Cable yakker tries to pull a Max Cleland on Duckworth

Posted in:

* I despise national politics, particularly the talking heads on the cable teevee. And I hate feeling like I need to post stuff like this, but I dinged Duckworth yesterday, so here we go

Before launching a broadside against Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Fox News host Tucker Carlson acknowledged that it’s not easy to go after a Purple Heart recipient who lost both her legs while serving her country in Iraq.

“You’re not supposed to criticize Tammy Duckworth in any way because she once served in the military,” Carlson said Monday night.

That didn’t stop him from calling Duckworth, a contender to be presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s running mate, “a deeply silly and unimpressive person” and suggesting that she and other Democratic leaders “actually hate America.”

More

“It’s long been considered out of bounds to question a person’s patriotism. It’s a very strong charge, and we try not ever to make it. But in the face of all of this, the conclusion can’t be avoided. These people actually hate America. There’s no longer a question about that,” Carlson claimed.

His full remarks are here.

* First of all, she didn’t just serve in the military

Maj. Ladda “Tammy” Duckworth remembers seeing a ball of flame after an RPG hit her helicopter, and wondering why her legs couldn’t work the control pedals.

“I found out later the pedals were gone, and so were my legs,” she said.

The 36-year-old Illinois Army National Guard pilot was returning from a mission Nov. 12 when the attack occurred. Before the attack, Duckworth said, she had flown more than 120 combat hours during her eight months in Iraq without incident.

But that day insurgents scored a direct hit on her Black Hawk, seriously wounding her and another guardsman inside. Doctors told her she lost nearly half the blood in her body and almost lost her right arm as well.

“I didn’t know I was hurt,” she said. “We had started taking some small-arms fire, and I turned to my co-pilot and said we could be in for some trouble. As the words left my mouth, there was a big fireball at my knees.”

To be clear, her records in politics and in government are totally fair game. Her political abilities ought to be questioned.

* Her response…

Does @TuckerCarlson want to walk a mile in my legs and then tell me whether or not I love America?

  1. Well, I detest Tucker Carlson and the network he works for. His quote, “It’s long been considered out of bounds to question a person’s patriotism. It’s a very strong charge, and we try not ever to make it,” is laughable. His network questions the patriotism all the time.

  2. Carlson’s comments are a disgrace obviously. The attack that she “hates” her country says something about who Carlson is, and nothing about Duckworth.

  3. =“You’re not supposed to criticize Tammy Duckworth in any way because she once served in the military,”=

Sure you can criticize Duckworth. No public official is immune from legitimate criticism. But nothing in Carlson’s remarks had anything to do with her time as an elected official or policy positions she may have taken. His comments are nothing more than lazy pandering. I’m not sure how any Republican’s cause is advanced by claiming that a disabled veteran hates America.

  4. This is 2020 I try to avoid having thoughts, but her response was pitch perfect.

I’m not a big fan of her political skills, but if Uncle Joe picks her for VP she’s going to drive the right crazy.

Plus Trump hates women and she’s a woman who served–unlike him.

  5. Tucker and his pay masters have been questioning the patriotism of everyone who disagrees with them for as long as they’ve been on the air. Out of bounds? Not when they’re talking about Democrats. You can look it up and replay the tapes if you don’t believe me.

I read recently that this guy might run for President in 2024. By then the national GOP will be mostly racists and Q Anon disciples so he will be perfectly poised to lead it to its next landslide defeat.

  8. No caveat about taking a deep breath before commenting? Carlson’s good buddy wants to keep statues of people who hated our country so much they waged actual war against it. Lot of real hypocrites being discussed today.

  9. Seriously. The entire electoral strategy of the right wing hinges on telling people that Democrats hate America and everything it stands for at every opportunity.

  10. Can we really label the guy with the largest cable news audience in America as a “yakker”?

You’re naive to downplay his influence like that and even more naive to think a large segment of America doesn’t agree with him that Senator Duckworth, whose service to the country is obviously admirable, is absolutely dead wrong about this issue and 100% worthy of the criticism.

  13. Don’t see the outrage.

Trump vehemently, and successfully attacked Gold Star families in 2016. Didn’t hurt him the least.

His Pravda doing the same with an veteran who lost both legs in combat can’t be that much of a stretch.

Waiting for the VFW to condemn Goofy’s remarks anytime now.

Mixed race, but her dad’s family goes all the way back to revolutionary times.

Carlson pushes racist thoughts and ideals.

    It’s his schtick.

Also, ratings, you can have high ratings and be in complete counter to the majority of what people are thinking.

It’s not like 51% of America is watching Carlson, lol

  23. Sen. John McCain said it best (see Rich’s link about the headline): “reprehensible”. There’s nothing wrong with Carlson criticizing Duckworth on political issues, but questioning her patriotism is reprehensible.

Sadly, @efudd is right—Trump successfully attacked the Gold Star family and his attack did not hurt him in the least. Saxby Chambliss beat Max Cleland. These kinds of attacks work which is why a jerk like Carlson will probably get away with his horrendous comments and not lose a single viewer.

Yes, I can imagine the conversation. I don’t get the vapors everytime someone wants to have a conversation or has an opinion that I disagree with.

