A national face mask mandate could act as a substitute to renewed lockdowns that would otherwise deduct about 5 per cent from gross domestic product, Goldman Sachs analysts argue as a number of states in the US have paused or reversed easing measures in response to growth in coronavirus cases.
“We find that face masks are associated with significantly better coronavirus outcomes,” according to Jan Hatzius, economist at Goldman Sachs. “Our baseline estimate is that a national mandate could raise the percentage of people who wear masks by 15 percentage points and cut the daily growth rate of confirmed cases by 1.0pp to 0.6 per cent.”
Goldman said it analysed the impact of face mask mandates in 20 American states and the District of Columbia between April 8 and June 24 and data on mask usage from YouGov and found that they raise the percentage of people who “always” or “frequently” wear masks by around 25pp in the 30 days after the order is signed. They estimate that a national mask mandate would increase usage by “statistically significant and economically large amounts” in states that currently do not require it.
Despite the rise in coronavirus cases mask usage remains a political issue in the US and is voluntary in a number of states. Goldman found that mask usage is highest in the Northeast, which was particularly hard hit by the pandemic, but where conditions have now improved, while the numbers are far lower in the south.
Arizona, Texas and Florida, which were among the first states to reopen and have seen a jump in coronavirus cases in recent weeks, have all reversed easing measures. Indeed, Goldman Sachs analysis found that reopenings have been delayed or reversed for about 40 per cent of the US population, which has raised fears about fresh lockdowns.

Morons. I understand economic concerns of the shutdown. But I can’t understand objections to wearing a simple mask.
I went to see my doctor yesterday for my annual physical. They made us wear double masks which made it very hard to breathe. I have asthma, but I’d rather have weak breathing than no breathing at all.

Frankly, how can people be so stupid. This is growing again. it’s at our doorstep again. Elkhart County Indiana, you know the one next to Notre Dame. Their hospitals are nearing full capacity. When it is coming to rural areas, that is bad.

Yet another proof (as if we need one) of what an absence of early, firm, clear and sustained national policy on masks, social distancing, etc. has engendered.
School districts - those that go back to in-person teaching - really shouldn’t permit unmasked persons on school premises.
I’m starting to fear it’s all moot, though, given the fact that the virus’s curve will not be sufficiently flattened in many/most places to allow most students to go to school in August or September.

While incredibly stupid the one thing these rallies do is help illustrate that this is a small minority. But I could be wrong. Maybe there are plans for an overflow March for those that can’t get into the main event.

Take them at their word, and treat them seriously. Is a permit required for a crowd of that size? Does the city have to approve closing streets? Security? Insurance? Sanitation? Financial responsibility?
The police agencies should have them in for a planning session. City, state, state cap police, Etc.

One of the primary discussions in this group is trying to find a pediatrician that will write a note that their kids do not have to wear masks to school. Beyond that, it is largely the anti-vaxxer crowd who won’t be told what to do by government.

I feel bad for teachers and administrators next year. You know these parents are going to be emboldened and they will get their kids to have “medical” reasons for not wearing masks. The march is a joke but the next school year will not be.

Most kids learn right fro wrong from their parents and other adults. It’s our responsibility to encourage our kids to do things like wearing a helmet when they’re On a bike, buckling up in the car, and wearing a face mask in a pandemic. I feel for these kids being turned into political pawns who would put their health and the health of others at risk.

I know of at least ten families in my neighborhood who will absolutely home school if the schools open as normal at full capacity, even with masks. If it’s some sort of hybrid - in class/online, staggered days/grades - then the calculus for each family is a little different
