As members of both the Latinx community and the House of Representatives, we recognize our unique responsibility to support leadership that can best advance the Latinx equity agenda. To this end, we held a forum on December 23rd with the two declared candidates for Speaker of the House. The process remained open and an email invitation was sent to all House members, however, no additional candidates came forward.
The COVID-19 pandemic has blatantly exposed the negative and disproportionate impact of systemic disinvestment and disenfranchisement on the Latinx community. Beyond the grim health, education, housing, and economic data that reveals the brutality of the current crisis on our community, Latinx House members have experienced first-hand the devastation in our own families and neighborhoods. And all of this, happening against a backdrop of unrelenting anti-immigrant sentiment that has been battering our community for the past few years.
We recognize this to be a pivotal moment, with a tough budget challenge ahead, the urgent need for COVID- 19 recovery, and the demand to protect minority rights in redistricting. After careful deliberation and input from several community organizations, the majority of Latinx members determined that Speaker Madigan is in the best position to move these priorities forward in the coming term. In these unprecedented times, we are being called to address matters of life and death in our community, and must act swiftly with full support from leadership, to alleviate this unmitigated pain and suffering, through emergency housing legislation, expansion of health care coverage, and protection of community supports. We will continue to hold Speaker Madigan and other State leaders accountable for responding to the needs of the Latinx community.
