Mitigations could begin easing next week

Region’s across the state may start seeing a reduction in COVID-19 mitigations soon.

On Wednesday, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced starting on Jan. 15, any region that has met the metrics for a reduction of mitigations will be able to move out of Tier 3 of the mitigations. […]

“Illinois did not experience post-Thanksgiving uptick that plagued much of the rest of the country,” Gov. Pritzker said. “And we’re watching closely in this incubation period post-Christmas and New Year’s. I’m cautiously optimistic as there are some early signs that some regions have made real progress and won’t reverse that progress.”

In order for a region to move back to Tier 2 mitigations, a region must experience less than 12 percent test positivity rate for three consecutive days AND greater than 20 percent available intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital bed availability AND declining COVID hospitalizations in 7 out of the last 10 days.

Tier 2 does not allow for indoor dining, however.

Um, Region 1 is up to 10.5, which is the highest in a month and it’s trending up. Winnebago County is at 11.5, the highest it’s been in three weeks.

I’d wait until this surge quells and then go Tier 2.

Given the inconsistent adherence and compliance with mitigations we should all be very concerned about the UK strain and the South African strain.

That ship has sailed. I was in Macomb yesterday at lunch hour, and more restaurants had full parking lots than didn’t.

Macomb and Springfield will not be the only municipalities not following the rules if not being able to eat indoor goes into February.

Go anywhere south of I-80 and you’re sure to find many communities with diners and pubs clearly open for business. Some try to follow distancing guidelines and encourage mask wearing (few have staff masked though…)

This seems premature. Given the new strains circulating, the desperation elsewhere in the country, the slow pace of vaccination, and the recent end of holiday travel, we should wait longer to assess developments before loosening the reins.
