He’s running for Governor.

  10. If McConnell backs it, this impeachment may result in a conviction. The first attempt had no chance.

  11. What about LaHood and other elected officials in the US Congress? Will they vote the Impeach Trump too?

  12. Kinzinger is a fraud the tea party put this fool in office and he`s turned his back on them long ago

  13. Should have done it the 1st time when he was voting 92% of the time with Trump. Lit the match to burn the building down and now he is running out before it collapses.

  14. === the tea party===

    Who?

  15. It takes courage to vote to impeach or remove a president from your own party, something that only one other person (Mitt Romney) has done in history. Kudos to Kinzinger for doing the right thing.

  16. I’ve said it before. Kinzinger is running scared. He’s trying to curry favor with Democratic map drawers in hops of keeping his district.

    I’m not impressed.

Comment by Just Reading Tuesday, Jan 12, 21 @ 7:44 pm

  17. He’ll keep his district. This is a national concern of Republicans in Congress worrying the money will dry up as such radicals as the National Association of Manufacturers call to remove the insurrectionist traitor. (Whether they can do this without losing primaries as the “good people” in the Republican base act as they have the past several years will be something to watch in 2022.)

  18. Poor Adam, he didn’t get named secretary of the Air Force.

  19. He is voting for his own demise then. To willfully not represent the voters that put you into power is a major issue.

  20. Kinzinger is doing the right thing, and needs to take the low-key approach. His public statements and anticipated vote can be viewed as a wager that the Illinois political environment can once again become accepting of a Percy-JR Thompson approach to politics. Many of us came to know these past icons of Illinois GOP politics, whose acceptance by the national party ended with the Reagan election. The difference between Percy/Thompson and Kinzinger (at least at the moment) is that they were careful to be measured in what they said at all times. This made these centrist political figures acceptable to many of the Illinois GOP conservatives. If they had been in their prime at a different point in history, either would have been great presidential candidates.

Adam needs to cool some of his other rhetoric if he wants to have that future. He does not need to say anything edgy. Just cast the vote, but be measured and factual in everything you say, and you will further develop the image you need. Do not say anything a Trump supporter will view as factually incorrect or critical of voters. Everyone is already paying attention – you do not need to be clever. Take the heat and do not appear out-of-control. This is indeed your moment — don’t blow it.

  21. === Do not say anything a Trump supporter will view as factually incorrect or critical of voters.===

    Yeah. ‘Bout that.

Trump voters “believe” the election is “stolen”

They aren’t rational, thoughtful, or honest to facts.

Now is the time to stand and be heard and and call out the traitors and the insurrection.

=== He is voting for his own demise then. To willfully not represent the voters that put you into power is a major issue.===

    Meh.

The insurrectionists are not constituents to a democracy.

  22. Friendly reminder that Kinzinger votes with Trump 92% of the time, and he’s possibly the most two-faced member of the Illinois delegation. Either stand up to this 10 cent despot or don’t. It’s like he’s personally loading cannons pointed at the Americans then running in front and yelling “Don’t shoot!”

He votes like an far-right Republican then goes on MSNBC to play Everyone’s Favorite Moderate. What a joke, but broken clock theory I guess.

  23. I served in the college Republicans at ISU with Adam 20 years ago. He was honorable then on the McLean County board and now in Congress
