* No more Chicago/STL baseball and our NFL team was not exactly great yesterday. What off-topic stuff are we gonna talk about now? Whatever it is, let’s leave the national politics to other sites for the moment. Keep it local, be polite to each other and, above all, remain calm.

  1. The White Sox made a terrible summer a lot easier to deal with, and I’m ready for pitchers and catchers to report. When we needed it most, baseball stepped up. The Central Divisions did, however, give new meaning to the term “flyover country”.

  2. QOTD: What are you thankful for?

There are lots of things I’m thankful for, but mostly my husband.

Comment by Dog Lover Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 7:46 am

  3. There is a new picture of Lincoln on death bed floating around. Most experts think It is fake. What is the over under on what the Abraham Lincoln Library would pay for it?

Comment by DuPage Saint Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 8:13 am

  4. === Michigan’s===

    Hmm.

    ===Keep it local===

  5. It was a disappointing ending to baseball this year with the quick exit of both teams. But prospects could be bright next year. Glad I didn’t watch almost all of the Bears game yesterday.

Comment by Grandson of Man Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 8:15 am

  6. Hard freeze last night in our neck of Sangamon County. Can’t remember scraping ice off car windows this early in October. And it was ice, not a little frost.

  7. Are we witnessing the epilogue of chain movie theatres?

Comment by PopCultFan Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 8:27 am

  8. So maybe quarterback isn’t the biggest problem with the Bears. Maybe play calling and guys who can’t block and receivers who can’t get open or catch the ball when they do.

Or maybe Foles was doing an impression of Trubisky on Sunday. That awful performance looked all too familiar.

    Comment by 47th Ward Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 8:27 am

  9. There’s reason to be optimistic about the future of the White Sox although like the Cubs I’m not sure Renteria is the manager to get them where they need to be. Too bad because he seems like a good guy. The Cubs on the other hand seem to be headed in the opposite direction with Epstein on the way out and a big roster overhaul inevitable.

Comment by Pundent Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 8:31 am

  10. Holding a team to nineteen points is often enough to win. The Colts invested heavy in offensive linemen, and kept the same crew together for years now. I don’t think their defensive talent is better overall than ours, but they could stuff our offensive line and even move it backwards, and we couldn’t do the same.

Comment by walker Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 8:45 am

  11. NL Central had 4 teams in playoffs. Their record was 1-8 total, Not good.

Comment by Bruce( no not him) Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 8:47 am

  12. After weighing everything Bears in their loss, I’ve come to the conclusion it was the orange jerseys.

Kidding aside, all that Foles brought in spark last week was turned into a flat performance that never really found a rhythm or gear that was building on last week’s heroics.

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 8:50 am

  13. its hunting season, what else matters?

Comment by Todd Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 8:52 am

  14. Let the “we should have gotten Cam Newton” conversation begin

Comment by Red Ranger Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 8:54 am

  15. We got some frost up here in the north last night. Most of the warm-weather veg that is left is unscathed or lightly scathed, which is nice because the rest of the week the lows are supposed to lie firmly in the 40s, hopefully enough time to ripen a few more peppers, beans and squash. Meanwhile I am delighted with the cool-weather veg I’ve planted out over the past few weeks. I can easily keep up with the job of evicting cabbage worms, and other pests are virtually nonexistent.

Comment by yinn Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 9:02 am

  16. Frost here in SW Illinois too. Lived here thirty years and it’s the earliest I remember. However, looks like the plants, even the cannas, might be okay.

Comment by Collinsville Kevin Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 9:09 am

  17. ESPN1000 was talking about Theo’s contract this morning… it’s hard to be a Sox fan and have the top talk about the Cubs everyday. I’m bitter.

Comment by Notorious RBG Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 9:11 am

  18. Time to bring the goldfish inside to their winter digs. It’s the closest thing to fishing I have done in decades. At least the cold makes them move slower.

