*** UPDATED x1 - Progressive aldermen chime in *** Democratic state Rep. LaPointe on Madigan: “I think he should resign”

Democratic state Rep. Lindsey LaPointe this week has thrown in with the brave band of rebels in her party calling for Michael Madigan to step down from his role as Illinois House speaker and state Democratic Party chair.

“I’m not really interested in issuing a press release or making a big announcement, but yes, I think he should resign,” LaPointe told me in a phone interview. “That’s what I’m prepared to say on the record.”

*** UPDATE *** Press release…

The following is a joint statement from Ald. Matt Martin (47th), Ald. Andre Vasquez (40th), Ald. Maria Hadden (49th), Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez (25th), Ald. Rossana Rodriguez Sanchez (33rd) and Ald. Daniel La Spata (1st):

“As progressive leaders on the Chicago City Council, we feel strongly that our current circumstances require a change in leadership. Speaker Madigan’s entanglements in multiple scandals cast a pall of corruption at a time when we must be focused on protecting working families, seniors and students. He should do what is best for the state and step down from his roles as Speaker of the House and Chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois.”

  1. The Fair Tax is more important than Mike Madigan

  2. Typically when I see an article lately about Madigqn and what he was suspected of doing and whether or not he should resign most comments contain a tremendous amount of snark. But here is a serious question, are there 1 or 2 lawmakers in the legislature now that if they said he should step down, resign or whatever then you would know that something serious is about to happen. It seems like whoever has asked him to step down already individually may not really have much of an impact at all on what he does. Or, is there anybody else in the legislature that is no where near him in terms of power or influence that it wouldn’t matter what they said? I’ll hang up and listen…

  4. As a Republican Against Trump (RAT), I was ready to vote straight Dem. But if my reps do not say at least what she said, I have no clue what to do. I’m sorry but this scandal is a trump equal in my mind.

  5. “this scandal is a trump equal”

The corruption that Madigan has been accused of these past few years is small potatoes compared to what tramp has done in the past three years.

  6. If Madigan loves his State and party more than power, he will resign as Speaker.

Ditto for Trump, but Madigan is a patriot and might act. Trump is not and won’t.

  7. Maybe we should start a Capfax reader’s pool to predict who will be next. Or even better, maybe BetRivers can set a line.

I’d take Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz. Would probably pay like 5 to 1.

  8. Trump is to Madigan as Machiavelli is to Robin Hood.

  9. JGG next - yes. I’d put $20 on that.

On an offshore account since the doofus administration canceled the online registration without having to go to the physical location. The state is losing millions to offshore online accounts, but they haven’t learned anything. Dumb.

  10. Zorn’s term “If Troop” is really funny. Even though I think the “Ifs” are smarter.

It comes down to this, IMHO.

  14. Too bad Tribbies cut Zorn’s explanation of a “why” to make room for more witty writing.
