I did a quick TV interview last night and while I was preparing I decided that I had to wear a hat. My hair is just… outta control.

* The Question: How are you and yours holding up?

  2. I keep a hat next to my laptop, for cases of unexpected video chats.

Saving a lot of money on razors. Might keep the beard.

  3. The drop off between the hair on the side of my head and whats left on top is very clear at this point.

  4. We’re good.

As to the hair thing. Started balding in my early thirties, now at 50 I shave it to stubble.
Kind of hard to shed a tear for those who need a barber and can’t get to one.

  5. Yes for the Pritzker pony tail, for whoever likes the look of a small bird on their heads.

  6. I haven’t shaved since March 12. I’ve never grown a beard before and now I know why. It looks terrible, patchy and gray.

I might keep the mutton chops though.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Apr 23, 20 @ 10:34 am

  7. I needed a haircut 6 weeks ago. It usually takes about a month of me looking in the mirror and saying “I need a haircut” to actually go get one, and it was getting close then, and then this happened. It almost hides my ears, if it didn’t have a bit of a curl when it’s this length it might cover them by now. I don’t like buzz cuts, but I’m getting to the point where I’m considering trying to do one myself. I probably won’t, but it’s getting annoying.

  8. Good Lord, Sumo Gov.

Status of my hair? My wife asked me I could send a pic to my barber and get written estimate.

  9. Haven’t had hair this long since the early ’90s. Unfortunately, the top of my head still seems to be “challenged.”

Comment by Lt Guv Thursday, Apr 23, 20 @ 10:36 am

  10. Not due for a haircut yet (visited the barber about five weeks ago), but I really want to visit the dentist for a cleaning as soon as it is permitted. No problems, but it is time for a check up and cleaning.

    Don’t forget to floss.

Comment by Practical Politics Thursday, Apr 23, 20 @ 10:37 am

  11. In our many years of marriage, I have never seen facial hair on my husband with the exception of a few days growth while on vacation. He now has a full beard.

Luckily I can color my own hair but desperately need a haircut.

  14. Wearing my Masters golf hat a lot.

Doing as well as anyone, I suppose, better than others in ways too… keeping my mind busy not worrying about things I can’t control, staying in as much as I can tolerate, walks or sitting outside, zoom calls and reaching out to others, checking on them too, even mentally.

    My best to all.

  25. We are doing fine. I’m recovering from a perfectly timed broken ankle (Feb 6th). Now ambulating, which means knocking things over on a regular basis in the house. Working from home, as is my wife and son.

My world-traveling daughter is doing tele-collaboration in her Canadian (Toronto area) graduate program in, of all things, Game Level Design, on top of an interior design degree.

The daily worry that we have in our household is my oldest daughter, living in her own household and working in an Emergency Room of a local hospital. I contact her every day. She is young, fit, and continuing to work out, and pursue her education with minimal help from the family. Pray for her please, as we do daily.

Comment by Lt Guv Thursday, Apr 23, 20 @ 11:26 am

  39. I was able to get my hair cut a few days before the shutdown. My regular haircutter was out of town so she recommended her cousin. She did a nice job but I knew she should have cut it a little shorter. I didn’t have the heart to tell her to cut a bit more off as I figured we where in for a shutdown for a while. My wife just made a comment this morning that my hair will start waving to everyone we walk by on our daily walks in a few days. I’ve started looking at Whal clippers, just not sure I can do it and I’m afraid what my wife might do. LOL.

  42. My wavy silver hair looks great, for about the first half hour after a shower. Then, as it dries completely, it looks like my dog pulled the stuffing out of a toy and put it on top of my head.

The next time my cleaning lady visits, she will shear me like a sheep.

Comment by Langhorne Thursday, Apr 23, 20 @ 11:36 am

  43. We are holding up well. Likely better than most. Husband retired, the bulk of my work is freelance from home.

We are frugal, and have always been somewhat self sustaining (both grew up farm kids from depression era parents).

I do very much miss IDNR properties being open; hard to be an outdoor writer in these times to a degree, but given our ages and associated risks - it’s not the end of the world. I do think IDNR could be communicating to the media and also constituents in a far better fashion than they have been.

We don’t require much. I miss being able to do in person interviews, but am managing fine. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Firm believer that my personal wants and needs do not supersede the good of the whole.

I just wish that folks would stop traveling from all over creation to recreate in southern IL. Apparently hiking and outdoor time being essential means it’s also essential to travel 100, 200, 300 miles or more just to hike, fish or hunt.

Living the mantra I grew up hearing; “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.”

Thanks Rich for all your great coverage which has helped loads in keeping me informed, occasionally entertained, and emotionally on an even keel in these crazy times.

  44. I wonder if IDOC stopped their inmate barber school program. If they didn’t then the Governor might need to go for a tour of the facility soon.

Comment by Unionman Thursday, Apr 23, 20 @ 11:41 am

  45. It’s tolerable so far. I trim my beard like I did before, and I’ve been getting out my old bandanas lately and wearing them around my head Willie Nelson style. Keeps the hair up off the back of my neck.

