To be clear, those Foxx numbers were from a poll of Lipinski’s district

Posted in:

* At first or even second or possibly third glance, you might think that these Foxx/O’Brien poll results are countywide

A new Ogden & Fry poll commissioned by the Cook County Republican Party shows Joe Biden clobbering Donald Trump but has Republican Pat O’Brien edging Kim Foxx in the Cook County State’s Attorney Race and Marie Newman in a tight race in the 3rd Congressional District.

Asked if the election were held today, O’Brien received 57.9 percent to Foxx’s 30.7 percent (“other candidate” or undecided garnered 11.4 percent).

But if you believed that this was a countywide poll, you would be wrong. Here’s the polling memo’s headline

IL Congressional District 3

The last census showed that CD3’s voting age population was only 4.54 percent Black. Now, to be clear, getting clobbered by 18 points in Lipinski’s district is definitely not a good thing for Foxx, but the district is not representative of the county as a whole.

* And this is an email I received from the Cook County GOP last week…

Cook County Republican Party Chairman Sean M. Morrison commissioned the polling firm Ogden & Fry to conduct a county-wide poll on the race for Cook County State’s Attorney featuring embattled Democrat incumbent Kim Foxx versus GOP challenger Judge Pat O’Brien.

The results of the Ogden & Fry poll shows Judge O’Brien has significantly closed the gap over the last 8 weeks with Foxx’s numbers falling below 50%.

The Ogden & Fry poll spoke with 447 Likely Voters with the margin of error for the poll is +/- 3.77% at the 95% confidence interval. The poll was conducted on September 5, 2020.

Also, it’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg, not Ginsberg.

  1. Ugh another, trying to be first and quick rather than thorough and correct.

  5. watched the Sun Times session on State’s Attorney. surprised that O’Brien was a weak speaker. kinda snide mouselike and clearly reading lots of his answers. also surprised that Foxx seems to have toned down her ego and made herself more relatable. she gave strong answers even when I disagreed with the answer.

  6. Foxx is going to win, but it will be interesting to see how many Biden voters crossover to O’Brien.

  7. Preckwinkle didn’t do Foxx any favors by going after Judge Toomin. Foxx has a lot of negatives and Preckwinkle just added to them. Maybe, people who don’t like Preckwinkle will take it out on Foxx.

  8. I’m sure Newman will win fairly comfortably but found it interesting to see on social media that she’s knocking on doors. Not something most Democrats are doing in the pandemic. I think she either thinks the race is closer than she wants or just loves the attention she gets campaigning in person. The latter is consistent with everything I’ve seen and observed from her.

  9. The state’s attorney’s race is a big missed opportunity for the Illinois GOP. The party of Thompson-Edgar-Ryan would have seen the opportunity for a pick up here. They would have recruited a female ex-prosecutor from a big downtown firm who could raise money and draw support from suburban swing voters and female voters in the city who are alarmed by this summer’s spike in crime. Instead, their nominee is an old school Irish guy who is playing to the FOP. A Republican can’t win in Cook without a huge number of Dem crossover votes and I don’t see O’Brien pulling that off. Maybe no one can pull it off anymore, but a functioning Illinois Republican Party would have been all over this. The CCSAO used to be a primary focus. Now they just preach to the choir on twitter and in John Kass’ column.

  11. @Miso, the third candidate is named Brian Dennehy.

  12. Roman - there was a time when the GOP could find and nominate a credible CCSAO candidate. Indeed, the GOP won in 1972, 1976, 1990 and 1992 by doing this. Those days are long, long gone. I am about as loyal a Democrat as you can find and I will not be voting for Kim Foxx but I don’t think there are as many people like me out there as 28 years ago.
