Question of the day

Posted in:

* Chicago Tribune endorsement

Rep. Darren Bailey, R-Xenia, causes trouble in Springfield (in a good way) because he doesn’t go with the flow. He challenged Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-home directives in court as executive order overreach. He calls out members of his own party if he believes they’re leading the state in the wrong direction. On taking a legislative pension, which he declined, he says: “I believe that the position of representative and senator are not careers, but should be treated as times of service to our state. It is irresponsible to collect a pension for an elected position while the working-class pensions are in jeopardy.” Right on. Bailey faces Olney business owner Cynthia Given. Voters in this district should send Bailey to the Senate where he can continue to challenge the status quo. He is endorsed.

“Right on”?

OK.

Rep. Bailey is, of course, a member of the Eastern Bloc, which wants to kick Chicago out of Illinois.

* The Question: Should Rep. Bailey reject this Chicago-based endorsement? Take the poll and then explain your answer in comments, please…

And, yes, this is a snarky question.

  1. No… not if Bailey wants to stay groovy.

Comment by Dotnonymous Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:44 am

  2. No. Peas in a pod, they are. The Trib wants to slash pensions and Bailey would hurt himself so that the rich don’t have to pay more. Now if the Trib editorial board can find a million fools like Bailey it might get its chance to whack workers.

Comment by Grandson of Man Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:45 am

  3. I voted yes. He needs to reject foreign interference with Downstatestans elections.

Comment by Montrose Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:45 am

  4. No, most politicians are opportunistic and hypocritical. Why would accepting this endorsement change that?

Comment by Steve Rogers Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:47 am

  5. Of course he should. To accept an endorsement from hated Chicago would be hypocritical, and the Republican party never engages in hypocrisy.

Comment by West Side the Best Side Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:48 am

  6. Send it back. And maybe get Devore to sue them for defamation of ‘character’.

Comment by LoyalVirus Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:48 am

  7. No
Doesn’t matter to anyone south of Kankakee whom the Chicago Tribune endorses

Comment by SIU Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:49 am

  8. Snarky? It is downright cray-cray. Of course he should reject the scandalous endorsement of a yankee paper.

Comment by JS Mill Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:49 am

  9. Is this not like asking Jefferson Davis if he wants the endorsement of the SJR?

Comment by Give Me A Break Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:51 am

  10. Voted yes just so I could write this. The endorsements are a new level of theatre of the absurd. “You’re doing a great job, but won’t call out Madigan. Next!”

Comment by Eloy Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:51 am

  11. Yes. Why should these Chicago fat-cats boss around his legislative district? Voters should send a message that they will not accept this elitist interference by choosing Cynthia Given on their ballot.

Comment by NIU Grad Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:52 am

  12. In Bizarro Illinois, where Bailey lives (see old Superman comics for explanation of Bizarro Earth), everything is the opposite.

So if an endorsement seems good, he should reject it. If a position is logical, he should oppose it. If a policy makes sense, he should sue it.

Bailey World. Bizarro World. Same difference. /s

Comment by Streator Curmudgeon Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:52 am

  13. No. He should say “even Chicago can see that I’m insa..er a fighter for the conservative movement. Also, Mike Madigan.”

    Comment by MG85 Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:53 am

  14. Made for Each Other

Comment by Lynn Becker Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:55 am

  15. He’s a fool if he doesn’t.

Get a news cycle out of their “considered endorsement,” get a second news cycle out of his “principled rejection.”

    Day one stuff.

    Comment by @misterjayem Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:57 am

  16. No. Because it will be historically symbolic. When they write about the demise of the Tribune and how it lost it’s way, the story will be punctuated by how the paper chose to endorse an anti-masker in the midst of a global pandemic. I see it as a teaching moment.

Comment by Pundent Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:01 pm

  17. Curious how many people have ever had a
discussion with Rep. Bailey? This isn’t meant to be a positive comment.
To the question show those big bad Chicago people how tough you are and reject any endorsement north of 80.

Comment by John Lee Pettimore Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:05 pm

  18. “Right on”?

Kristen’s still trying to get a seat at the cool kids table.

    Groovy.

    Comment by @misterjayem Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:07 pm

  19. Yes, he should reject this endorsement, and any money that comes from outside his district. He doesn’t need the outside interference in his tilting at windmills.

Comment by Bruce( no not him) Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:07 pm

  20. =Bailey causes trouble in Springfield (in a good way)”=

LOL. Republicans outside of the Eastern Bloc privately think he is a self serving blow hard and an embarrassment.

Rep. Kelly Cassidy causes trouble in Springfield in a good way. Bailey is a caricature of no influence. The saddest part of the entire discussion is that his constituency is unrepresented at the Capital and don’t appear to know it . . . . . . .

Comment by Bear Down Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:08 pm

  21. If Bailey is actually pure in ideology, he should run away from anything to do with Chicago. However, just like his Clay County court ruling, he’ll accept what he can get, where he can get it.

Comment by thisjustinagain Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:09 pm

  22. That endorsement was far out and outta sight.

Comment by West Side the Best Side Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:12 pm

  23. Is this 1978? Being endorsed by the Chicago Tribune has zero impact. Particularly downstate.

    Totally and completely irrelevant.