  46. I was bald last time we had a discussion on hair. And, I’m still bald. So I’m holding up well as far as hair goes.

  47. I appreciate “Samurai Governor”. Great visual.

I’m one of the essential types, so I go in every day.

Have been wearing hats for the last 25 years which I think is a result of having worn baseball hats and hockey helmets for too long in the first 25 years of my life. I’m told I look rugged with my fedora on, and demented without it.

Comment by Proud Sucker Thursday, Apr 23, 20 @ 11:51 am

  48. No on Pritzker’s man-bun. Even hipsters who wear socks with sandals don’t look good in those ridiculous things.

My hair is getting to the right length where it will look perfect with the lime green bell bottom leisure suit I’ve got in the closet.

Comment by Streator Curmudgeon Thursday, Apr 23, 20 @ 11:51 am

  49. I received a pair of the ever-shrinking inventory of online hair clippers last week. Watched a YouTube video of how to properly cut my hair. It didn’t go as planned so I shaved it all down to several millimeters. Still better than the annoying shag.

Comment by Independent Thursday, Apr 23, 20 @ 11:54 am

  50. I shaved yesterday. I might shave again in a week or so.

  51. Apparently, I am getting a little snippy when my partner asks too many questions. He has stopped asking so many questions and answering with “yes ma’am.” I could get used to this (banned punctuation).

Comment by MakePoliticsCoolAgain Thursday, Apr 23, 20 @ 11:58 am

  52. Hair wise I’m fine. Got a haircut right before the shutdown, and I wear it really short anyway. But if we go several more months, I may be back to my long 70’s hair.

Wife got trimmed the same day and she wears hers about as short as mine, but it is starting to bug her. Don’t think I’m brave enough to try to trim it.

Healthwise, got my normal Spring cold and allergies. Not much energy due to lack of exercise, but managed to mow the lawn before the rain. Wife’s health is good, been keeping her almost completely isolated because she has more risk factors.

Family - son’s family had their really old dryer quit this morning. Called the appliance place owned by a friend of our family; they are still delivering so he’ll have a new one in a couple of days. That’s better than some friends who have had a broke fridge for over a month, can’t get it repaired under the warranty, and the big box store won’t deliver a replacement until this mess is over.

Glad to see most of us here are surviving fine.

Comment by RNUG Thursday, Apr 23, 20 @ 12:00 pm

  53. Our hair is fine (we’ve found out that we’re pretty handy with clippers and scissors. We have a much bigger problem. My wife who had heart disease had falls last night and this morning. We’re waiting on a return call from her doctor to consult on what to do. Normally, this sort of thing would mean a trip to the ER, but we have just a little, teeny, tiny bit of reluctance to do that right now. Anyway, order your clippers now before they sell out. They cost less than one good haircut.

  57. Ran into a strange flick that I enjoyed last night, with very appropriate and progressive music: Koyannisqatsi. Philip Glass was the composer. Never saw it or heard of it before. It’s the bustle of humanity sped up real fast from the camera, circa 1983, about the humans’ impact on the environment (didn’t see the beginning). I was in the state of mind to see it.

  59. Far be it from me to opine on how anyone should wear their hair.

We’re hanging in there I suppose, thanks for asking. Woke up this morning thinking we were in the midst of a deadly global pandemic with no vaccine, the states were largely left to sort things out themselves, healthcare workers didn’t have enough of something called PPE they needed to be safe at work, tens of thousands of real people were dying, many businesses were closed, folks were willingly staying home and making masks out of whatever rags they had around to contain the virus because those were the best solutions so far. Economies were tanking globally, armed protesters in Illinois and other states were open-carrying AR-15’s. Our President, who frequently displayed a discouraging personal vendetta against Illinois and certain other states, had co-opted TV broadcasting for hours each day. Unemployment was rampant, oil was worth less than nothing but turns out that was a bad thing. People seemed to care more about each other, makeshift television became more enjoyable than its over-produced predecessor, cannabis had morphed from being illegal to essential, and I had taken up bread making. …still processing.

Sketchy internet is wearing on me today. It’s not one of my better days, but it’ll be okay. I got out for a short walk at lunch time.

  68. I think this might be a great time for professional hairdressers to ask customers to send them a photo, with the understanding that said photos could become part of an in-salon album to help encourage clients to let the professionals do the job. I have some images from the past I could contribute, but so far haven’t reached the point of something photo-worthy for this crisis….though I think that image of the Governor would qualify.

  69. South burb of Chicago; like a 2 minute drive. News item: “Man’s hair rioting through neighborhood”. My stylist is awaiting to reopen; I’ll be tipping her well after a 4-month break. Flying solo at home; limiting news intake; ran errands two days in a row–the world is still out there. Willing to build face shields, other essential parts at home if I can find a place that needs me. Shop towel facemask much better than nothing according to one university lab test. Be safe, stay sane, keep things moving in life as you can.
