* I’ve been hearing all day that the governor’s “Fair Tax” TV ad blitz is finally starting soon. Well, Comcast’s latest political issue buy report is out and Vote Yes For Fairness has purchased $75K over five days starting tomorrow. Click here.
I gotta figure that broadcast TV will also be announced and that the $75K is a drop in the bucket. Pritzker deposited $51.5 million into the Vote Yes For Fairness account in June.
We’ll have to see what the other side does and when. There are those who believe that waiting to go up on the air has been a mistake. But, again, we’ll see.
*** UPDATE *** The Illinois Opportunity Project has contributed $300,000 to a committee called Say No to More Taxes, which the IOP appears to control. The IOP was co-founded by Dan Proft, who has since moved on to a full-time radio career.

Very much looking forward to the ads. There’s great joy in trying to sell something of value like the graduated income tax, where there is belief in the product and forthrightness in trying to sell it. There is no need to make stuff up like the anti-tax people do, that it will crush the middle class, workers and small businesses. Fair Tax proponents are upfront in that they want more money for the budget, higher ed, social services, paying bills, etc.
The Fair Tax campaign is starting right at the time that the Democratic presidential ticket begins campaigning, and whatever excitement is generated by the convention. Hopefully the tax campaign goes well also with VBM.

So will this be a new ad? I’ve seen a couple variations of one the past two weeks. Personally I think the one I’ve seen could use some improvement.

Think there was one on WGN TV this morning.
Yeah, it’s the top 3% now, but that isn’t in the amendment or anything so that can become the top 5% fairly quickly.
Does anyone really think it is going to stay at the top 3%?
Also, the ad I heard was a bit misleading since it said if ‘you make 250,000 or more’ isn’t if you and your partner make more than 250,000 combined?

Highly doubt it. This will be a close vote. We’re still not sure if the threshold will be 60% or 50%.

I wouldn’t be so sure. The millionaire’s tax referendum a few years ago got 2/3 approval, and there wasn’t even any advertising prior to that. Granted, “millionaire tax” wording probably generates a more visceral reaction than “fair tax”, but this is still an overwhelmingly blue state. Turnout will be sky-high because trump, it wouldn’t shock me if this passes by a wide margin

It’s not.
The Republican options have be usurped by either ridiculous far right silly folk or Raunerites who are now Trumpkins, most unsure what they stand for outside being appealing to old angry white men. With respect.
Right now, it’s got a 3 in 7 chance in passing. They wasted a whole summer sitting on $50+ million when reminding unemployed voters worried about rent or a mortgage might be people they’d like to try to make a pitch to in ads.

Political will on this is going to be much easier to find when it is ‘only another 2~4% of the population’ and ‘hey it is only another 1%~2% of those families making 250K or more’ or ‘let us move the highest rate limits down’ it’s still the 3% who are paying.
JB (like virtually every other governor besides Bruce) wants to do things. To do something, you need more revenue.
As Rich pointed out yesterday, one of the keys to keeping the job as governor is keeping state workers happy, and you do that with raises (along with other things), and to do that, you need revenue.

Beginning in 2021, the GA will be focused on the new map and what their new constituents might see in raising the rate so quickly. Pritzker signing the change going into the last two years before his team-elect? That’s doubtful.
So 2023, first term in a new district, 2024, re-election in a new district… maybe in 2025… you may find some will and political cover to tinker with the rates.
That’s 5 years… maybe.

You think, politically, it makes sense to allow an opponent to link state workers’ raises to a change in income tax rates?
