*** UPDATED x1 - Kifowit still in *** Rep. Williams: Vote makes it clear that “House Democratic Caucus is ready for a change in leadership”

Posted in:

* Background is here if you somehow need it. Rep. Ann Williams (D-Chicago)…

Today’s vote makes clear the House Democratic Caucus is ready for a change in leadership. I want to thank Representative Kathy Willis and Representative Stephanie Kifowit in joining me on this journey to elect Illinois’ first woman Speaker. I am grateful for the support of so many of my colleagues and will continue to work to earn the support of the rest and unify the caucus.

*** UPDATE *** Some folks I’ve talked to tonight misread that press release and wrongly assumed that Kifowit was supporting Williams. Here’s Rep. Kifowit…

I am still in the race.

…Adding… Rep. Williams…

I’m sorry if my statement was misinterpreted…Rep. Kifowit remains a strong contender as we both continue to make the case for new leadership in the Illinois House.

  1. Rep. Williams didn’t just show up yesterday. She has been building alliances for years. And it has paid off.

  2. Not to dispute Ms Williams, but 30% is not exactly a clear message.

  3. I’m wondering how someone with 18 votes thinks she is the chosen one. If she’s lucky, she will top out at 22-25 votes. In politics, you need to know how to count. To be Speaker you need 60 votes. As of today, she’s not even a third of the way there.

  4. I definitely have another perspective from Rep. Williams. What’s clear from the numbers I’ve seen is that 70% of the House Democratic Caucus supports Mike Madigan. A diverse caucus of the Black Caucus, Latinx caucus, women, downstate and moderates. The only thing clear is that he has broad support and has the best interest of the caucus top of mind. This was not a time for Rep. Williams to take a victory lap.

  5. === Democrites===

    What’s a “Democrites”?

    Do you have to mouth breath and be angry and be Rush Limbaugh person to think this is clever and winning?

  6. To the post,

    The title of this post remains true as long as 60 is denied by the 19+ to MJM.

    The magic number is still 9

  7. 51 does not = 60

  8. I read it as the fact that three women are vying for the Speakship and that it’s historic and that all three are a part of the 19 that have been on this journey together. I think it’s just confused with the announcement that Willis dropped. Of the current field, if none of the 19 break, then the next speaker will be a woman.

  9. ===Speaker Karen.===

    I would tell you to get [censored], but that is probably what the GOP will put on mailers in an effort to continue to remain in the super majority.

  10. I think we should take a closer look at anyone who sends out a misleading press release after a test vote. That release was premature and not the sign of a pragmatic chess player like Madigan.

  11. After this first vote, it seems clear that the vast majority of House Democratic Caucus members are looking for a big tent candidate that won’t aggressively insert potentially divisive identity politics into this race.
