…Adding… The Illinois State Police estimates a crowd of 450 outside the Thompson Center, including counter-protesters.

* But just thank your lucky stars you don’t live in Michigan, which has some truly bonkers protesters. The quote in my tweet is from today’s Kass column…

"Friday’s protesters in Illinois and Chicago will be mocked as they were in Michigan as crazy 'right wingers.'" I seriously doubt Illinois protests will be this crazy https://t.co/CtV0RouAdO

  6. i saw TV coverage stating Michigan is Open Carry state and allows guns in the State Capitol, but not signs.

there is something drastically wrong with that ….

  7. Counter protesters don’t seem fond of driving union-built American cars.

Comment by City Zen Friday, May 1, 20 @ 12:45 pm

  8. I’m becoming increasing concerned that government of the people, by the people, for the people can not last much longer with so many selfish people who appear to be immune to facts and reason.

And it really galls me that their votes count as much as mine. I know there are very few people like this (relative to the total population of sane, sentient humans). But these people never miss an election and too many on the reality based side can’t be bothered to cast a vote.

Somedays it feels like we’re nearing a tipping point. It’s be nice if these morons didn’t get the news coverage they do, but like the Tea Party, the news media can’t look away from a freak show. What a shame.

    Comment by 47th Ward Friday, May 1, 20 @ 12:48 pm

  9. Sign states ‘Life, liberty, freedom’.

First, the quote is wrong. Pursuit of happiness must have been too long to write? Second, liberty and freedom are the same thing. Third- your liberty is not supposed to endanger my life.

    LOL

Pedestrians walking around them and the press covering them don’t count.

Maybe 1,000… if you combined BOTH… and added an extra 100 for fun…

  15. You don’t have the right to infect us. And ban vaccines. I feel as if these are two extremes. We may need a vaccine to protect the public from the virus and we have the right to quarantine the infected.

    Comment by Levois J Friday, May 1, 20 @ 12:56 pm

  16. Tony Peraica, still struggling and failing to stay relevant.

Comment by Just wondering Friday, May 1, 20 @ 12:56 pm

  17. Let Peraica lead the march! He will head in the wrong direction like he did the last time. The wrong direction is wherever Tony is headed.

Comment by Helm Friday, May 1, 20 @ 12:59 pm

  18. Oh yeah, I notice Peraica is still around. I can’t believe it!

    Comment by Levois J Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:01 pm

  19. Peraica looks a bit more sober than his last attempted march to the County Building. It’s Friday. Give it a couple of hours.

Comment by Helm Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:01 pm

  20. The protesters need to head straight to the nearest ER, find someone coughing and sit down next them. Time for them to show their courage and prove this is all just being overblown and there is nothing to worry about.

Come on protesters, show your bravery.

Comment by Give Me A Break Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:01 pm

  21. I was just downtown and I would estimate they are
    between 1,000 -2,000.

Regardless, its less of a rally about opening up and more a rally in support of Donald Trump. In the online Trump community there is a movement called “raise the flag” where Trump worshipers post photos of themselves raising the Donald Trump flag. It’s important note that devotion to Trump has replaced Christianity (many of these people were Christian in name only and didn’t really understand theology) and it’s replaced loyalty and patriotism to the United States.

Trump knows this. That’s why he concurrently pushes two messages, one that promotes social Distancing and the lockdown because it’s a medical necessity while at the same
Time amplifying domestic right wing terrorists and zealots who are “anti-government” while at the same time pro authoritarian

Comment by Merica Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:02 pm

  22. I am shocked they let protesters in the MI capitol building with guns. Insane.

Comment by Centennial Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:04 pm

  23. I wish the counter protesters would stop. We need to keep people with critical thinking skills safe.

Comment by Norseman Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:05 pm

  24. These protests are not the general public but organized and attended by the right wing super-minority. Are you enjoying this, ILGOP leadership? By not socially distancing and wearing masks it’s clear these people don’t respect the rights and freedom of others to not suffer and die.

Comment by Grandson of Man Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:06 pm

  25. The Butt Mask sign…..that’s it, 2020 is over, he wins. I’m aware where his mask is. Thank God for that photo.

White fragility really is a thing.

  27. Thank you, Amalia

Comment by Mike Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:14 pm

  28. With Peraica there I’m surprised they found the Thompson Center. Would have thought they might have been at the Board of Trade or Macys.

Comment by West Side the Best Side Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:14 pm

  29. Have to say was disappointed by Gov’s inability to address whether his family is abiding by the order, especially when he so vehemently attacked Rep. Bailey, whom Gov rightly said was wrong. Unfortunately, the first lady is a public figure, there’s no way around that. She has an office in the Capitol and engages in official business. If she didn’t comply with the order and tax dollars were spent on any activity covered under the order, the public deserves to know. Part of the bargain when you run for public office is that you become public figures. That has costs as well as benefits. You cannot have the cake and eat it to so they say.