Comment by Upon Further Review Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:12 pm

  24. voted yes. logic and consistency not part of his brand.

Comment by Groundhog Day Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:15 pm

  25. If he is not talking any other out of state endorsements he should reject this one.

Comment by DuPage Saint Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:18 pm

  26. The “OK” pic is priceless.

He needs to reject it. How can he accept support from the “liberal media” in Chicago and still claim to be a legit member of the Eastern Bloc

Comment by Hilarious Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:18 pm

  27. ===causes trouble in Springfield (in a good way)==

Like NOT wearing a mask indoors during the middle of a pandemic? That’s squaresville.

Comment by Jocko Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:18 pm

  28. He absolutely should reject it - By golly he needs to show everyone that Clay County and his district have no truck with anything north of Springfield. Then he can whine some more about how southern IL is ignored.
To be honest, I seriously thought this was a joke when I saw the rumblings about in Twitter. Seems to happen with the Trib a good bit these days.

Comment by DownSouth Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:21 pm

  29. On the other hand…Yes …if Bailey wants to be… outa sight.

Comment by Dotnonymous Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:23 pm

  30. – the “liberal media” in Chicago — unintended or intentional /s? Things are getting confusing.

Voted “no.” Maybe the Tribune’s thinking of re-locating to the Eastern Bloc.

Comment by dbk Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:25 pm

  31. Groovy politicians always chill out and are accepting of everyone. Love and peace, man.

    Comment by Louis G Atsaves Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:28 pm

  32. “I condemn the endorsement of the cowardly liberal media and don’t believe anyone who shouldn’t be in Illinois should tell the voters of my district how to vote!” Rep. Beetle Bailey replied.

Comment by The Real Captain Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:30 pm

  33. Yes.
Why would he accept an endorsement from an out of state media outlet?

    Comment by Leigh John-Ella Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:30 pm

  34. Of course he should reject it. He rejects everything else from Chicago. Oh, wait . . . he doesn’t reject our tax money. Never mind.

Comment by JoanP Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:31 pm

  35. Yes, he needs to stay on brand man. He should even sue them over it.

Comment by OneMan Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:33 pm

  36. ===Maybe the Tribune’s thinking of re-locating to the Eastern Bloc===

They’ve been there in spirit since the hurricane.

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:36 pm

  37. Yes-And I am a member of the Tribune Subscriber’s Northern Bloc, which wants to kick the Editorial Section out of the Tribune

Comment by DEE Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:36 pm

  38. Wait til BlocHeadBailey learns Katrina also backed that guy from Kenya for President a few years back. Yikes

Comment by Annonin' Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:41 pm

  39. Why would a newspaper from another state weigh in on his race? To be fair, I can understand if a St. Louis newspaper endorsed him because New Illinois is closer to that market. But a newspaper in the State of Chicago? That would be like a newspaper in North Dakota weighing in on a suburban Chicago race.

    Comment by Colin O'Scopy Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:48 pm

  40. ===Maybe the Tribune’s thinking of re-locating to the Eastern Bloc===

The edit board already thinks it resides on the giant cross in Effingham.

    Comment by Leigh John-Ella Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 12:58 pm

  41. I wondered in the past why a part-time job of working in the General Assembly qualifies them for a state pension. And obviously some have really abused the system like working for a short time as a teacher and getting a big payout. Agree with the Tribune on the pension, but not sure about the Pritzker deal.

Comment by Top of the State Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 1:08 pm

  42. Yes he should because he does not want to be owned by The Man for anything. He’s a rebel.

Comment by zatoichi Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 1:18 pm

  43. God bless the Chicago Tribune. The last Bastien of freedom in a world of “bloggers.”

Comment by Gravy Bond Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 1:18 pm

  44. At least the Trib still has the courage to make endorsements. Unlike the “Gatehouse Bloc” (i.e., at least the SJ-R) which has decided they will no longer make political endorsements.

Comment by Chatham Resident Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 1:43 pm

  45. Correct me if I’m wrong. Back 10+ years ago, you were invited to sit for interviews for editorial board consideration… so if he went to the interview and they endorsed him as a result, then rejecting it would be kind of bananas… so wait, yes, he should reject the endorsement. Took me a second to reason it all out piece by piece /s

    Comment by I Live Here Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 1:45 pm

  46. Nope, Bailey has nothing to gain with the endorsement. Not sure they sell the Chicago Tribune in Clay County anyway.

Comment by Cardinal Fan Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 2:22 pm

  47. Wait til beetle bailey learns Katrina backed that guy from Delaware for President this year. Yikes

Comment by Huh? Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 2:47 pm

  48. I voted no.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend…. Is their mindset

    Comment by 618er Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 2:55 pm

  49. I, for one, commend the Tribune for attempting to help win over one of Chicago’s most fervent critics. They are, however, whistling past the haystacks and cow pies here.

Comment by PublicServant Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 3:02 pm

  50. And I’d like to invite Kentucky and Indiana to compete on annexation of the counties of all the eastern block members. Cya.

Comment by PublicServant Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 3:04 pm

  51. Chicago Tribune, Effingham Tribune Editorial Board.
