The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today announced 1,076 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 30 additional confirmed deaths.

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 173,731 cases, including 7,446 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 28,331 specimens for a total of 2,570,465. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from July 21 –July 27 is 3.8%. As of last night, 1,383 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 329 patients were in the ICU and 128 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

Following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, IDPH is now reporting both confirmed and probable cases and deaths on its website. Reporting probable cases will help show the potential burden of COVID-19 illness and efficacy of population-based non-pharmaceutical interventions. IDPH will update these data once a week.

* On to Jackson County…

Health departments across Southern Illinois are seeing an upswing in COVID-19 cases.

The number of new cases was so high in Jackson County, it prompted the health department to issue a public health alert on Sunday.

“We have had a definite upswing in the number of cases,” Bart Hagston, administrator of Jackson County Health Department, said. “The number of cases eclipsed the previous record number three times in the past week, and that’s not the way we want the data to trend.” […]

Hagston said the health alert focused on residents in their teens and 20s because those age groups represent 70% of the new cases in the county during July. Of 212 new cases in the county in July, 148 are from people in their teens and 20s.

Beginning Friday, July 31, anyone traveling to Chicago from Wisconsin, Missouri, North Dakota, and Nebraska will have to self-quarantine for 14 days. The city said it will update the list of affected states every Tuesday - adding or removing states depending on the latest data, and will go in effect the following Friday. […]

There are currently 22 states covered by the travel order, which took effect July 6, including:

The order doesn’t apply to professional sports teams and nobody has yet been fined for violating it.

Illinois was one of three states added to New York, New Jersey and Connecticut’s joint list of states requiring travelers to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday.

The State of Illinois has worked to flatten the curve and bend it downward and our statewide positivity rate remains one of the lowest in the Midwest. But, Illinois is surrounded by states with less restrictions and higher rates of transmission illustrating, once again, the need for a nationwide response. The Governor supports states that are implementing mitigation strategies to keep people healthy and safe and urges Illinois residents who are traveling to follow three Ws: wear a face covering, watch your distance and wash your hands.

  2. There’s a sort of consistency to how each day of the week relates to the other days. Sun-Mon-Tues tend to be our low days. I always look at the week prior. Sunday was pretty alarmingly high compared to the previous couple Sundays. Tuesday, while the lowest in a week, is higher than last Tuesday, which was last weeks lowest in a week, and higher than the Tuesday before that.

  7. Clinton County (in Region 4) is not taking it seriously (based on my visit back to my hometown a couple weeks ago). I now live in DuPage county where everyone is taking it relatively seriously. But in Clinton County when I wore my mask, I was the odd man out.

Skeptic - superficially yes, it’s ironic, but you’d predict that sparser-populated areas that didn’t have a lot of international travelers in January/February would have slower spreads: there’s built-in social distancing and fewer super-spreader opportunities. Even then, had their been wide-following of what the experts advise, their numbers would be even lower.

  9. Something doesn’t add up here. I realize there is a slight difference in time periods. But how can the statewide positivity rate be 3.8 percent with 10 of 11 regions with higher rates.

  12. My daughter has been preparing for her move to SUIC campus this Fall. It appears the instructors for all of her classes will opt to teach remotely even though the classes were scheduled to meet on campus. She’s going to break her housing contract if that’s the case and continue living here where the positivity rate and cases are much lower. I am relieved beyond words.

  14. 3 deaths in Coles County, 9 hospitalizations, and a new case rate per 100k population of way over 50. Coles County should be showing up as orange by the time the next county level risk map is posted. Then again, the map is way behind current data, so who knows.

  15. Does the quarantine include staying away from riots and will protesters be fined if they do not follow the quarantine rules? Chicago is a destination city for motorcycle-mania and other social gatherings to protest and tear down statues…are those from other states designated in the article going to be fined?

  17. Testing remains a big problem. State was pretty proud for a few days of more than 40k tests. But we can’t hold that figure and I’m still hearing four and five day turnarounds for test results.

  20. Florida has had 2.5x’s the number of positive cases and 25% fewer deaths than IL yet they are singled out as being irresponsible and IL is championed as having virus under control.

    This same thinking is what makes us feel “safe” about future pension obligations.

  21. Florida set a new daily record today for COVID-19 deaths. That state’s daily death count has been increasing more than Illinois recently. Not only did Republican leadership mismanage the pandemic by opening too early, but Florida has no Medicaid expansion.

    Illinois deaths have decreased. Florida got worse with more deaths and massive daily increases in new cases since reopening the economy early.

  22. This argument over deaths is ridiculous. First of all, IL was hit harder earlier before there were more effective treatments for hospitalized patients. Secondly, COVID is not over, let’s revisit this discussion when all is said and done and we have a more complete picture. A “logical thinker” would realize that.

    The state average is calculated on the number of tests statewide and the number of positives. It’s not an average of the district averages.

    But with that said, I’m not sure why IDPH numbers are so different from Hannah’s.
