ā€œRules for thee but not for me?ā€ ā¦@GovPritzkerā© admits he might not be in Illinois for Thanksgiving. “Escaped.”

And an “advisory” is just that.

  14. I think some are of the mistaken understanding that the discovery of even the smallest transgression from the governor or public health officials prevents the spread of the virus or make it irrelevant somehow. Meanwhile the hospitals are struggling with capacity issues, and there’s a great deal of unnecessary suffering because people haven’t taken this seriously. If real or imagined hypocrisy was an effective treatment for Covid-19 then the situation would be different.

Comment by AC Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 10:58 am

  15. I said this last week, we need consistency in the rules and behavior. The IDPH director asked a valid question last week and statewide leaders and mayors should consistently reply and think about and be prepared to answer.

Comment by PraireState Sense Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 10:58 am

  16. I have always struggled trying to understand the vitriol directed towards public officials when they institute safeguards based on medical and scientific advice in an attempt to safeguard the public.
What do they believe the motivation is for Pritzker or Whitmer and others in enacting these measures? That they delight in disrupting employment, education, interscholastic sports, dining, travel, etc etc?
Nobody gets this angry if they believe someone with good intentions does something they disagree about.
The measures being enacted are in direct proportion to our collective failure to do the simplest things. The ‘if I get it I get it’ attitude is fine if when you get it, you isolate yourself from others and if needed, you refuse to seek medical treatment and burden first responders.
If you’re the guy who sees himself as Mr. Chivalrous and/or Mr. Christian and opens doors for people, lets others with fewer grocery items check out ahead of you and attends religious services or otherwise prays and you refuse to wear a mask to safeguard others, well then you are a dangerous hypocrite.
We do things every day we don’t like or would prefer not to do, its just part of our responsibilities as citizens in a community. If your truly love your neighbor, then wear a mask.

    Comment by Cubs in '16 Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:06 am

  21. ===donā€™t do what they are requesting everyone else do?===

That would be an issue, but in this case it’s not because as far as I can tell no such request has been made by the state.

  22. Hacking into signs is inappropriate. I will admit that I am
A supporter of Governor Pritzker but even if it was hacked against Rauner, it would have been wrong. This road signs are for safety. You should not put people in danger for a statement no matter what you want to say

Comment by Jason Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:11 am

  23. === an “advisory” is just that. ===

Legally true, morally false, politically untenable. Scientifically banned word.

The Moral Test is “What if everyone did it, what if nobody did it?”

If no one travelled for Thanksgiving, we would all be safer and lives would be saved.

If everyone travelled for Thanksgiving, the pandemic would explode, hospitals would overflow and hundreds of thousands would die across America.

Politically, Pritzker is not only feeding the animosity of the anti-maskers but fomenting the resentment of all of those who are making sacrifices. That goes for his immediate family, every parent has told a teenager at some point “my house, my rules.”

Taking a private jet does not make it better, btw. It just reinforces that there’s one set of rules for the Wealthy, another set of rules for the rest of us poor slobs who have a ten hour drive for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Comment by Thomas Paine Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:16 am

  24. Rich, he has said multiple times at recent briefings that people should avoid travel for Thanksgiving. Why would he urge a particular action for public health sake and then do the opposite himself. How can he expect people to listen to him then?

If you take COVID seriously, the Gov undermining his admins own public health advice should be a matter of concern.

  26. A lot of people knocked on a lot of doors. Some people knocked on doors when it was really inconvenient for them
to do so. The least he can do is skip a trip to Florida for one Thanksgiving.

Iā€™m not saying he didnā€™t earn it. iā€™m not saying he doesnā€™t deserve it. iā€™m not saying the trip is hypocritical. But the political backlash isnā€™t worth it. His judgement will
    take a hit for it.

