  1. Illinois led the nation in COVID cases and COVID deaths yesterday.

We will lead the nation in COVID cases and COVID deaths again today.

Reasonable people would be asking why.

It’s reasonable to ask why not a single Democrat in the General Assembly has questioned Governor Pritzker’s pandemic response.

Darren Bailey is nuts. But atleast he is asking questions. People can see all of the deaths, so they know something is not working and something needs to change.

Right now, Republicans are the only ones offering an alternative to 11,304 deaths.

  2. ===Right now, Republicans are the only ones offering an alternative to 11,304 deaths.===

    Just what is that, exactly?

  3. Thomas Paine “Right now, Republicans are the only ones offering an alternative to 11,304 deaths.” What is the alternative the Rs are offering? I must have missed something.

  4. TPaine,

Somewhere your nieces and nephews are planning their socially distanced Thanksgiving wondering who will lead the turkey discussion, without you there.

  5. =Republicans are the only ones offering an alternative to 11,304 deaths=

Would that alternative be the politicization and outright refusal to wear masks?

Or making up imaginary numbers of people who have actually died that are far below the factual numbers?

    Or…?

Comment by LakeCo Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 12:31 pm

  6. Positivity rate down from yesterday, hate to rain on the covidcrazies “the world is ending” parade but that’s some good news

Comment by Toofunny Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 12:32 pm

  7. All we know is that the Team Pritzker approach is not working.
Maybe nothing can be done, but it might be a good idea to have the GA begin to examine the problem. They really have not done much of anything to review the Governor’s activities.

Yep. They’re offering indoor dining, no masks, and hundreds of thousands of deaths. No thanks.

  10. “Illinois led the nation in COVID cases and COVID deaths yesterday.

We will lead the nation in COVID cases and COVID deaths again today.”

Our numbers are horrible. The level of deaths is completely unacceptable.

Sincere question - Did we lead in total death count or in percentage of people that died relative to the population? It’s an important distinction if your point is that we are doing worse than everywhere else.

Comment by Montrose Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 12:57 pm

  11. I get that Pritzker is trying to avoid doing a full shut down with Thanksgiving next week, but these numbers are atrocious. What we’ve tried doing isn’t working, clearly.

Comment by Fixer Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 1:07 pm

  12. We have been in the top 20% of all states in deaths per 100,000 since the pandemic started. Comparisons to other counties are also troubling.
The deaths in nursing homes have been very high and the Pritzker Administration’s response to complaints has lead to an outside attorney being hired to determine why at least 270 of the complainants were not investigated.
The GA should be more active in trying to improve the situation in Illinois.
Not meaning to just pick on Team Pritzker. We should all be doing our best to deal with this pandemic.

Comment by Back to the Future Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 1:08 pm

  13. “Republicans are the only ones offering an alternative to 11,304 deaths”

And the alternative to death would be?

  14. =What we’ve tried doing isn’t working, clearly=

Actually, the Tiers do seem to be working - Region 8 has moved from Tier 2 to Tiers 3 and in the last 7 days the daily and 7-day positivity rates had reversed course and begun decreases. As IDPH folks have said before - due to the incubation period of the virus - it takes 4 days at the minimum for the mitigations to show improvements in cases.

Comment by Donnie Elgin Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 1:17 pm

  15. every elected official in Illinois should be terrified by this death list. it is all across the state. not just Cook County. Mask up.

Comment by Amalia Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 1:18 pm

  16. On the bright side, the positivity rate curve appears to have flattened and started to decline in some regions over the past 4 days, even before the Tier 3 mitigations kicked in. Unfortunately deaths will continue to increase as a lagging indicator, but the mitigations might be starting to work.

Comment by Chicagoan Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 1:25 pm

  17. Rational, fact-based debate does not work on nearly 50% of the population. You can’t give them statistics and expect them to fold up their belief system. Their egos are tied up in this false construct. You have to lead them in very tiny steps to figure it out, a piece at a time, and they have it feel its their own idea. How to do that, I dunno. They are not going to respond to an authority figure or an academic; they distrust those sources. I think it has to start at the dinner table when a rational thinker asks them the right leading questions, without judging them. When an opinion leader in their circle asks and follows up those questions. You have to get them to question a piece of data without the punishment of being mocked and insulted for finding out they’ve been wrong. Maybe show them an example of someone from a previous generation come to terms with being wrong about something and finding out their world didn’t end when they evolved a new understanding about it. Make them feel they are a winner for accepting new information.

  18. We didn’t lead nation in deaths percentage or total. South Dakota and Wyoming were worse percentage wise and Texas had more total deaths.

This situation is still dire and the amount of people in my eastern bloc community who are intelligent and still aren’t taking this seriously, let alone the fringes of the community gives me a bleak feeling.

Comment by all luck Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 1:31 pm

  19. Ya’ll act as if the Republican alternative has to be rational.

Yes, the Republicans are saying all of the elderly or otherwise at risk should stay inside and lock their doors, while everyone else does whatever they feel like. But as “American President” reminds us, when the people are dying of thirst, if you don’t give them water they will drink sand.

The Democratic Plan is what? More of this?

We are expected to reach over 9000 more deaths by March 1 right now. A vaccine might bend that curve. But right now we are looking at nearly 100 deaths a day for the next 100 days.

Ask yourselves, ask your legislator, ask your governor, What is the plan to change that?

PS: Waiting until Joe Biden is sworn in is not a plan.

@Almost the Weekend - The “Uncle Tom” jokes never get old in our family, I blame my brothers, but unlike them I live in a state where buying cannabis is legal so my absence this year is their loss.

