1,772 new cases, 18 additional deaths, 3.8 percent positivity rate

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today announced 1,772 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 18 additional confirmed deaths.

- Champaign County: 1 female 90s
- Cook County: 1 male 50s, 1 male 60s, 1 female 70s, 2 males 70s, 1 female 80s, 2 males 80s
- DeKalb County: 1 female 80s, 1 female 90s
- DuPage County: 1 male 80s
- Kane County: 1 female 70s
- Kankakee County: 1 male 60s
- Lake County:1 male 80s
- Macon County: 1 male 50s
- Madison County: 1 male 60s
- Winnebago County: 1 male 80s

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 176,896 cases, including 7,478 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 41,134 specimens for a total of 2,649,786. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from July 23 –July 29 is 3.8%. As of last night, 1,452 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 353 patients were in the ICU and 149 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

Following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, IDPH is now reporting both confirmed and probable cases and deaths on its website. Reporting probable cases will help show the potential burden of COVID-19 illness and efficacy of population-based non-pharmaceutical interventions. IDPH will update these data once a week.

Following the new regional covid-19 resurgence website, it’s remarkable how Metro East keeps coming in -right- under 8% positivity, day after day. Maybe today’s the day, they finally hit the threshold.

I’d like to point out that the positivity rates don’t add up if you compare the overall state rate against the 11 regional rates. Only one region, Region 6, has a rate below 3.8%. Every other region is between 4% - 8%. If the regional rates are correct, there is no way the state rate can be 3.8%. I know the days are not necessarily apples to apples, but there haven’t been dramatic shifts between days considering it is a 7 day average.

Today’s number is 4.3 but rolling average is 3.8. Not liking upward numbers as this will eventually increase rolling average. Sad. Won’t improve until everyone takes seriously. Stopped for food and 5 people walked into carryout: no masks, one spitting on ground before entering. Thank goodness I was leaving at that moment.

What Could Cause a Region to Become More Restrictive?
Sustained increase in 7-day rolling average (7 out of 10 days) in the positivity rate
AND ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
Sustained 7-day increase in hospital admissions for a COVID-19 like illness
Reduction in hospital capacity threatening surge capabilities (ICU capacity or medical/surgical beds under 20%)
Three consecutive days averaging greater than or equal to 8% positivity rate (7 day rolling)

any of these could retrigger a rollback, but my gut tells me there won’t be unless its initiated on the very local level.

I suspect a rollback is coming because, strangely, it’s the path of least resistance. The governor/legislator/local leaders are unwilling to do the kind of enforcement of mask mandates necessary to make the people not taking this seriously grudgingly comply. At this point their preaching is about as effective as asking speeders on the interstate to drive the limit.

Gov said at press conference today 7 days of increase hospitalization would kick in a rollback as well.
LaSalle has had three days of hospitalization increases. And 7 days of positive test increase.

Somewhere around 30-35,000 new cases since Phase IV began. I don’t care if the positivety rate is 100% or .001%, that’s a lot of new cases in about a month.

I would just resume the statewide bar closures and limits on indoor dining immediately. Regardless of regional numbers.