  28. I’m a big fan of JB’s substantive performance during the pandemic. But I wish he would do a better job of walking the walk. Sure, its an “advisory” but he should be modelling best behavior. We’ve seen what happens when leaders model bad behavior (Trump, Rand Paul, etc.) As for the politcal fallout, ask Gavin Newsom … https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article247222289.html

‘Advisory’ is the crux of this thread. Despite it all, since its just an ‘advisory’; he can do this.

Comment by PraireState Sense Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:20 am

  31. JB has good reason to travel, he is an important person who makes decisions on science. Whether it is celebrating a Joe Biden victory, a women’s march, or social justice march he will not be a Covid spreader. Covid spreading is for Bruce Rauner types. It’s a strange disease that seems to focus on certain groups.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:24 am

  36. The defense of a billionaire taking his Gulfstream to FLA is just something. Let’s be real for a second the ONLY reason the travel restrictions are advisory is there is really no way to restrict travel by the State.

Comment by JS Mill Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:30 am

  39. Iā€™m a fan of JB, but he should have thanksgiving at home with members of his household. Itā€™s a pretty small sacrifice to prevent a large uproar. And itā€™s the right example to set.

Comment by Excitable Boy Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:36 am

  40. Itā€™s funny. Yesterday the vast majority of readers were adamant that all schools should be closed to prevent the spread of Covid, but the vast majority seem fine with the governor hopping from hot spot to hot spot for the holiday because itā€™s and ā€œadvisoryā€ not an ā€œorderā€. I wonder how many people will die as a result of his selfishness from either bringing back the virus directly or by others inevitably seeing his irresponsible actions as a guide.

Comment by Jed Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:38 am

  41. I’m beginning to think that Pritzker may not run again. He’d likely win, but what’s the prize for him?

His progressive tax was defeated. He owns it.
And the defeat seriously diminishes options for solving state issues, while tarnishing his brand.

Many of the perks of being governor have been reduced with Covid, while the scrutiny of his personal life have only been magnified.

The Illinois Democrat party is in near civil war, and he’s stuck with Madigan for as far as the eye can see.

Other than that I see him running again.

  43. The defense of JB is quite touching. Many people have been very inconvenienced by his executive degrees. They can’t afford to just fly away to their mansion.

    Comment by June's Cleaver Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:42 am

  44. There is a difference between can and should. Can he do this? Yes. Should he do this? No. Not after telling everyone else that they should not do the very thing he is now doing himself. His credibility shrinks every time he doesn’t follow his own admonishment. When the legislature has abdicated its involvement in this crisis and he is flying solo with it, he needs all the credibility he can get.

Comment by Wonk Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:45 am

  45. Own goal, unforced.

Neither JB nor the state can afford this.

  46. Projection at its finest.

What’re the chances that (a) Pritzker *won’t* be out “celebrating” and … (b) DeVore will?

If so — does this mean he pays himself?

    Comment by Mr K Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:55 am

  47. The leader of the working manā€™s party wants his fellow members to eat turkey sandwiches alone while he heads to Sunny Florida in his private jet.

This is the year the Pritzker tenure turned rancid. Too bad, because he was looking solid the first 18 months.

Comment by Outsider Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:56 am

  48. === while he heads to Sunny Florida in his private jet.===

Are ya just jealous he has a private jet or…

Pretty sure Oā€™Hare and Midway… still open.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:57 am

  49. In all seriousness … and perhaps I am incorrect … did the Governor ever try to prohibit people from going to their vacation home? I mean, if I have a condo in Florida, did he ever say I should not go to it (especially if I drive or take my private jet)? I donā€™t think he ever did.

Comment by Is it 2021 yet Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 11:59 am

  50. As has been said here multiple times, people don’t do nuance.

Is his family trip to FL to be with other family or to a family vacation home? If it’s the former, it doesn’t look good from a governing stand point. If it’s the latter, than it’s only highlighting the haves vs. the have-nots.

Comment by From DaZoo Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 12:01 pm

  51. JB lead in April and May….but I have no idea what happened but he has become a joke recently as he is failing to lead.

Shut the state down JB. People dont need to be discussing memories over Christmas but instead be making them.

