Protesters held signs expressing disgust for the way Governor JB Pritzker’s handling things.
Two protests, noisy, yet peaceful, for the most part. Chicago police broke up this fight between a guy holding a Nazi flag and a man who was upset by it.

WGEM’s Capitol Bureau Chief Mike Miletich asked Doug Walter why he was comparing Pritzker to Adolf Hitler. The Pana resident’s sign showed a photo of the governor with an equal sign next to the leader of the Nazi party. […]
“Is it okay to have an anti-Semitic sign like this,” Miletich asked. “You bet it is.” Walter then pointed to Pritzker’s photo. “He is Hitler. They are one in the same. They are one in the same.”
A separate participant at the rally held a sign with Hitler’s mustache drawn on a photo of Pritzker with swastikas drawn on both sides.
The Bureau asked Linda Scheaffer if she knew the governor’s family history.
She said it doesn’t matter, “because he’s a hypocrite.” However, Scheaffer added she would not partake in an interview.

Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Midwest Regional Director David Goldenberg issued the following statement today in response to the continued presence of antisemitism, racism and Nazi comparisons at “stay at home” protests in Springfield and Chicago:
“The comparison of Illinois’s democratically elected governor to Hitler is antisemitic – period. Such vile comparisons trivialize and dishonor the memories of the millions killed by Nazi Germany.
With antisemitic incidents at an all-time high and up 340% in Illinois since 2016, these protests are becoming rallying points for hate and extremism. We are deeply concerned by the silence of speakers at these protests – including elected officials – who failed to condemn the antisemitism, racism and Nazi comparisons of attendees while stoking the flames of hatred. Leaders across the state and political spectrum must forcefully and unambiguously condemn this language.”

On May 18 at 11:00am CT, community and civic leaders from across Illinois will come together for a virtual news conference to condemn the antisemitism, racism, and extremism reported at recent “stay-at-home” protests in Springfield and Chicago.
Over the last two weeks, multiple protests concerning coronavirus restrictions have taken place across Illinois, with attendees calling for stay-at-home orders to be lifted. Media reports have shown some attendees displaying antisemitic, racist, and extremist-related signs and engaging in hateful rhetoric.
Community leaders will make opening remarks followed by questions from the media.

It’s high time that the politicians who are speaking and hosting these rallies denounce these cretins and do something to keep them away from the events. But don’t hold your breath…

I do wonder what it’s like to be drawing a swastika on a poster and thinking to oneself “this is a good idea” and then spend all day carrying a swastika laden poster around thinking to oneself “this is a good idea.”
Perhaps we should do the right wing/alt-right/anti-vaxx/anti-science/pro-Qanon/pro 3% militia activists a favor and produce a list of dictators that weren’t also anti-Semitic so that they can make comparisons to dictators from history without wading into Nazi filled waters.
After all, it wasn’t very long ago when tens of thousands of Republicans voted for a Nazi to represent them in congress.

So correct. Sadly, the GOP has decided that fighting pandemic response measures is the key for their election prospects. Ginning up the hatred for and lying about the proponents of public health measures is critical to this effort. What little GOP condemnation there may be is purposely faint to avoid political infighting. They must not interfere with the strategy.

The organizers of the “Open Illinois” events asked that such hate symbols not be displayed at the protests and put these statements in writing. Nonetheless, there appear to have been a few in Springfield and Chicago.
The presence of a few objectionable signs among hundreds does not make the purposes of both assemblies entirely illegitimate.

It’s hard for me to see this drek coming from the trashiest segments of society. I can have a pretty “uncivil” side at times, especially when it comes to antiemitism. I always pray that my civil side wins out seeing as I really enjoy and love my kids, my spouse and my freedom. So far, so good.

In November, we need an overwhelming majority to speak on what this country is about, and who we are as a people. The Republican Party needs to be soundly beaten through voters across the country. It’s a subset of that party that carries the insane messaging, but the majority of that party accepts that without speaking out. They are ensuring their own demise. November will dwarf 2018 results that clearly said that we as a nation do not support this ideology.

While I understand this sentiment, Hitler didn’t appear on the spot instantaneously as the Hitler we see looking back on history. It was a slow crescendo of abuses, absurdities, growing insult, and growing support until one day someone made a Faustian bargain that gave him a little power, a little legitimacy and so it grew until it became a crushing loudness followed by the sudden silence of millions of murdered innocents and a horror that was only stopped by tens of millions of lives traded on the battle field for a defeated nation.
No, there isn’t an American Hitler — but there sure seem to be some symptoms of the same kind of infection that caused so much death at the hands of the hateful ignorant empowering leaders without scruple supported by those that would use the opportunity to grab all they could take.
Heck, we even mock the D-bags that show up to the armed rallies and take over capitol buildings instead of seeking to give them actual consequences.
Compare our responses now to the response we see to left wing protests of the WTO of the past. (Though I imagine there’s a weird intersection of left and right at current WTO protests)

We’ve seen this play out all too often throughout time. “I didn’t participate so don’t blame me.” This especially applies to leaders like state representatives. If they don’t speak out and act against improper actions, they are acquiescing to the bad.

Good for them, but so what? It doesn’t mean a thing until they and the GOP leadership speak out publicly to disavow the anti-Semtic, far right element more prominent in these protests. It doesn’t mean a thing until GOP leadership and members in the GA call Miller, Bailey, et al. to account.
Another commenter correctly pointed out that Hitler did not burst onto the scene fully formed. It happened haphazardly, in a time of crisis, when mainstream politicians and people thought they could control and work with the Nazis to beat down the left. They stayed silent until they themselves were silenced.
The GOP leadership should make a note of this bit of history. Those who try to ride tigers quite often wind up inside them. Act now, take formal action to call the right wing nut jobs in your caucus to account, or be feckless hand-wringers on your way to political meaninglessness and ridicule.

Besides, as appropriate, when those protests took place when they turned violent, there were arrests and enforcement. Up until then, one is allowed to protest. These goofs should expect the same treatment — keep it peaceful, your right to protest will be protected. Become violent, pay the consequences.

Not only did no one attending challenge these signs as inappropriate, they felt very comfortable having these signs for everyone to see.

It’s not like this is the first time hateful language has followed these events. If you want to be affiliated with these groups, they are a stain on you, you don’t kick them out… they feel comfortable, then you’re welcoming them