Comment by Senator Blutarsky Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:15 pm

  30. According to the poll on the other thread, 15% of Illinoisans think state government is overreacting to the crisis. That’s not an insignificant number.

    Comment by 47th Ward Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:16 pm

  31. 47th Ward,

You’re right, that isn’t an insignificant number. But this issue isn’t even going to be a majority rules issue in terms of public opinion. It’s gonna take something more

Comment by Senator Blutarsky Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:18 pm

  32. Demonstrators wearing surgical masks? Kinda ironic. Guess they don’t have the courage of their convictions.

Comment by Roman Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:22 pm

  33. ===whether his family is abiding by the order,===

How is staying in Florida not abiding by the order? No one has been able to explain what, exactly, Mrs. Pritzker has done that bothers them. Is it because she has a nice place in Florida that she can escape to? Yeah, that would be sweet, but what about everyone who is riding this out in Wisconsin, Michigan and other vacation destinations? Are they violating the order too? Seriously, attacking MK Pritzker just makes you look petty and mean.

    Zero point zero, Senator.

  34. ===The Butt Mask sign…..that’s it, 2020 is over, he wins. I’m aware where his mask is. Thank God for that photo.===

I missed that the first time. And now I see he has a N95 mask on his rump. I…cannot…un-see…that. Why do you hate me?

Comment by Proud Sucker Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:25 pm

  35. =You cannot have the cake and eat it to so they say.=

Actually you can. What you cannot do is eat your cake and have it.

These “protesters” are really silly. But help me understand the need to wear body armor and carry guns for a quarantine protest? What are they trying to compensate for by carrying these weapons? I have many and never have felt the need to carry other than when I hunt or go to the range.

Comment by JS Mill Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:27 pm

  36. Thanks for be so easily influenced beyond reason.

  37. I was concerned about these pro-death rallies becoming a thing. Then I saw Tony Peraica and went about my day as usual.

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:34 pm

  38. The experiment is over can someone please archive the constitution so in the future it may be revived. Trumps authoritarian regime has taken over by convincing people they are fighting authoritarianism. You could not right fiction like this without people laughing at you.

Comment by Publius Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:38 pm

  39. @47th Ward

===And it really galls me that their votes count as much as mine.===

What should gall you is that your side did not vote enough to keep them from relevance.

Comment by Nagidam Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:53 pm

  40. === That’s not an insignificant number. ===

“A YouGov survey of more than 8,000 American adults suggested last year that as many as one in six Americans are not entirely certain the world is round …”

A insanely large segment of our country believes Trump doesn’t lie.

It appears that there is a segment of our population who’ll believe anything.

Comment by Norseman Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:55 pm

  41. === But help me understand the need to wear body armor and carry guns for a quarantine protest? ===

They’re terrorists inciting fear if you don’t comply with their demands.

Comment by Norseman Friday, May 1, 20 @ 1:58 pm

  42. -How is staying in Florida not abiding by the order?-

I’ll go one further. If they are in Florida they are not subject to an Illinois order.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Friday, May 1, 20 @ 2:19 pm

  43. == They’re terrorists inciting fear if you don’t comply with their demands.==

Agreed, that seems to be the intention. Also, when did it become legal for non-LEO’s to walk around wearing bullet-proof vests while armed?

    Comment by Lester Holt’s Mustache Friday, May 1, 20 @ 3:24 pm

  44. == Counter protesters don’t seem fond of driving union-built American cars. ==

One of the protesters in Springfield had a beautiful white 50’s Caddy parked at the curb. Exact opposite of all those foreign econo-boxes

  45. President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho approves their message.

Comment by Northsider Friday, May 1, 20 @ 3:25 pm

  46. I’m sure the pics don’t show the totality of attendees, but I find it comical that the only non-white person at these protests is the nurse

    Comment by Lester Holt’s Mustache Friday, May 1, 20 @ 3:30 pm

  47. The protesters don’t need to wear masks and socially distance as they have ingested or injected disinfectant so no worries.

Comment by XDNR Friday, May 1, 20 @ 3:34 pm

  48. Given the Facebook reaction I am seeing on a news article about Peoria closing their pools for the summer due to coronavirus, I have a feeling the protests are only going to get more unhinged as the temp heats up.

Comment by hisgirlfriday Friday, May 1, 20 @ 4:05 pm

  49. ==I have a feeling the protests are only going to get more unhinged as the temp heats up.==

So do I, but there’s a bit more to the cancellations. The 4th Celebrations in Peoria made that cut. Yes, we have two, but one’s on the 3rd, held by our Park District.
The other is run by Midwest 360.