    Comment by cermak_rd Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 9:14 am

  19. The new Edith Rockefeller McCormick bio is a good read.

  20. Re: Bears. It is called regression to the mean.

Comment by Captain Obvious Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 9:26 am

  21. I keep wondering how Michael Kopech feels now about opting out of the 2020 season which went into the postseason. Sox sure could have used him on the mound. I hope he is OK, that he has resolved some of his issues, and will be raring to go and solid when pitchers and catchers report in a few months for the 2021 season.

Comment by Responsa Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 9:27 am

  22. I thought the Chicago History Museum had the Lincoln Death Bed.

Comment by OneMan Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 9:29 am

  23. There was even some light frost on the grass in the park near me about a mile from the lake in Chicago, which is pretty crazy this time of year.

Go back to last Monday’s Bears/open thread and you’ll see I was one of the few who didn’t agree with pulling Mitch at that time. What we saw yesterday is pretty much what we’re going to get with Foles as long as he’s in there. Which, may not be long because of his penchant for getting hurt

Comment by Joe Bidenopolous Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 9:30 am

  24. the Sox record over the Cubs record. Sox took it to 3 games in the playoffs vs 2 for the Cubs and got many more runs vs. the Cubs 1. talk about that ESPN 1000.

Comment by Amalia Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 9:34 am

  25. Maybe the Bears just played the best defense in the league?.. I wouldn’t say the sky is falling, yet.

But I think DuPage Saint means the “new picture”, not the actual bed: https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-ugly-battle-over-an-alleged-abraham-lincoln-deathbed-photo

Comment by JoanP Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 9:46 am

  27. I think if someone had set up a camera in the room where Lincoln died we would have heard of it before now.

    Comment by Cheryl44 Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 9:54 am

  28. I was saddened to learn that Bob Gibson passed. I have fond memories of listening to Cardinals radio broadcasts as a youth, speaker next to my ear, as Gibson battled his opponents. His record of shutouts and low ERA were amazing. He was a competitor. Even his Cardinal road roommate Bill White, when traded to another team, and when first facing Gibson as an opposing pitcher, found the ball heading for his head. The opponent was the opponent. God broke the mold after making Big Bob.

Comment by Diogenes in DuPage Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 9:57 am

  29. We haven’t had a decent rain in several weeks in south-central Illinois. It’s abnormally dry in more than half the state. Hope we have a wet winter or we may be looking at drought conditions.

  32. I llinI basketball team should be very good this season.

Comment by Cook street Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 11:32 am

  33. Bears: They played a better team, and got beaten. Foles is the least of their problems; look what he pulled off almost at the end of the game, when the rest of the team apparently woke up and realized they were losing. Weather: no frost yet, but had to fire up the furnace 2 days ago to beat the chill until the alleged warmup Tuesday. Politics: The dumpster fire continues….Covid: See politics comment. 2020: Meh.

  34. I feel like Pace doesn’t get enough heat. Last year O line play and the TE position were a problem. Yesterday we saw O line play and TE position be a problem. Pace didn’t do all that much to address these problem areas in the offseason.

Trubisky wasn’t the only problem on this offense.

Comment by ChicagoVinny Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 1:13 pm

  35. It was interesting that Gibson began his life in Omaha in poverty, and died there as a Hall of Famer. No pitch count in his days, and his work ethic on the field was admirable. The Cardinal Nation will miss “Gibby”.

Comment by Top of the State Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 1:13 pm

  36. United and other airline employees are in grim times. Furloughs turned into layoffs. Goodbye healthcare.

My biggest complaint about Trubisky was always the draft choices given up to get him. We have missed that added talent for years and still do.

Comment by Last Bull Moose Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 1:36 pm

  37. When I was a kid the only reason we ever had to go to enemy territory AKA Wrigley (Sox fan) was to see Gibson pitch. It was something to see, he was fantastic

Comment by Teddy Salad Monday, Oct 5, 20 @ 1:57 pm

  38. Was blessed to see ‘Gibby’ pitch several times. He was the greatest athlete Of all time. Regardless of sport.

  39. Roger Goodell is threatening forfeits if NFL teams violate COVID-19 protocols. I say go for it:
