11,101 new confirmed and probable cases; 196 additional deaths; 5,138 hospitalized; 1,081 in ICU; 9.5 percent case positivity rate; 11.4 percent test positivity rate

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today reported 11,101 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 196 additional deaths.

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 823,531 cases, including 13,861 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 114,503 specimens for a total 11,481,848. As of last night, 5,138 in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 1,081 patients were in the ICU and 606 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from December 3 – December 9, 2020 is 9.5%. The preliminary seven-day statewide test positivity from December 3 – December 9, 2020 is 11.4%.

  2. Thanksgiving spike will arrive next week, if it arrives at all.

    Would be good to see new cases drift lower before that spike comes.

    That didn’t happen today.

  3. We are 14 days from Thanksgiving.

    The spike would be showing itself over the past few days and trending higher right now. No evidence yet to see that holiday gatherings made things that much worse.

  4. This could be it. This could be the beginning of a spike.

    We will know a lot more throughout the week and probably Tuesday of next week just how bad it really is.

    Lets hope it stays level.

    @Cool Papa Bell has it correctly. The spike, if there was one started last week.

    In our schools we are not seeing a spike and numbers are down from before Thanksgiving.

  6. DeKalb County’s rate of cases is starting to drop, but rate of deaths is climbing rapidly compared to past weeks. We’ve had 5 deaths in 5 days this week for a pandemic total of 53 as of yesterday.

  7. Here’s an interesting stat I just looked up. 30 of the 50 states, including Illinois, have a per capita COVID death rate worse than Sweden’s. At one time, Sweden was looked at by many to be the poster country for a lack of COVID-preventative measures.

  9. Every spike we have had because of a holiday has taken 3-4 weeks to start showing up. So, no @JS Mill and @Papabear, we would not already be seeing it. Not to mention that 14 day count assumes that everyone that becomes infected will have caught it Thursday. Black Friday or flights back on Sunday are more likely.
