  1. And this is the guy the Trib endorsed, because Madigan.

    Oy.

  2. JoanP beat me to it.

Comment by Former Downstater Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 12:33 pm

  3. His remarks are nasty and un-American. The house divided rhetoric is sadly becoming a reality as the right zooms into bizarro world.

BTW, Dems gave African Americans the first black president. Republicans give them voter suppression. Who do you think they believe?

Comment by Jibba Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 12:37 pm

  4. How do we get the Republican Party back from these ignorant and inept people? Maybe we could give them smart pills washed down with a shot of empathy.

Comment by Last Bull Moose Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 12:40 pm

  5. It’s Curran’s last resort.

Comment by Unconventionalwisdom Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 12:43 pm

  6. Curran should be going to confession after those remarks.

Comment by West Side the Best Side Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 12:45 pm

  7. “Death comes for us all”

makes it hard to argue you have a stance on literally anything that will help people.

Comment by TheInvisibleMan Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 12:45 pm

  8. With language and ideas like Curran’s, does the GOP really not know why it struggles with African-American voters?

The party of personal responsibility sure hates taking responsibility for its governance as it relates to poor POC communities. It’s only Democratic local electeds’ fault, never the governor, like Rauner, or the president, like Trump.

Comment by Grandson of Man Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 12:51 pm

  9. Curran is a great example of what seemed to be the migration of southern Dems to the GOP after 1964…

The anger framing the words too.

The Raunerites of this state need to excise themselves from the Raunerite leadership, the Trumpkin rhetoric, and move forward from the likes of a Curran/Ives/Oberweis mindset of race

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 12:57 pm

  10. I thought about skipping that part of the ballot, given Durbin won’t be losing his seat. I’m really happy now I voted against this…person.

    Comment by Cheryl44 Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 1:02 pm

  11. What an embarrassment. Given the lack of campaign money and platform the campaign is to be as divisive as possible and hope local media gives you “free” advertising.

I hope Willy Wilson gets more votes than this clown. Heck the Libertarian candidate may have a shot at 3rd.

    Comment by 1st Ward Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 1:13 pm

  12. A bigoted cop? Say it ain’t so

Comment by Gobbagool Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 1:27 pm

  13. Willie “Gloves Off” Wilson?

Comment by What about Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 1:28 pm

  14. ===major party candidate===

Barely describes the present Republican Party in Illinois and certainly doesn’t describe Mark Curran. He could run for a mosquito abatement district trustee and screw the election up.

Comment by Nagidam Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 1:33 pm

  15. Mark has been a whack job for most of his life…just getting nuttier….Trump already dragging most GOPies down (aw schucks) but Curran is just icing on the anchor

Comment by Annonin' Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 1:33 pm

  16. “Cut your neck”—really, Mr. Curran. These remarks certainly qualify as mortal sins. Better run to the confessional and seek absolution for this rhetoric.

    Comment by Rudy’s teeth Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 1:38 pm

  17. I got confused after seeing the Senate race as being described as “unusually competitive.” There hasn’t been a competitive race since Kirk-Giannoulias. Barring some flameout by Tammy Duckworth, there probably won’t be one until 2026, assuming that is a) when Durbin retires and b) that the R’s find their way out the wilderness. It’s a long way away, but there isn’t much reason to believe that b) is gonna happen.

  18. This is a textbook example of where the ILGOP has gone wrong. Nominating a candidate who is that anti-abortion to run state is at best a way to lose in a landslide.

What the ILGOP has going for it right now is that Curran is so certain to lose by a huge margin that it is easy to ignore him. If the Dems has less solid candidate, somewhat like Curran would not only lose, but by getting noticed would bring others down with him.

Comment by Gooner Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 2:11 pm

  19. The Tribune endorsed this guy, but not Oberweis?

Comment by Retired SURS Employee Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 2:16 pm

  20. Can’t say I want either of these two candidates as my senator. At 75 I wish DD had retired gracefully to give someone else a chance. Durbin is ensconced as a national figure but I can’t see that he’s done much for Illinois lately.

Comment by Responsa Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 2:25 pm

  21. ===but not Oberweis? ===

Because… Sandoval? Didn’t read it. Just guessing. lol

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 2:35 pm

  22. Well he’ll always have that Tribune endorsement and they’ll always have to defend it.

Comment by Pundent Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 2:42 pm

  23. Complaints of harsh rhetoric by Curran? Just saw a Durbin ad where he is holding a miniature Donald Trump in the palm of his hand and then slams him to the ground. Very senatorial of him/snark.

    Comment by Louis G Atsaves Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 3:12 pm

  24. Annonin’, you win the Internet today for “icing on the anchor.” I’m still cracking up.

Comment by CEA Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 3:27 pm

  25. ====“icing on the anchor.” ==

Every now and then, he comes up with a gem.

Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 3:29 pm

  26. When will decent conservatives shout this nonsense down?

Comment by AlfondoGonz Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 3:31 pm

  27. Sometimes I wonder if some of these extreme right GOP figures are really Democrats in disguise trying to ruin the Republican party. Then I snap back to my senses.

Comment by Independent Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 3:39 pm

  28. ===”Black Lives Matter is an evil entity. I’ve never supported Black Lives Matter. They’re in bed with the abortion industry, and defund police, and they stand for so many evil things,” said Curran during a virtual town hall for central Illinois Republican voters last month.===

    Deep, cleaning breaths, Mark.

Comment by Nick Name Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 3:51 pm

  29. Every now and then I worry about the state of things.

Then “counselor” Astaves delivers one of his trademarked, inane, “yeah well what about” comments.

And the world seems a little less unpredictable.

    Comment by Flying Elvis'-Utah Chapter Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 3:54 pm

  30. “when will decent conservatives shout this down”

Sorry, crawled into bed with this sociopathic rhetoric four years ago because of fear of Hillary Clinton.

The only thing we’re negotiating now is price.

    Comment by Flying Elvis'-Utah Chapter Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 3:56 pm

  31. Come on, Mark. use the term “projects” around Black leaders.

Comment by Amalia Friday, Oct 16, 20 @ 4:15 pm

  32. =Just saw a Durbin ad where he is holding a miniature Donald Trump in the palm of his hand and then slams him to the ground.=

You should aspire for the GOP to be better than what they’re showing instead of engaging in weak whataboutism. Instead of crying how the deck is stacked against you, the media is biased, or the old reliable standby (Madigan) maybe look for candidates that can actually get elected in this state.
