The Lake County Health Department is warning residents of several COVID-19 cases linked to adult volleyball leagues that competed in Gages Lake this month.
According to health officials, at least 14 people, who played or watched volleyball at Jesse Oaks Food and Drink in Gages Lake in September, tested positive for COVID-19.
“Of these cases, multiple people reported that they also played volleyball at other bar/restaurant locations, which could contribute to further spread of the virus,” Lake County officials said.
The facility is indoors.
“We are currently working diligently to speak with infected individuals and notify close contacts who have been identified,” said Dr. Sana Ahmed, medical epidemiologist at the Lake County Health Department. “However, nearly 200 volleyball players and spectators may have been exposed. This could potentially be a large outbreak, and we need the public’s help to contain the spread of this virus.”
Health officials are asking that anyone who played volleyball at Jesse Oaks this month, or visited and did not wear a mask, to quarantine at home for 14 days from their last visit.

[Larry Mackey, director of environmental health at the county health department] said there is “some disagreement” as to whether the games taking place at Jesse Oaks were in violation of state guidelines, but the health department believes they were league games and therefore prohibited.
However, he said, no enforcement action are being taken against the establishment.
“They voluntarily agreed to stop the games for 14 days and we’re working with them to meet the guidelines,” Mackey added.

In a past life I lived and worked in Lake County. I can confirm. Half of my coworkers lived for their volleyball/drinking league.

I had a very enjoyable summer one year playing in a bar volleyball league on the Chain o Lakes. There was even a charity “beer in hand” game where you had to keep a certain amount of beer in your cup at all times and only play one handed. Oh to be young again…

Peruse the public statements of the Lake County Sheriff over the past 6 months if you want some input into the state of enforcement actions in Lake County.
What baffles me to no end is why the state is sitting idle with enforcement in the face of a once in a century pandemic.
As it stands now, there are places I will never invest in a business - any county where the sheriff openly states he is picking and choosing which laws to follow is one of the main litmus tests.
One way or the other some businesses aren’t going to be around when this is all said and done. There’s no reason to also needlessly increase the number of people who won’t be around too.

If you can get COVID from volleyball, a non contact sport, imagine what would happen if you played football with someone who had it when you have dozens of bodies smashing together every play.

Three Dimensional–It’s quite possible–maybe probable–that the transmission took place during the “drinking” rather than the volleyball. This would explain why college football teams have covid problems when high school teams do not–far more bar attendance among college age players.

Yup, nothing like practicing social distancing, mask wearing, and other steps to stop the spread of Covid 19 at non-essential adult volleyball games. Guess what?? Covid won the game AGAIN. Maybe now they’ll start thinking BEFORE they do dumb things.

What I was saying was, it could be that the bars afterward are the problem, and not the volleyball. In fact, it’s my guess that the “bars” are the problem.
