Second member of state party central committee calls on Madigan to resign

Posted in:

* Sen. Iris Martinez was the first…

Speaker Madigan should resign leadership posts. IL Dems bigger than one person. @DemsforIl has excellent, diverse leaders for victory w/out distractions. We win when we stand for something bigger than ourselves. Not one individual.

  1. As a Pot, I call on this Kettle to resign…

Comment by High Socks Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 12:33 pm

  2. That last sentence is what the Democrat Party used to stand for. Good for them, you don’t have to convict the guy or disrespect his work for the past 40 years to understand him not stepping down is going to hurt the party and state.

Comment by the Patriot Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 12:35 pm

  3. You can’t lecture the Democratic Party when you type…

    === Democrat Party===

It reads like you’re petty and small.

    To the post,

I’m not a Dem, they need to figure this out.

The political side makes these “ones and twos” less impressive, the move it’s 6 or 7 or a majority of the caucus, state central committee, etc.

It’s on the record, isn’t the goal of the exercise to move towards the end, resignation?

It’s their party, but there’s a better way.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 12:42 pm

  4. =him not stepping down is going to hurt the party and state.=

Your concern for the party is touching given your leanings. I would say they could have benefited from your advice in 2018 but they seem to have done ok. I don’t suppose your view extends to national politics and corruption?

Comment by Pundent Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 12:55 pm

  5. My pie-in-the-sky hope is that the next speaker and party chair are not the same person…it’s time for the speaker to focus only on their job and leading/electing their caucus, and the state party to focus on more than just house races (including strengthening local party leadership and infrastructure).

Comment by NIU Grad Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 12:55 pm

  6. === My pie-in-the-sky hope is that the next speaker and party chair are not the same person ===

Its a pretty good bet since the only State Rep. on the State Central Committee is Speaker Madigan.

Comment by Powdered Whig Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 1:00 pm

  7. I’m vaguely impressed with her political skills, that Carol Ronen’s reputation has survived her 38K pension scam she negotiated while she was still defending Blagojevich almost until the dam broke.

Comment by ZC Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 1:13 pm

  8. Actually, Democrat party is correct. When there are a bunch of them together but properly socially distanced, we call them Democrats, not Democratics. Use the google.

Comment by Captain Obvious Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 1:20 pm

  9. - Captain Obvious -

And yet Democrats… see it as disparaging.

You should talk to one or two. Might be enlightening.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 1:23 pm

  10. === Democrat Party is an epithet for the Democratic Party of the United States, used in a disparaging fashion by the party’s opponents. While the term has been used in a non-hostile way, it has grown in its negative use since the 1940s, in particular by members of the Republican Party—in party platforms, partisan speeches, and press releases—as well as by conservative commentators===

    So there’s that.

    (Sigh)

    To the post,

Is there enough weighted vote to remove Madigan from the party chairmanship?

You’d think if they could get it, it should go down and move on, same with House Dems as Speaker.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 1:28 pm

  11. Captain, it’s obvious you can’t tell the difference between a noun and an adjective. You’ve flunked 4th grade grammar.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 1:30 pm

  12. ===The political side makes these “ones and twos” less impressive===

Movements usually start by ones and twos when they’re organic. I agree the drip, drip, drip is certainly not very impressive. It is also a terrible media strategy. I think it is an indicator that no one has made any effort to step forward to specifically lead or coordinate an organized effort. I could see that rather than take a stand that presents a risk that they hope it would be resolved by Madigan himself or by someone else taking a stand.

===I’m not a Dem, they need to figure this out.===

I am a Democrat but it’s not like anyone is really asking us either. When was the last time the Democratic Party of Illinois held a convention?

That’s not snark. I don’t know the answer and haven’t been able to find a source that knows the answer.

Comment by Candy Dogood Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 1:30 pm

  13. Willy, the Publican Party does not need your lecturing ;)

To the post, drip… drip… drip…. Will it be enough to fill a bucket? Madigan is per usual playing the long game. If everyone is going to drag their feet for months to say that he should resign, he will win.

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 1:31 pm

  14. === Movements usually start by ones and twos when they’re organic===

There only a handful on this committee. Not dozens. Counting noses for this isn’t tough. Respectfully. We’ll see. Your party will need to sort it out one way or another it seems, to the purely political.

    - Ducky LaMoore -

That made me laugh aloud. Good stuff.

    :)

  15. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 1:28 pm:

English grammar is tough. Start throwing in words that carry over grammar rules from their original language and it gets tougher.

The Democratic Party is made up of Democrats.

The Republican Party is made up of Republicans.

Though used disparagingly and intentionally so by folks that know better, people that are bad at grammar or the roots of English grammar don’t necessarily see the difference because we don’t call Republicans “Republics.”

I have met folks that sincerely use the term “Democrat Party” because they think the grammar makes sense but don’t realize a “Democrat Party” means a different thing than a “Democratic Party.”

Comment by Candy Dogood Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 1:41 pm

  16. The stock answer should be: “If Madigan is indicted he should resign, but I will not call for his resignation until that happens. We have far bigger issues to which we must attend. Next.”

Comment by Grandson of Man Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 1:42 pm

  17. ===Your party will need to sort it out one way or another it seems, to the purely political.===

I hope they ask me and maybe a couple thousand other delegates.

