Somebody needs to take a basic political science class

Posted in:

* During Gov. Pritzker’s news media briefing today, a reporter submitted a question prefaced by the fact that it has been 24 hours since Pritzker had called on Speaker Madigan to answer questions or resign. The question

How long will you wait to make him resign?

Since this was a question submitted online, I double-checked with Pritzker’s press secretary to make sure she asked it accurately. She did.

…Adding… Another question today was based on a comment by Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst), who said this week that the governor and the attorney general should consider filing state charges similar to the federal charges in the ComEd probe.

Um, the governor can’t do that. (Not blaming the reporter for that one, by the way, because the person was just following up on a legislator’s comment.)

Weird times.

…Adding… I’m told the reporter got it wrong about Mazzochi. She apparently said she hoped the governor was also talking to the AG to see if there was information in the federal documents that could support state charges.

  3. Far from being the “enemy of the people” like our current Pres. likes to call them, journos are largely a healthy force. But like any group or profession, there are the incompetent ones

  7. Attorney General can’t do that either. This is what happens when people don’t take civics.

  8. Why prove to others your incompetence and ignorance?

Mazzochi on the investigation committee… with Demmer and Wehrli…

… it’s truly priceless, the three of them, lol

  9. Forget politics, can anyone anywhere actually make someone resign? I mean, I realize it’s frequently offered as the alternative to firing but resignation by definition is a voluntary act. I know 4th graders who could ask better questions than this.

  10. Completely embarrassing for Mazzochi, who is a high-priced attorney. I guess Durkin wasn’t sending his best to the special committee.

Comment by Precinct Captain Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 3:49 pm

  11. Pretty sure the votes to make him resign are in the Dominion server. /S

Comment by Bruce( no not him) Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 3:53 pm

  12. Maybe McCombie can try a coup of the Dem House caucus if we’re gonna pretend that understanding governing matters.

Prolly be just as successful too.

  13. Other readers may have similar experiences, but it never ceases to amaze me the number of people I’ve met in politics and/or government who seem not to have taken even an elementary political science class.

Including some pretty high up officials. On both sides. Just incredible.

  14. - low level - Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 3:57 pm:

To be fair, government is one area of our society where we pretend that all other skills translate or make someone qualified to run it and be in it. As we see over and over again, they don’t. We don’t put the fans in the seat to manage the ball games or take the shots, yet we do for government.

You do realize this is an Illinois-centric website, right?

  17. Is it just me or did it sound like a lot of the reporters at the pressers been coming from the Sinclair School of Journalism (aka Channel 20) lately?

Comment by Chatham Resident Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 4:24 pm

  18. Mazzochi- if it doesn’t have to do with making sure her pharmaceutical company clients make money she should stop talking. Apparently never studied anything else.

  19. Medill is stellar.
Columbia College has a great program.
    EIU produces award winners.
The Daily Egyptian (for you Brownie) is top notch.
UIUC has Ebert Fellows for Christ’s sake.

And the press corps covering a Governor of our state poses a question like that?

    Yeesh.

Comment by Inverted Pyramid Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 4:40 pm

  20. That press conference was unhinged today. Amy Jacobson’s suggestion to move the standards for warning level up to 15% positivity was mind-blowingly Trumpian. See, there’s no problem. We haven’t triggered the warning because we moved the warning. As the governor said in response, “that’s crazy.”

And yea, the “make Madigan resign.” Really?

Comment by Southern Skeptic Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 4:42 pm

  21. Closing restaurants to protect public health is government overreach and tyrannical but also please force resignations of elected officials from co-equal branches of government.

  22. === She apparently said she hoped the governor was also talking to the AG to see if there was information in the federal documents that could support state charges.===

    To that “update”…

Can’t she also ask the AG directly, if she hasn’t already.

  23. Point of information:

    Dear Inverted Pyramid,

I would respectfully add the Public Affairs Reporting program at the University of Illinois to that listing of outstanding journalism programs, based on our alumni base.
