The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today announced 2,208 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 24 additional confirmed deaths.
- Cook County: 1 male 30s, 2 males 40s, 2 female 60s, 1 male 60s, 1 female 70s, 1 male 70s,1 female 80s
- DuPage County: 1 male 50s
- Iroquois County: 1 male 80s
- Knox County: 1 female 80s
- Lake County: 1 male 70s, 1 female 80s
- LaSalle County: 1 female 70s
- Macon County: 1 female 80s
- Madison County: 1 male 60s, 1 female 90s
- Mason County: 1 male 50s
- Perry County: 1 male 90s
- Rock Island County: 1 female 80s
- Sangamon County: 1 female 90s
- Will County: 1 male 60s
- Williamson County: 1 male 70sCurrently, IDPH is reporting a total of 215,929 cases, including 7,857 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 51,736 specimens for a total of 3,592,919. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from August 14 – August 20 is 4.3%. As of last night, 1,526 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 351 patients were in the ICU and 121 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.
Following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, IDPH is now reporting both confirmed and probable cases and deaths on its website. Reporting probable cases will help show the potential burden of COVID-19 illness and efficacy of population-based non-pharmaceutical interventions. IDPH will update these data once a week.
*All data are provisional and will change. In order to rapidly report COVID-19 information to the public, data are being reported in real-time. Information is constantly being entered into an electronic system and the number of cases and deaths can change as additional information is gathered. That statewide positivity rate is going to keep trending downwards; U of I students/faculty/staff are counted in those numbers and they’re doing 10,000 tests/day.

To IDPH: Instead of reporting the ages of the people who died by county, start reporting the ages of the people who have tested positive for COVID-19 by county.
Reporting the ages of people who died serves no purpose, and it makes the younger people think they have nothing to worry about since the 99% of the people dying are very old.

Unless those that test positive keep getting tested multiple times until they show negative. Then it will have an opposite effect.

Actually I disagree. Seeing the 30 and 40 year olds that have died from Covid have convinced this person at least to keep social distancing. It has also reminded me how much life (as in years of life) have been snuffed out, not just for those younger folks but for the older folks as well. Depriving someone who would have died at 95 of 5 years is a pretty awful deprivation too.

I agree with Donnie Elgin. The young people in my life are not convinced by Covid statistics that the threat of the virus is worth sacrifices. The number of 30 and 40 year olds who have died isn’t much different than seasonal influenza. Also, the data doesn’t say much else about these people and we are led to believe that the young Covid deaths are the result of one or more serious pre-existing conditions.

The philosophy of the Public Health Director for DeWitt- Piatt:
“As the public begins to return to normal routines, Remmert encourages individuals who do not feel it is safe to go out, to stay in.”
He’s getting tired of having the public call him about mask violations. These two sound bites are worth a listen. DeWitt County just had their first reported death with possible COVID-19 related issues. But Remmert wanted to challenge that because the 80ish man had fallen a month ago and hurt his head. He was hospitalized and a COVID-19 test was done that came back positive before he died. Instead of passing the blame around, Remmert needs to step up. Telling people that to stay in if they are afraid is hardly what should be expected from a public health official.
