857 new cases, 39 additional deaths

* Press release…

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today announced 857 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 39 additional confirmed deaths.

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 140,291 cases, including 6,847 deaths, in 101 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 30,425 specimens for a total of 1,490,952. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from June 19–June 25 is 3%.

Following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, IDPH is now reporting both confirmed and probable cases and deaths on its website. Reporting probable cases will help show the potential burden of COVID-19 illness and efficacy of population-based non-pharmaceutical interventions.

  1. We’ve hit a slightly elevated plateau, raw daily new case numbers wise. Florida and Texas numbers exploded, and those states are moving backward by shutting down bars. Today the vice president spoke at a press conference and did not recommend wearing masks. Pathetic and a severe dereliction of duty to protect the country.

  2. The trend line for new cases this week has been bad.

  3. So looking at the same three day period from last week you have a 34% jump in cases. Definitely trending up right now and just now getting to the Phase 4 reopenings. You have to wonder if we can sustain a level that will allow schools to open or alternatively, can we actually open the schools when the trend is going up.

I wasn’t sure he’s been watching the same pandemic I’ve been watching.

  5. @Might as Well Jump
Schools will reopen. To many parents will demand it. Then they will close down again one or more times throughout the year.
    It will be a circus.

  6. Iowa isn’t even requiring masks at their schools as a statewide mandate.

  7. I would hesitate to read too much into what we are seeing this week. I am going to wait for the experts that have done a very good job of advising and guiding the state so far to tell us what we are seeing is a sign of concern that requires different action.

It isn’t good. Wear a mask. Dallas County (pop. 2.6 million) reported 496 new COVID-19 cases today. Two-mile long line to get a test https://twitter.com/photosbylesko/status/1276594030202310659

I delete goofy comments. I delete comments that attack other commenters in a personal way. I delete fact-free comments. I delete Facebook conspiracy theory comments. I delete national political comments that are not suitable for the post. I don’t delete tweets I disagree with on an opinion basis. Bite me, pal.

  15. “People are getting excited and dropping their guard.“

This could develop into a real problem in states like ours, who worked hard to bring the numbers down.

  18. We have to be very careful in how we move forward from here. There’s a natural tendency for people to feel that this is behind us. It isn’t. If anything we should be even more vigilant in wearing masks, practicing social distancing and just staying safe. Once more people are out and about the numbers will inevitably go up. Being smart is what we’ll keep that in check and prevent sliding back as other states have.

Comment by Pundent Friday, Jun 26, 20 @ 4:14 pm

  19. Leaders should stress that the best economic policy is to beat back the virus as quickly and aggressively as possible. Why be lax and have to shut down parts of the economy again, like Texas and Florida? We are so lacking in national leadership.
