The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today reported 4,342 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 69 additional deaths.

• Fayette County: 1 male 80s
• Ford County: 1 male 50s, 1 female 90s

• Woodford County: 2 females 90s, 1 male 90sCurrently, IDPH is reporting a total of 355,217 cases, including 9,345 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from October 14 – October 20 is 5.7%. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 66,791 specimens for a total of 6,950,105. As of last night, 2,338 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 502 patients were in the ICU and 194 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.
*All data are provisional and will change. In order to rapidly report COVID-19 information to the public, data are being reported in real-time. Information is constantly being entered into an electronic system and the number of cases and deaths can change as additional information is gathered. Information for a death previously reported has changed, therefore, today’s numbers have been adjusted. If I was the Governor or IDPH I would just simply say that today the state is moving back to Phase 3 statewide regardless of each remaining non-mitigated region’s positivity rates.

As someone eluded to yesterday, the numbers are probably too big now for contact tracing to even be possible, but I emailed IDPH in regards to the level of contract tracing in the state and they replied:
“All of our local health departments are doing contact tracing for COVID-19. We do not have specific numbers at this time.”
That was surprising.

Using the regional data (3 day delay) to strip away Champaign county from the total numbers IDPH publishes each day:

IDPH reported a statewide positivity of 5.3% on Sunday, but when you remove the massive bias created by UIUC’s sweeping testing, the unskewed picture for the state is a 6.0% positivity rate.
IDPH needs to start reporting statewide positivity without the UIUC tests included.
This also raises questions about the comparison that Pritzker makes between Illinois and other states, but my beef is with the math.

IDPH not measuring contact tracing is a lot like President Trump not wanting to get tested or others to get tested.
If you aren’t measuring it, no one has any proof of how bad you are doing.

7 day rolling average is the one used for determining if mitigation is needed, Suburban Cook is at 7.2% for 7-day average.

Yesterday’s 5.5 would have been 6.3 without Champaign County. Today’s numbers not yet posted on IDPH so I can’t adjust today’s. Of course, Champaign outside of U of I likely has some issues as well so the adjustment might be as much as a point higher.

The latter. I’ve contacted the “IDPH COVID-19 Email Team” twice now and both times they replied very quickly. Yesterday they wrote back in under 10 minutes.

This is from a bulletin sent out by the Lake County Health Dept. yesterday:
“Lake County, Ill. — The Lake County Health Department is reporting ’substantial’ community transmission of COVID-19. To protect students, staff, and their families and slow the spread of COVID-19 in the community, the Health Department is recommending that public and private K-12 schools in Lake County transition to virtual learning.”

Not sure IDPH people are looking at this correctly.
When you look at our death rates compared to other states and other countries you see Illinois doing very badly.
Back is not a MD, but it seems places like Illinois has some health system issues that might be addressed now in a different way than in the past.

1. Covid seems to cause people with Obesity issues more problems. The USA obesity rate is much higher than just about any place on the globe. Looking at the Nordic, Asian or other countries where obesity is not as big an issue. It seems our death rate is much lower.
2. People with Dietetic issues also seem more vulnerable.
3. Our health care systems in Black and Brown communities are stranded and appear underfunded.
4. Overall we as a state did a poor job in noticing and addressing the Nursing Home death issues.
These are all issues we can address now. They are big issues and the state should spend some time and money on things that can make a big difference.

Those reporters during Q&A at the presser today seemed to be way too obsessed about bars and restaurants. Makes me wonder where their priorities lie outside of work.

Public Health officials have my sympathy. I have no idea what they’re supposed to do when a fraction of the population has just up and decided they don’t care about anyone or anything but themselves

Thank you so much. Plus it also seems like with some of the reporters’ questions, each of them might as well throw their hat in the ring to run in 2022. Either that or it’s the typical gotcha questions they’re wanting.
