3,059 new cases, 32 additional deaths, 1,755 in hospitals, 392 ICU patients, 3.7 percent positivity rate

* Illinois has topped 1,700 hospitalizations just once since mid-June and has topped 390 ICU patients only one other time since late June. Brace yourselves…

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today reported 3,059 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 32 additional confirmed deaths.

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 310,700 cases, including 8,910 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from October 1 – October 7 is 3.7%. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 72,491 specimens for a total of 6,105,780. As of last night, 1,755 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 392 patients were in the ICU and 163 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

Following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, IDPH is now reporting separately both confirmed and probable cases and deaths on its website. Reporting probable cases will help show the potential burden of COVID-19 illness and efficacy of population-based non-pharmaceutical interventions. IDPH will update these data once a week.

*All data are provisional and will change. In order to rapidly report COVID-19 information to the public, data are being reported in real-time. Information is constantly being entered into an electronic system and the number of cases and deaths can change as additional information is gathered. For health questions about COVID-19, call the hotline at 1-800-889-3931 or email dph.sick@illinois.gov.

  1. Shut it down. Full closure this time. Criminal penalty for violators. Its not going away with the current plan.

  2. Went for take-out today and had to go elsewhere because there were several Covidiots in line without masks. Stupidity reigns even now.

Take a breath. The raw number of positives is not meaningful unless looked at in context. We tested the 3rd highest number yesterday with 72,491. Additionally, Illinois has a 7-day moving average of 3.7% positives.

  4. Just had to cancel and postpone a mediation since the other side is apparently one of the 1755 people hospitalized with this deadly disease. I hope they get better, and am very, very thankful that the mediation was set to be done virtually.
Campers, this ain’t goin’ away until people stay apart, keep stayin’ apart, and start / keep wearin’ their masks.

  5. ===Take a breath. The raw number===

Yeah, go ahead and just ignore hospitalizations and ICU admittance.

    Context?

I’m sure - OneMan -‘s comment on the Skillicorn post is a solid context… and you’re ignoring it.

    Context… seriously?

  8. This is depressing. All the numbers are really bad. Not sure what can be done but I hope someone knows.

Everyone please vote early or by mail. We can’t be sure they will have in-person voting on Nov 3.

  9. Not a great report. Hopefully the state is doing a better job with contact tracing and getting testing into downstate communities. I was shocked at how restrictive testing was when I went to the QC a week ago and needed to get a test.

  10. Also need to put ankle bracelets on people who should be in quarantine. I know two people who are positive and one only needed to be in hospital one night for oxygen, who are going to bars and golfing and their follow up tests still say they are positive. As symptoms are mild they also don’t see the need for masks. The golfer went by themselves but at the course they were paired with two people and they did not feel the need to tell them they were positive for the virus. Then we wonder why we can’t get this under control.

  11. Going the wrong way. And winter is not yet here.

A vaccine won’t solve Covid-19 overnight. People will need to behave in ways that slow the spread.

  12. If you look at a US county map of new cases per capita it seems that the best predictor of cases is the behavior of the neighbors. A high case rate in one state drives up the rates in adjacent states. Minnesota has strict rules but is surging, especially along its borders with the Dakotas and Iowa. Michigan has some of the strictest rules in the Midwest, but the Upper Peninsula is surging along with neighboring Wisconsin. Indiana does not have particularly strict rules but it has a lower case rate that seems to benefit from the low rates in stricter Michigan and Ohio.

Illinois reflects to a lesser degree the climbing rates in its neighbors. It’s illustrative that Cook and the Collars (from 10.4 to 14.3 new cases per 100K population) all have per capita case rates below the Illinois average (15.8 per 100K). The rest of the state drives up the state average.

The Northeast US has had the lowest rates since the start of the summer. I note that they have policies restricting long term or overnight visits without a negative test or self quarantine. Hotels in many of those state require a signed statement that the guest either has recently test negative, has self quarantined, or is a transient on their way through the state if not from a state with low rates. Chicago adopted a policy like that, but it’s not clear how much that can do to reduce Illinois rates without a much wider application of some policy like that.

  13. Region 4 is at 6.1% today. Tomorrow may be the day the region rejoins Phase 4 in full if it stays below 6.5%.

There should be an agency that you can report them
to, anonymously of course. That’s the very definition of Typhoid Mary, who refused to stop being a cook even though that activity was spreading the disease.

Those two other golfers deserve to know whom they can sue for lost wages and medical bills.
