Today’s quotable

* Block Club Chicago

The head of the Illinois Department of Public Health took issue Thursday with people who oppose wearing masks to protect others from the spread of coronavirus, saying it’s like playing “Russian roulette.”

Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the state’s health department, told mask opponents Thursday: “Your individual actions, or even your inactions, will still affect everyone in this state.

“I’m likening the refusal to wear face coverings to a game of Russian roulette, as we don’t know who’s infected, we don’t know if we are infected,” Ezike said.”We’re just taking a chance.

“This game of Russkaya ruletka is a game that is very risky, the stakes are high. It’s potentially fatal. Let’s not gamble with coronavirus. We don’t even know the longterm affects of having COVID-19 — what might happen to our lungs 5, 10, 20 years after being infected.”

And she said it with what sounded like the proper accent.

…Adding… I’m told Dr. Ezike speaks five languages.

  1. An old white guy evoking “I can’t breathe” while participating in a anti-mask rally during a pandemic a special kind of evil.

  2. Dr. Ezike has that treating physician way of not lecturing you, but telling you not to or to do something that is convincing.
She has been a big plus for Illinois in dealing with the virus issues.

  3. Wearing masks works.

“Sixteen states recommend, but do not require, its residents to wear masks in public. In those states, new coronavirus cases have risen by 84% over the last two weeks. In the 11 states that mandate wearing masks in public, new cases have fallen by 25% over the last two weeks.”

  4. I’d like to say what I think about that guy in Scottsdale, but it would probably get me banned. It definitely wouldn’t be family friendly

  5. Compare and contrast that with the Governor of Florida who won’t mandate mask usage because “people don’t like being told what to do.”

The sooner we all realize that we have to make some small personal sacrifices to put this horrible experience behind us and rebuild our economy the better.

  6. Excellent. She is why Illinois has done so well.

  7. How small a person must be to make a big deal out of wearing a mask.

Although that dude is out in 109 degrees wearing a tie.

    But not a mask.

  9. For Arizona this is a time for reflection not defiance. What could they have done to avoid the situation they now face and how do they quickly adjust to the reality they’re facing. I have to think that masks are part of that answer. And even if they aren’t are you so callous as to complain that a mask is uncomfortable while people in your state are dying?

Comment by Pundent Thursday, Jun 25, 20 @ 5:40 pm

  10. Not wearing a mask is analogous to driving drunk, except your judgment is impaired by sober stupidity.

We passed DUI laws to protect us from people who make selfishly stupid choices, we even passed seatbelt laws to protect people from themselves.

We should start enforcing mask laws in public for the same reasons. And we ought to fine premises that allow patrons to violate the mask requirement and give 1/2 of the fine to local public health departments for enforcement costs.

  11. Mocking a black man who was slowly murdered by a cop while his buddies stood guard to protest the inconvenience of putting a piece of cloth over your face to protect others.

Life without any shame must be amazing.

  12. Thank you, Rich, for trying to convince people about the value of masks. It is kind of a “least restrictive” situation. We could be very open, with business thriving, if everyone would wear a mask. That is how they did it in Japan, with great success. Really sad how it is playing out here.

  13. There is some good news to report for Arizona. In recent days, the counties of Maricopa and Pima, along with several cities, have passed ordinances, mandating the use of masks in public places.

  14. For those who have absolutely hated the so-called “lockdown,” just wear the dang mask. If we all wear the mask and social distance, we can be opened up. There is something simple and concrete that we all can do to be sure we can stay safe and, importantly, open businesses to more customers.

All we have to do is wear a simple mask. Not a burden. Not a violation of rights. Just the way we have to live together in society. You want to reopen? Wear a dang mask.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Jun 25, 20 @ 7:33 pm

  15. If a second wave happens because of poor behaviors I truly think that people caught not wearing masks should face repercussions. If they refuse then force should be applied. I’m not going to sit back allow society to crumble because of societies dunces and I believe a second wave could end this clearly fragile country.

It’s time we get serious. The data is clear that masks help limit spread.

  16. For sure, Dr. Ezike has been an asset to our state in this crisis. She’s smart and unflappable, and her command of Spanish makes me cringe at my own mangled attempts at its use.

Thank you for your service to Illinois, Dr. Ezike.

  18. The refusal to wear a protective mask is simply selfish…no other explanation is necessary.

  19. I’m trying to imagine an intelligent conversation between the fabulous Dr. Ezike and willfully ignorant mask refusenics…didn’t work.