I relish the chance to debate and discuss, that is what patriots do. We don’t hide in a bunker when the meanies show up.

The far left and far right have become intolerable in their intolerance and delicate fee fees.

America was great when we could handle the concept of ‘loyal dissent”.

And, I am pretty sure we won’t be knocking down the Washington monument or sanitizing the Founding Fathers anytime soon.

There is a serious difference between those who were actively traitorous and attacked the USA and people who practiced the norms of their time, even if repugnant by our standards.

Comment by JS Mill Tuesday, Jul 7, 20 @ 2:11 pm

  38. What efudd said. Faux News only delivers personal attacks on the patriotism and character of anyone who doesn’t tow the propaganda line. Tucker delivers all the hate old, white conservatives and evangelical “christians” who watch him love to feed on.

    I don’t think so.

Sorry, Tucker, but Tammy has paid a tremendous price defending American. And sorry, Tammy, President Trump did not make one mention of dead confederates at his Mt. Rushmore speech.

=== Can anyone imagine the national conversation about Washington DC changing its name, removing the Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial at the same time Mount Rushmore is sandblasted?===

    Here’s the thing…

We *all* can say we feel that the founding fathers and revolutionary heroes are not the same as the traitors…

… what Trump and others like Trump are saying that you can’t remove *any* because the vandalism of the founding fathers must end.

    That’s the rub.

How this is being politicized from the obvious to the cover of vandals to protect the unworthy is protecting… systemic and institutional racism… by its own definition.

It’s like accepting the racist ideals because you can’t understand the difference between the traitors and the founders.

Surprised you decided to opine as you did. Huh.

But her political positions, lack of depth on issues, and statements questioning whether this country should honor the contributions of George Washington are all fair game and deeply troubling. She’s a political and policy lightweight and doesn’t belong one heartbeat away from the Oval Office.

  44. This is one huge difference between the US and Canada, thanks to some business stuff I have been to Ottawa ON a few times and have visited most of the museums and historical there.

To borrow a phrase that I have heard George Will use, the Canadians look at their history with ‘dry eyes’, consistently they look at the impacts of their actions and what they have gotten wrong along with what they have gotten right. Anytime you look at anyone in history (and life in general) without looking at the whole person you are bound to be disappointed.

That all being said, Tucker is a tool

  45. Tucker Carlson is a millionaire who is the son of millionaires who were the children of millionaires who were the children of millionaires.

And now he makes money inciting poor, lower middle class, and middle class conservatives into supporting a system of government that only serves the heirs of the already rich.

Of course a man with no history of service to his country attacks a decorated veteran. He’s afraid of the mirror. Afraid of the craven and worthless coward he sees staring back at him. A man who has done nothing to make the world better for him having lived in it.

  46. =But are lies about her patriotism any worse than her lie that President Trump praised dead traitors during his speech at Mt. Rushmore?=

Trump’s support for confederate generals and symbols is well established by his own words and deeds. The confederates were traitors. So, she isn’t lying.

Comment by JS Mill Tuesday, Jul 7, 20 @ 2:41 pm

  47. I had a friend, now deceased, Navy veteran, Viet Nam, former POW.

Following a parade, Duckworth, then campaigning for US Senate, visited the local veteran’s post. My friend told Duckworth that he respected her service, but could not vote for her due to her politics. Plain and simple.

It is possible to separate Duckworth’s military service from her politics. She is left of center and occasionally makes public statements that make you wince. Calling for a national dialogue on George Washington is one such gaffe. There are no Confederate generals at Mount Rushmore and contrary to Duckworth’s blanket statement Trump never addressed those individuals by name during his speech. He referred to Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt.

This was not one of Duckworth’s better interviews.

When was that, exactly? Was it in 72’ when republicans doubted the patriotism of WW2 veteran George McGovern? Or when they smeared US Army veterans Walter Mondale and Mike Dukakis? Or when they insulted and demeaned the service of Vietnam veterans John Kerry and Max Cleland? Or when they turned their backs on former POW John McCain in favor of a draft-dodger? Conservative hatred of the majority of US military veterans is a not a new thing that just started a few years ago. They’re quick to mouth platitudes, but history proves that they only ever loved American troops that agree with them 100% of the time.

If you want to attack her, spend time reviewing her record in the Senate and then call her out on her voting record, or for the legislation she’s signed on to, or for her support of veterans, or of working mothers …

That Tucker’s “ratings” are one defense is not even worth comment.

That Duckworth opened herself to criticism ignores what the criticism was.

To say she’s wrong about it being appropriate to have a dialogue about removing confederate memorials? Go ahead.

Or perhaps you enjoy being told you hate America simply because someone disagrees with your positions.

Carlson has lost 6 major advertisers in the past week from Disney and T-Mobile to even conservative Papa John’s. He didn’t have that many to begin with.

Frankly I’d encourage more Democratic politicians to do so. Not because it’s going to change the minds of viewers. It most certainly won’t. But it will further burnish the current Republican message which seems to focused on protecting the confederate flag and civil war monuments while ignoring a pandemic and racial inequality. Great message for the base. Not sure if it gets suburban soccer moms (and dads) on your side.