  21. Darren Bailey is my state representative, soon to be state senator, which I am not proud of at all, and it because of him and others like him saying and doing everything opposite of the CDC,IDPH, the Governor and the science that people just do not follows what needs to be done. Of course the other elected republican don’t or wont try to keep him in check and/or opening say things against what he is doing

  23. Republican alternatives to 11,304 deaths: The whole thing is a hoax: They’re reporting every death as Covid related now, even if someone died in an auto accident: They were going to die anyway: They voluntarily died for their grandkids. Those are about the only alternatives that come to mind right away, please let me know about any others.

  24. ===All we know is that the Team Pritzker approach is not working===

Actually, we know a lot more. Like many Rs in this state are actively inciting rule breaking and ignoring common sense. Those are the things that are causing failure. I agree that stricter measures are needed immediately, but I suspect that is not what you meant.

Comment by Jibba Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 2:02 pm

  25. Thomas Paine- Is the Republican plan to build more ICU hospital beds literally overnight, employ hundreds if not thousands of healthcare workers who will magically appear out of thin air, and provide for thousands of rehab beds for those who are fortunate to survive a hospital stay? Because unless it is, it is already a pre-fail. We, as a society, are not pulling our weight when it comes to washing, masking, and distancing. And because we have failed to do so, we have weaponized COVID-19 to the point we are at today. Washing, masking, and distancing were, and are, our WMDs- weapons of mass destruction- against COVID-19 until vaccines are available. We are not helpless. We never have been, except when we ignore our own better selves.

  26. ===Illinois led the nation in COVID cases …===

Being the fifth most populous state doesn’t make it too hard for this statement. If you normalize by population, Illinois isn’t in the top 10. At least we stopped the upward trend at the beginning of the week. Now we need to work together to get the numbers trending down, again.

Comment by From DaZoo Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 2:27 pm

  27. Oops. Hit “say it” too soon. Not top 10 for weekly rolling average of new cases. Unfortunately #6 for weekly rolling average of new deaths. :(

  28. 13th how could anyone not be proud of Darren?

  30. Schools are still open leading to more spread. My wife had 6 of 18 in-person students out this week. Other states and cities are closing their schools in response to rising numbers, California, Michigan, and NYC. If eating in a restaurant is dangerous, so too is school lunch in a cafeteria or snack break in a classroom.

Comment by Shane Falco Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 2:46 pm

  31. I trust the Democrats response to COVID a lot more than the Republicans. That being said, I don’t understand why we haven’t expanded the U of I saliva testing to more people or actually attempted to do contract tracing. Obviously contract tracing is really hard right now with the number of cases, but I don’t think we should give up on it.

  32. - West Side the Best Side -

You forgot oh and if you’re obese or have high blood pressure or diabetes you should have been healthier anyway.

I think the only way to really lick this thing is to do like Europe is doing. But we do not have the federal support to be able to pay people to stay home so that is not an option. At this point in time we are pretty much telling people to be responsible, to stay inside if you don’t have to go out for work and if you do have to go out for work to go to work, come home and stay there. For everyone to wear their mask when out and about and not to gather or get closer than 6′ (if it were up to me I’d make that 10′ to account for the drier air).

I really don’t know what else could be done other than add rapid testing to every nursing home so they could check their workers, patients and paramedics, guests etc. every time they enter. But honestly, I don’t think the GOP is going to present this as an option.

    Comment by cermak_rd Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 2:58 pm

  33. I just hope the vaccine comes soon and it is effective enough with no dangerous side effects.

Comment by Dutch Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 3:31 pm

  34. “We didn’t lead the nation in death percentages.”

Good golly, if Bruce Rauner had responded to criticism over his handling of the Quincy Veteran’s Home by pointing out 93 percent of the veterans lived, would we have thrown him a parade?

But if you want to argue that point, fine. Illinois ranks 10th in Deaths per Capita.

Only two slots behind North Dakota, which is held up as the nation’s biggest failure.

Our Midwest neighbors are all far below us in deaths, only Michigan is even close.

If we had the same death rate as Wisconsin, 4900 Illinoisans would still be alive.

Think about that and get back to me.

But stop trying to tell me Darren Bailey owns this. Govermors still own.

Comment by Thomas Paine Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 4:22 pm

  35. “Republicans are the only ones offering an alternative to 11,304 deaths”

As far as I can tell from my conservative friends, their strategy is “if you’re scared, stay home”.

Not sure how that will reduce the number of cases/deaths.

Comment by SomeGuy Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 4:23 pm

  36. Thomas Paine:

Why don’t you get serious for a second instead of embarassing yourself suggesting that the Republicans have a plan. They have the Darren Baily plan. And for you to suggest that’s an alternative is ridiculous.

You seem to be all up in arms about the state’s response. How about you tell us what you think should change about the response. You’re yelling into the wind and not saing anything of value. Put up or shut up.

Comment by Demoralized Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 4:39 pm

  37. And if you want to know what my plan would be it would be this: shut everything down. Everything. You can go grocery shopping (close non-grocery areas of big box stores by prohibiting people from buying any grocery/pharmacy related items), go to the pharmacy, and get gas. That’s it. Otherwise everything is closed down. It will only be temporary. I think we can handle it for a couple of months. And if we can’t, then shame on us.

Comment by Demoralized Friday, Nov 20, 20 @ 4:46 pm

  38. Sorry - prevent anyone from buying any non-grocery or non-pharmacy related item
