The Clean Energy Jobs Act, which was a premiere piece of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s Covid-derailed budget, still remains popular among the electorate, according to a new poll. The proposal, which would convert Illinois to 100 percent renewable energy by 2050, has the support of 82 percent of Illinoisans, according to a survey conducted by Global Strategy Group for the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition. Rep. Ann Williams, who plans to introduce the bill again later in the year, says it would put “thousands of people who have permanently lost their jobs back to work — we can no longer wait to act on climate change.” The poll shows 98 percent of Democrats support the idea, 60 percent of Republicans and 84 percent of Independents. The proposal has high support in Chicago, 93 percent; and Cook County, 85 percent; and then declines some in outlying areas. Northern and central Illinois show 71 percent support; and southern Illinois has 76 percent. The survey was conducted May 18-21 by interviewing 600 residents statewide by landline, cell phone and text and has a margin of error of +/- 4.0 percent.

Obviously more bad news for the ILGOP. It’s the Trump party now and that of extremists. Haven’t seen that much from ILGOP leadership as far as push-back, at least not on a continual and very public basis. It seems the extremists are taking the oxygen out of the room, in the media with the lawsuits and recall joke. But what do they care about the party’s fortunes as long as they have their little power in their districts?

I hate to say it, but if you look at the partisan breakdown of the poll, it looks like the Trump and Pritzker favorable/unfavorable tracks right along with party ID. The partisan breakdown itself also seems to be reflective of the last election– i.e. no surprises.

Being Governor of Illinois has to be an incredibly exhausting job.
While the Gov’s “Farmer Defense” was a laugh out loud moment, it did involve his family and I think he was right in feeling family issues are off limits.
Yes, his poll numbers are going down, but he actually seems to be hanging in and has earned a solid vote of support from Illinois residents.

The rest to the politics (outside the Clean Energy aspects, which I like seeing, btw) is partisan noise, but leaning towards Dem leadership showing up here in Illinois, led by Governor Pritzker, and the GOP disappointment (*some* unfair to those ILGA GOP folks) led by POTUS.

I am good with the Clean Energy Jobs Act, as long as hydrocarbons are defined as “renewable”, which they are. (I agree with Dr. Thomas Gold.)

Looks like leadership is more important than ideology in times of crisis. Pritzker has been willing to address the people of this state every day while the Republicans have been reduced to engaging in stunts to appease a small minority.

Pundent As someone who likes a choice in voting, the real issue in Illinois is the republicans struggle with DECENT candidates through the state. You are correct with the broad brush. I remember a certain Speaker that has been on the record that supermajority is some of his least favorite times to lead. I agree they need to do much better with the candidates other than blame the majority.

Different polls and different methodologies, but there is some evidence of that. The “rally around the leader” effect that kicks in during a crisis is likely waning, but he’s still in pretty good shape.
Rich posted something a few weeks ago about the need for a carrot-and-stick approach. I’d emphasize the carrot ahead of tomorrow’s movement into a new stage and for several days after that, with plenty reminders we’re not out of the woods. He’s proven he can manage the crisis and slow the virus. Now he needs to show voters he can put the state on the road to recovery, otherwise his approval rating will return to pre-COVID levels by the fall.

It does seem like he’s losing some of the “rally around the leader” uptick, but Morning Consult had him at +43 to 41 disapproval prior to the pandemic.

Two points.
1) I would view the “do you support CEJA” as a proxy for “do you support clean energy.” In poll after poll the public is widely supportive of clean energy. This is good news for any clean energy legislation which would get similarly strong approval.
2) 49% of people know someone or have friends and family members who have had Covid. That’s a pretty stunning number for a virus that didn’t exist in this country four months ago.

According to this poll the state is Democratic with leaners at 52% and Republicans with leaners at 37%.
Probably accurate enough. Only confirms what I have said before that Illinois is a solid Democratic state. That will be further evidenced by the fact that Trump will pour no resources into Illinois as neither did Bush, McCain or Romney before him.

Not Durkin, not Brady, not the phony Raunerites now in the General Assembly because of Bruce Rauner… not even the Hateful Eight… with the five in the Eastern Bloc….

The two Raunerites at the helm… until they go… the existing failure that is a former, statewide, GOP party… will never re-emerge.
Skillicorn? Nothing about his tenure in the House is serious. Taking him serious to any discussion of the bigger GOP party problems is like worried about a broken light on a boat with a hole so big water won’t be stopped unless that boat is in dry dock.

OW- Finally run and get off the sidelines. My concern is you don’t have to be for or against Trump even. Give people a choice of decent ideas. Trump has had some great ideas. You can support the policies and not the nonsense that goes with it or the person. The economy was buzzin. Where are the real leaders in Illinois on that side of the aisle?

A year and a half after Rauner’s defeat, none of these folks are victims at this point, they’re complicit. And they weren’t exactly setting the world on fire before Bruce Rauner. And I would agree, when you embrace division, hate, and racism as your brand, nothing else matters. Even if you do occasionally have a good idea.
I realize that Durkin, Brady, and others are in a tough spot given the state of the Republican brand these days, but the longer they sit on the sidelines the harder it is to separate them from that messaging.

As you grab my comment, I note, since January 2019 until the time I type this, and forward too, I have held them ALL accountable, calling them out, not only on the past, “with receipts”, but even to the disappointment(S) I’ve seen, even going so far as to type they should start all over, eat it, own it, and move forward.

So so so much in agreement.
There are some incredibly talented people, folks I greatly respect, that are choosing not to move forward, even as the leaders sit in some tough spots, and the party and the seats that exist become more regional and less statewide.
They don’t need me. They *need* to take the really talented folks, the skilled people I really like and admire… and do the job to rebuild and construct… and in a statewide manner… be those leaders to move the party beyond this want to be smaller, angrier, less urban, more rural… and less inclusive too.
They need “me” to come back… they just don’t need me to be there to do it.

So you do a poll where you describe something that most folks generally support, “clean energy”, don’t describe any details, use some leading questions (expected in most polls), and don’t explain the cost to consumers. “Free Clean Energy” and get 84%. Should be higher. Governor polling numbers are lower than they should be and Trumps are higher than other polls. The rejection rate for the polling questions are far too low given the poll and topic. Folks just don’t take long polls.
