  1. Dallas Keuchel on Renteria’s decision to pitch Carlos Rodon in a bases loaded, late inning jam last night: “We’re starters for a reason. There’s bullpen guys for a reason.”

Didn’t think it was possible for Ricky to make a worse managerial move than batting Nicky Delmonico clean up. Keuchel’s quote makes you wonder if he lost the team last night.

  3. Nothing like watching to baseball teams that clinched playoff spots utterly fail. I derogatorily predicted Mazara would be a left-handed Avi Garcia. I wish he was even close to being that good.

Meh. Get the swoon out of their systems before the playoffs, is my thinking.

===Didn’t think it was possible for Ricky to make a worse managerial move===

Let’s hope he learns from this. Managers can get all Einsteiny once they clinch playoff spots. Maybe the humiliation will be good for him.

  5. I’ve been a Cubs fan for 45 years and don’t believe I’ve ever seen a team hitting slump like the current one. Good grief. At this rate I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sox pitched three no hitters this weekend.

  6. ===Get the swoon out of their systems before the playoffs, is my thinking.===

There have actually been academic studies on this. A UC Berkeley paper indicates that performance against good teams within the regular season, rather than performance against all teams in September, is a better indicator of post-season success.

  7. This being 2020, perhaps the Cubs and Sox will both pitch simultaneous no hitters this weekend, with the game decided in the 10th inning when a Bill Buckner style ground ball allows the man on 2nd to score.

  8. ==and don’t believe I’ve ever seen a team hitting slump like the current one==

‘18 and especially ‘19 with the 9 game losing streak to end the season were both pretty bad too, but yeah. 10 runs in the last six games with 5 of them coming in one…not great. Was hoping for a longer run than the first week of October. I guess we’ll see

  9. The best thing in Chicago sports this week is the hiring of Billy Donovan. Glad to see the Bulls opened the pocketbook.

  10. Watched Yadier Molina get his 2,000th hit in an empty stadium last night. Should have had at least a 10-minute standing O. What a let-down…

It’s happened before once in the big leagues, and it happened at Weegham Park (now Wrigley) in 1917. Cubs and Reds had simultaneous no-hitters thru the 9th. The winning run in the 10th was on a ball hit by the Reds’ Jim Thorpe back to the Cubs’ pitcher Hippo Vaughn, who inexplicably threw home instead of to first for the 3rd out, and the runner was safe at the plate. Cubs went scoreless at the bottom of the frame and lost the game.