Comment by Candy Dogood Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 1:45 pm

  18. Okay Carol, you can go back to feeding at the public trough now.

Comment by Marine Life Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 1:48 pm

  19. =It’s on the record, isn’t the goal of the exercise to move towards the end, resignation?=

And therein lies the problem. Other than Rep. Ford we’ve got a small number of individuals, mostly women, who are calling for Madigan to step down. The fence sitters are going to have to take a position at some point. Of course they could try to get ahead of this and say that if Madigan is indicted he must go but up until then it’s business as usual. Not saying that’s the best move but it may be better than ducking microphones.

Comment by Pundent Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 2:16 pm

  20. - Pundent -

First, as a premise, I’ve said since July 17th, Madigan should resign.

To your solid thoughts, I’ve felt the Arroyo Rule is the “correct answer” for legislators, especially for those not asking or demanding resignation. It’s the cover Madigan himself created, and indictment before trial still is well before “innocent until proven”

To the politics, the party, that I’m not a member, will need to sort out the politics and what is the line, and can they count noses to move Madigan.

As an outsider, I find it interesting that the Dem state central committee has stayed so quiet, and someone like Ronen didn’t wait to make it larger than her own name.

    We’ll see I guess.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 2:22 pm

  21. Going a little off-topic here, back in 2016 a large number of posters here wouldn’t have figured there would be an Auditor General Mautino in 2020.

Comment by Six Degrees of Separation Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 2:25 pm

  22. To. The Freaking. Post. Yes, Carol. Good comment.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 2:29 pm

  23. OK, Rich. Can we admit that all these statements from random people are directly tied to Kelly Cassidy? It’s so painfully obvious.

Comment by Gary Hart Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 2:49 pm

  24. === Can we admit that all these statements from random people are directly tied to Kelly Cassidy? It’s so painfully obvious. ===

    BINGO

Comment by Powdered Whig Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 2:55 pm

  25. ===random people===

I have no proof. But a member of the state central committee is definitely not a random person.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 3:00 pm

  26. Rich, come on my friend. Carol is from the 9th Congressional District and…wait for it…so is Kelly. It’s kinda obvious…Like freaking Yoni Pizer would even know how to ever get a press release out…

Comment by Gary Hart Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 3:13 pm

  27. What’s your point, Gary Hart? That Kelly Cassidy is a leader who wants change in Springfield and is working to get it? You seem to suggest that that’s a bad thing.

Comment by Southern Skeptic Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 3:18 pm

  28. Kelly Cassidy should not throw rocks and live in a glass house. As a legislator, she has been directly involved in cannabis legislation. Now, her spouse has a high paying job in the cannabis industry. Even back in May, Kelly Cassidy was supporting legislation to help the cannabis industry. The Cannabis industry is probably her ComEd.

  29. 47th- Democrat is a noun. Person, place or thing. A name is a noun. As in Democrat party. A party made up of Democrats. An adjective describes a noun. Democratic country. If Democrats are insulted by the term Democrat party, well maybe they shouldn’t have picked that name.

Comment by Captain Obvious Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 3:44 pm

  30. Agree with Amalia, Good comment by State Dem. Committee Member Carol Ronen.

Comment by Backtothe Future Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 3:48 pm

  31. === A party made up of Democrats===

That makes it an adjective. Yikes, man, stop… and turn off the Rush Limbaugh for 13 minutes.

===… used in a disparaging fashion by the party’s opponents. While the term has been used in a non-hostile way, it has grown in its negative use since the 1940s, in particular by members of the Republican Party===

Unless you’re from the 1930s, or utterly ignorant to uses of words… then I can see how this confuses you.

  32. ====Actually, Democrat party is correct. When there are a bunch of them together but properly socially distanced, we call them Democrats, not Democratics. Use the google.

47th Ward pointed this out, but

Democrat is a noun so when referring to a group of people who are a member of the party it is plural Democrats.

Democratic proper adjective to Party. You don’t say Britian food, you say British food.

The England language is your friend.

Comment by ArchPundit Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 3:59 pm

  33. Nouns do not modify nouns. Go back to 4th grade and this time pay attention.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 4:00 pm

  34. Can we stop with the grammar and conspiracy arguments please.

Comment by walker Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 4:04 pm

  35. Walker, with respect, calling it the “Democrat Party” is an insult to Democrats. You may not be offended, but I am and I’m not going to accept that kind of disrespect from anyone commenting on what is supposed to be a civil format for give and take.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 4:10 pm

  36. Is Kelly Cassidy the US Attorney too?

Comment by ArchPundit Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 4:10 pm

Don’t forget it is an insult to the England speakers.

  38. ===and I’m not going===

He’s been put into moderation for a while. Move along.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 4:12 pm

  39. We all know how close Rich is to Cassidy. So he will moderate this discussion to protect her. It’s ridiculous.

Comment by Gary Hart Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 4:31 pm

  40. Senator Ronen is saying he’s a big distraction for Dems this fall—and he absolutely is. It’s time for him to move along and it’s brave of her to say it.

    Comment by Louise’s Brother Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 5:23 pm

  41. Madigan will be hard pressed to be re-elected to the central committee next time he is up for election.

Comment by "Old Timer Dem" Thursday, Aug 6, 20 @ 7:03 pm

  42. Didn’t Ms. Ronen have then Gov Rod put her in a position so she could bump her pension?

Didn’t Kelly Cassidy pass legislation that directly benefited her spouse?

    Glass meet house.