If you leave for Florida during a spike you are abandoning the rest of us. This state will suffer greatly if you fail us.

    Don’t fail us.

Comment by The Dude Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 12:02 pm

  52. === It doesnā€™t say you canā€™t travel anywhere. ===

True, but IDPH issued a statement less than a week ago urging everyone to stay home as much as possible, traveling only when absolutely necessary. ā€œWe wanna eat turkey on the beachā€ does not fit into that category.

    === Pretty sure Oā€™Hare and Midway….still open ===

ā€˜Let them fly coach.ā€™ Is an argument, I wouldnā€™t recommend the press Secretary use it though.

Comment by Thomas Paine Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 12:11 pm

  53. === Is an argument, I wouldnā€™t recommend the press Secretary use it though===

Since Iā€™m not the press secretary, or anywhere near this administration, and they are grateful for that Iā€™m sure…

The point remains to the goodballs.

The point is about the silly, not the nuance.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 12:15 pm

  54. === The Illinois Democrat party===

Unless you are a Democrat., and think youā€™re are Rush Limbaugh Iā€™d say no. What do you care about the ā€œDemocrat partyā€

    Do better.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 12:18 pm

  55. Leaders lead by example. Sometimes it’s a speech, but more importantly, it is the action of the leader that defines the leader. Heading to Florida, if he indeed does do that, is showing to the rest of the state that what he says doesn’t match his actions. It’s the “Do what I say, not what I do” theory. Not a good optic for this time that we are living in.

Comment by Cardinal Fan Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 12:24 pm

  56. “JB lead in April and Mayā€¦.but I have no idea what happened but he has become a joke recently as he is failing to lead.”

I’m not saying Pritzker hasn’t made some missteps as of late, but folks were much more willing to be led in those early days. People took it seriously, the fatigue had not set in in the same way. The Feds actually provided financial support to people, so they were less anxious. We are in a different, much harder moment now.

Comment by Montrose Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 12:36 pm

  57. ā€œI will pay $1000 the first journalist who provides me with footage of Pritzker out celebrating Thanksgiving with friend and family.ā€

Comment by Da Big Bad Wolf Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 12:45 pm

  58. “defines the leader. Heading to Florida”

Covid is just not a big enough crisis to keep JB in the state.

Comment by Lake Michigan Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 12:58 pm

  59. Another big admirer of the Gov here, but this is a political and ethical faux pas.

There will be tens of thousands of elderly/semi-elderly Illinois residents bereft of their children’s and perhaps, grandchildren’s presence this Thanksgiving.

As Illinois’ First Citizen, it morally behooves the Governor to conform to the travel advisory - for the sake of those tens (hundreds?) of thousands who will be alone this Thanksgiving, if nothing else.

It’s the least he can do.

  62. As someone who used to change the message on the portable message boards for IDOT, hacking them is very unlikely . The computer has to be attached to the port under the locked lid inside the battery box, so that means a employee likely added that to the sign (unless a hacker somehow had a key to enter the battery box and a laptop with the software to change the message). If it was a IDOT sign and employee, disciplinary action should be done to the offender

Comment by Mises Tuesday, Nov 17, 20 @ 8:55 pm

  69. @Tommydanger

Let’s really look and talk about the science of this. We aren’t really doing that. Are positivity metrics the best metric or the only metric Illinois should be considering. That’s not what at least one of Pritzker’s scientific advisors says. The studies that have been done about how COVID is spread - indoor dining for instance. What is the control in those studies? Did everyone “surveyed” stay at home and then only go out to an indoor restaurant and got COVID? We are destroying people’s lives and businesses and, with all due respect, Gov. Pritzker is not a scientist or a doctor. Dr. Ngozi Ezike is a pediatrician and an internist, not an expert in infectious disease. If some scientific or medical voices are not heard, we aren’t really having a discussion about this. And frankly, I’m not sure how so many news outlets became experts on a virus that not even the experts understand. Sincere, honest discussion needed - unless this really isn’t about health.
