To date, we have run a total of 346,286 tests for COVID-19, with 13,139 being reported in the last 24 hours.
Today we are reporting an additional 2122 new cases of COVID-19 here in Illinois, for a total of 65,962 cases. Unfortunately I’m also reporting the largest number of fatalities reported in a single 24 hour period with 176 deaths which brings us to a total of 2838 lives lost in Illinois associated with COVID-19.
Regarding hospitalizations, in the hospitals throughout the state we have 4780 people who were reported to be in the hospital, of those 1266 patients were in the intensive care unit. And of those Intensive Care Unit patients 780 were on ventilators.
On the recovery front, cases who responded to our survey continue to report recovery from this deadly virus. 47% of those surveyed within 14 days from their positive test report illness recovering. 74% of individual surveyed 28 days after their positive test, no longer experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and are reporting recovering.

The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have processed 346,286 specimens for a total of 13,139.

Title seems to indicate 13139 new cases but story indicates that is test with a smaller number of new infections.

I thought the same thing, I think it’s 2,000 something new cases (13,000 something total cases). I hope.

2122 new cases of Covid-19 from the 13,139 tests. McLean County now as 104 confirmed cases.

I think it is supposed to be:
13,139 New Tests
2,122 New Cases of COVID-19
That would be 16.15% tests coming back positive which would be consistent with recent days.

Looks like a good start to recognizing differences that, at least so far, are quite striking throughout the state.
As to the regions that are listed I am not certain as to whether each one will be guided by the trends in that “whole region” or whether there will be potential differences recognized on a county by county basis. For example what may be the situation in Dekalb county may not even be remotely the same as in Putnam county.

So far, due to COVID-19 we’ve lost the equivalent of the entire population of Mount Morris, Illinois.

As I said yesterday, we simply cannot trust the Sunday and Monday lives lost counts. To go from extremely small numbers on Mondays to large ones on Tuesdays isn’t helping us get a handle on whether we are declining. However, even the 3 day average is 90+.

The lives lost numbers coming out of the weekend are clearly lagging. The actual daily numbers likely have much less variance in them. Unfortunately, if you use a 14 day average, we are still experiencing an increase in average lives lost per day.

As others have pointed out for each of the last three weeks we have seen low counts on Sunday and Monday followed by a high count on Tuesday. The total deaths over seven days from Monday through Sunday for the last four weeks are 446, 570, 643, and 685. The weekly count is still rising but at a consistently slower rate. As Rich and others have also pointed out, deaths are a lagging indicator.
The positive test rate is other number one can extract from the IDPH totals. As noted it has remained at roughly 16% since April 24, except for April 30 and May 1 when it was markedly higher. That period corresponds to the time when Illinois began exceeding 10,000 tests a day. The daily rate does not appear to be either increasing or decreasing since the number tests were increased.
